Looking to buy an 11-14 Ford focus and import from the UK. Been looking at flippingcars.co.uk the past while and a lot of the cars have good mechanical reports from the bca. Prices on the site seem to have increased by about 20-30% in the past month. Is there any other sites like this (not ukcarimports) that offer a similar or better service or even a crowd in Ireland that will import for you cheaply?

    Hi guys,
Seeing as buying a diesel from those years is out of the question, is importing a petrol much cheaper? I wanted a diesel but buying from Ireland could cost 7.5k for decent mileage for a 2012/13.

You could pick up a sub 80K mileage 2012 1.6 vvti for £3.7-4.5k, about €4.5-5.3k. Vrt and nox (41) about €840 and €205, so you might come in under €6000 with ferry etc. Irish prices for 2012 sub 80k miles are €7-8k, so there's saving all right. Heres a typical example of vrt. Stat code 46785722, focus 1.6 edge with 80k miles, may 2012 reg. VRT €840

Lads, I'm trying to tax my car but when I put in the new reg and last 7 digits of the VIN( as advised by VRT guy), it says "The combination of registration number and PIN entered was not valid. Please check you have entered the correct vehicle registration number and current PIN"
    What now??

You won't be able to tax it until tomorrow, its the next working day you can tax it.

It says it at the bottom of your registration receipt.

I'm looking at bringing in a car asap (once I find one). If I've nothing found in the next 20 days Is there any info yet on VRT if buying a car after January 31st/Brexit, would VRT stay in place until the EU and UK agree tariffs or is it instant extra taxes?

...I am talking to a UK Mercedes Benz main dealer about purchasing an E class. The rub is that they need a UK address to pay the car tax and more importantly to post the V5C form to. They will not let me leave the garage with the full V5C. They said I can use a friend's address and that other buyers from the Republic have done this previously. Does anybody here have experience with this? How long could I expect the form to be sent out?

Paying my VRT late isn't too bad - costs an extra €126 if I am 30 days or less late registering the car in Ireland, ie 60 days or less from when the car enters the country.

Are there any other red flags here. I'd be keen to purchase from a main dealer as the 1 year warranty they offer applies to Ireland also.

Barrac, my reply may be a bit late, but I have done this with a dealer - you will most likely be issued a new V5C with updated keeper details direct from DVLA rather than the dealer posting it to you. I gave an address in NI.

My experience was I received the new V5C around 4 weeks. As others have said regarding warranty, I would be cautious about how purposeful it would be - Id seek to get a discount as others have suggested.

Anyone using Transferwise for payments, you can now set up Direct Debits in UK to pay for UK Motor Tax (if so inclined) on purchases rather than pay for 6 months in advance and claim back 5 after import.

What's the story with NCT after paying VRT? Nobody in the VRT office said anything to me about booking it when paying VRT, and I read something about the possibility of using the MOT to gain an NCT cert for the remaining time on the MOT?

    Hi folks,

I posted earlier in the thread. Bought the car last week in the north and have the VRT booking tomorrow in a NCT centre. I'm bringing:

V5C form (includes CO & NOX emissions)
    VRTVPD2 form
Utility bill dated within last two months (printout as paperless)
    PPS Card
    Dated Invoice of purchase
    Passport
    MOT certificate

    Does that all seem ok?

Once it has all been imported and paid up, do they stick the plates on for ye? Do you just organise Insurance before you drive out of the NCT centre?

Probably a repetitive question of mine from last week but want to make sure it all goes through ok.

    Cheers

    Fitz

I have it insured for a week under a UK insurer. Will just switch to the new insurance onsite. Cheers

Another stupid question. I guess the insurance websites wont be updated automatically with the new registration number. Will this be an issue?

    A UK insurer?

I just used my rep of ireland insurer to bring the car down and drive around for the month why you pick a UK insurer?

My local nct centre does them so I’d say a few others do think they were €25

Its up to you to advise them of change of reg from UK to ROI. Wait a few days so they can find the new irish reg on the dept of transport system.
Btw, nct centres were selling no. plates, but often too busy to do them.

I had insurance on the car I owned in the north (it stayed up there at my parents). I just changed it to this one.

I thought you couldn't insure without a southern reg?

Nope, they'll all cover UK reg, 4+ weeks depending on insurer

my guess would be, when push came to shove, they'd say you weren't insured once you'd exported it or re-registered it. Otherwise we'd all be using UK insurers!
