Does wearing designer clothes make a difference?

I know a friend of mine who is raking in big money and living rent free but buys complete ****e imo. He gets designer shoes, track suits, jackets etc... for around €300,€400. My question is, why?

He has the right to spend the money but it's not like they're waterproof or anything.

I'm not socially fluent so maybe I'm wrong and people would notice how expensive those were? Would boardsies know that someone was wearing those designer trackkies?

How you dress is definitely important but I'm not sure that spending that much on fashion makes a difference.

Make a difference to what? To how people treat you? To how you feel wearing them? To the environment? To how well a cake will rise in your oven?

Some people buy them as a status symbol, they want others to know how much they spend on clothes.

I'm all for quality over quantity, and expect clothes to last. So called designer wear can be hit or miss quality wise, and I absolutely despise ostentatious labels or branding. Cheap and tacky for a premium price.

I think if you have to ask it means you can't afford them.

To some people it makes no difference because they don't have to worry about the money. Its not going to affect their pocket if they do or don't buy them.

If you are asking if the products are always worth the money that is arbitrary. They are not always designed to last as some people think.

Louboutin heels have a red sole that is designed to wear away quickly ...so people can see if they are old or new.

Its not just about having the shoes its about showing you can buy them regularly and replace them without having to think about it.

They are not meant to be worth it. But they are meant to show ...you don't care. You don't worry about value because you have too much money and you need to give it away.

Does it make a difference to how people see you. Yeah probably.

Although some people can make something look expensive. They have the knack.

Do these things appreciate in value etc? Some bags do. But if you are the target market ...you don't worry about that.

To some people they make all the difference ..they love the brand ...they have always had the money ...they will do anything to get a certain item.

So...i guess it does make a diff.

I mean think about it. IF IT DIDNT MAKE A DIFFERENCE ....there would be no designer clothes...they would be out of business.

So it must make a social difference to some people.

    Absolutely.

I wouldn't be caught dead in anything that wasn't Wrangler, or Lee Cooper at least.

What are you going to do with yourself when the Internet is full, OP?

    Sigh.

Well Feg, it's like this. You really don't need to spend huge amounts of money on 'designer' clothes. As long as it looks good and you are well put together and the clothing is of decent quality and fit, the price tag is rather irrelevant.

There is a case to be made for quality over quantity, which is to say, if you have just a few garments but they are of superior quality they will, ultimately, last you a lot longer. But there are plenty of mid range options out there that are good value for money.

Also, shop online and look for sales online.

That goes for any particular style that one may have, however, I find 'designer' labels prominent on clothing to be pretty gaudy IMO.

    I tell you what though.

I would never wear worn designer clothes. Or like just one designer thing....

Better to kind of make something look amazing that you just like.

I wish i had the knack for that more ....i wonder if there is a course you can take.

He’s probably one paycheque away from fcuk all like the rest of us but if they want to be buying overpriced sh1te then that’s their own business.
Me personally I’d have good clothes for good stuff and of a Sunday and cheap clothes for boll1xin around in.
90% of the time I’m tattering around in my cheap clothes and happy doing it.

It is ostentatious to wear such clothes. I personally wear beige communist-style overalls so as to display my camaraderie with the common rabble.

You are right, weak minded, shallow arseholes influenced by marketing buy all that "designer" crap.

Well yes but most people here don't have much money.

Even if they had it, they wouldn't wear it. And maybe that's a good thing. But I reckon we could do with losing a bit of the sheep mentality. I saw a cracking looking woman the other day and she had pink hair and a black dress. She had tattoos and all. Surely her gear wasn't expensive, but she looked great.

I go out of my way to buy clothes that don't have labels or obvious branding on the outside, I'm not paying for something and then doing their advertising for them.

A guy I go to college with told me today the skanky looking jacket he's been wearing all winter is Canada Goose and cost 400 quid. Honestly it looks like something he made from an old duvet and a bin bag.

Something about designer just makes you feel great.
Even if its underwear that no-one else can see, I think it makes you ooze confidence.

I was wearing a t-shirt a few years ago when this teenager sitting on a bench in the shopping centre with his friends went into a fit of laughter reading it. My t-shirt read "Jack & Jones". To this day I still haven't worked out what was so hilarious about this. Was I too old for it? Was it not in style? All I know is I bought it because I liked the colour, not to impress anyone.

Paying big money to be a walking advert for someone else's brand must be one of the biggest con-jobs ever.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,786 ✭✭✭wakka12

    Difference to what?
Personally I think excessive branding either just makes somebody look pretentious, like a try hard or else self conscious. You can dress beautifully in clothes of modest expense.

Brands are for losers, I just leave the price tags on, they know I mean business then.

I wore the box for me tele recently, 800 euro it cost,.
