I think the joke is meant to be on us, the viewer - so to speak, as it's clearly Elton John, not John Lennon!!! "Think it's John Lennon', ha 'Think it's John Lennon', haha - it's definitely a good one, but they didn't fool me!!

EDIT, all the people thanking that post do realise that Brookside aired the patio story a year after the West case broke I take it? The case where young women and children were buried not just under the house in the basement but also under the patio.

It wasn't based on the West case at all. The victim (Bob from Fair City) was a paedophile and a wife-beater, killed and buried by his wife Mandy and his lesbian daughter, Beth the lesbian, who was a lesbian.
