Is socializing largely a waste of time?

Before you kill me with comments, I'm talking about socializing when it comes to nights out, football, etc..

I remember back in 3rd year in 2013, there was this kid who sat next to me that I pitied. He looked weird, wasn't awkward but quiet and worked hard. Never went to any nights out in TY or drank much alcohol. When he socialized, he talked with the smart Chinese students. I pitied him for not taking a break.

Fast forward to 2020 and this guy who graduated the same year as me has nearly €10k in his bank account, did a computer science internship in UCD that got him to Silicone Valley and is thinking of working for a year in America.

Better than most lads in my school who graduated and especially me.

Now people will be screaming that "socialization is important for getting jobs" but I'm not talking about that kind of socialization. I mean "nonsense socialization" where you go out to the pub/nightclub and talk rubbish or gossip about people.

There's a good quote by Eleanor Roosevelt, "Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people." I thank that guy perfectly illustrates that.

He's just got his sh!t together. Personally, I hate having to interact people who seem thick. It's tedious and they constantly ask me to do things for them that they're not able to do. I hate that.

    Good for that guy.

Going to the pub and having a tray of pints should never be considered a waste of time. It’s one of the great pleasures in life.

Bonus points if you chat up a woman and get the ride afterwards.

Employers love soft skills these days so not a waste of time from purely a financial point of view. A few megacorps will take on the stereotypical nerdy fella and leave them code away in a corner for a decent wage but there's a fairly limited supply of those jobs

Some jobs allow you to make a career out of talking ****e and drinking your head off. In the right toxic organisation sniping and bitching about colleagues to the right people (superiors you are aligned with) could get you a promotion. Don’t rule it out!

Honestly lad, depending on your other social outlets it can be a big part of your mental health it's only at the age of 30 I'm realising it.

Its all about moderation isnt it.its good to be able to unwind with a few pints or watch the premier league but its all about balancing it with career progression.if just end up with a load of drinking pals you'll get sick of it

How do you know he just didn’t like you all and had a very active social life away from school?

He was always reading a book during lunch and rarely spoke.

How you know what's in his bank account?

He told me. Now he seems quite narcissistic and flaunts his wealth along with his girlfriend.

Again, good for him. You're having a hard time dealing with his good fortune.

    Here's the envy again.

He got the balance right. He obviously did/does socialise if he has a girlfriend. He just didn't act the waster while in secondary school. He clearly got his priorities right.

Sounds like he is doing well for himself all right. Maybe he can give you some tips that you should heed.

Probably couldn’t deal with your inane topics of conversation.

I think so. But then again I can't stand people. I mean it's all personal opinion.

Not at all. It's important to have leisure time, doing whatever makes you most happy and there's nothing quite as rewarding as spending it with the right people.

Time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time :)

True but let's not lose sight of the socialising the OP had in mind - the boys in TY going for a few jars and disapproving of a student who was actually studying.

Is living a waste of time? Probably, so just enjoy it/ Do whatever you want to do always and await your punishment.
