Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Was reading another thread and it got me thinking. What is the best city / location in a video game?

    Some say Skyrim was amazing:

Others say City 17 from Half Life 2:

Both fine choices. What would be yours?

    Great question!

Solar System of Outer Wilds is first that comes to mind but need more time to thing about older games.

At the time I loved Los Angeles in the Blade Runner game from the mid 90s.

The unnamed cityscapes in Naissance - has this empty, overwhelming dystopian feel, feeling like it stretches out to infinity

    gDTIqle.jpg

The island in the Witness - every shadow, every reflection, every pillar placed on purpose, in a game full of visual delights and secrets.

    WoSYG2y.jpg

Inaba in Persona 4 - really it's just a street, a shopping centre and a few other buildings, but the place feels lived in and genuine: somewhat out of kilter in the modern world but all the more convincing for it. Persona 5's Tokyo had nothing on it.

Grizzly Hills WoW. I started WoW just as Lich King released and just the general ambience of Northrend was amazing but Grizzly Hills and that haunting violin tune will probably stay with me for life. I just put the track on youtube and man I still feel as strongly about it today as I did then.

It's a wonderful track, alright. Apparently, it's not a violin its a Nyckelharpa

All these games are just 3D garbage.

The fact is none of them look any where near as good as late Neo Geo games.

    Columbia in Bioshock Infinite.

It's one of those environments where, if you stripped away the combat from the game and opened it up, I'd happily explore for hours on foot, or rail as the case may be.

You could nearly say any of the AC games really, Rome, Cyprus, Spain, Istanbul, London, the Caribbean, etc, but it has to be said that they done an amazing job with Odyssey, and the draw distance alone (on console) is something spectacular imo. I think it's more the variety and scope that lets Odyssey stand out. A lot of Skyrim felt copy/paste, but I didn't get that with Odyssey at all.

How do I embed from my phone?

If you're uploading it to Boards, you need to direct link and put it between the [ img ] and [ /img ] brackets (no spaces). IIRC you can only do this once you've posted as only then can you get the direct link for the upload.

Edit: I'd love to throw up pics of Nosgoth from the Legacy of Kain series. The place awed me when I played them, but as it's so old it looks pants in comparison to the above. Amazing setting, and I really hope there's a reboot, would love to see Nosgoth in 4K!

Irithyll of the Boreal Valley in Dark Souls 3 has got to get a mention here. Possibly the most breathtaking views and vistas of any game location I've ever encountered.

It's probably my favourite location in the series, and possibly the reason Dark Souls 3 is my favourite entry.
