Bord na Mona have a huge rail network for bringing turf to power plants and briquette plants and also peat moss extraction. It's likely part of that.

There was an old branch line that ran to Loughrea from just off the main Galway line beyond Athlone. Was it this area?

The new road (from the motorway) follows the alignment to the round-about. You can still see where the old line heads off to the north east (heading out from Loughrea). It was a narrow gauge, but it wasn't part of the BNM network, I think it was mostly for cattle and stuff. There is a station on the north of the motorway (across the road from Pat McDonaghs plaza), and I think the owners of it have an old carriage and possibly an engine they are working on (I don't think you can see them from the motorway anymore, since the trees have matured)

It wasn't narrow gauge, was a standard-gauge CIE branch line that was operating as late as the 70s:

what the OP is asking about sounds like BnM tracks.

http://overpass-turbo.eu/s/PLo If nothing shows, click 'Run'. Map is movable and zoomable. May not work with certain devices. Click on the objects and you should get some information.

I think it is partially lifted, not sure where it starts/ends or where it goes to/from.

Thanks, always assumed it was narrow. Also that station half way between Attymon and Lougrea was a very unusual location.
