I get what the op is saying, its not just people who've been abroad though. I've noticed with some people, the more they progress in their given profession the more detached they become from regular joe soaps. Bad and rude attitudes to waiting, bar or shop staff because they perceive themselves to be better and more successful than them even though they would have done similar jobs when they were younger while at college.
Turns out they're just not very nice people and you're better off without them in your life.
I think they are just stressed.

Nationalism is so pathetically insecure in this country.

No it’s not. It recognizes the insidious and ongoing threat of shoneenism, West Brits, quislings and unionists to the state won in blood and sacrifice 100 years ago. All of that promoted through BOD with his Lambeg, FG with a Minister of Justice upholding the RIC/DMP in the War of Independence and the media and politically correct revisionism of inclusion misapplied to those who oppressed ordinary Irish people. Nationalism is under attack from many sides and some of the posters here are part of it. And we know it.

Met a fella home from New Zealand last night, humble bragging about how much he is earning, what a great job he has, how well he is doing.

It comes across as insecure rather than impressive.
I knew of an Irish man who left the country when he was a teenage drop out. He'd made a fortune in America and would come back to Ireland for a month or so every Summer. You'd never guess that he was a multimillionaire because he wasn't a flashy dresser and he didn't talk about his money. I knew the family and that was how I knew. He was successful and didn't feel the need to brag about it. He had a comfortable life and could go and do whatever he liked but apart from the time he'd come back to Ireland each year he worked his ass off 7 days a week.

All true. And the new breed of Irish people seem to be as anti Irish as most. Just read these forums - full of self loathing.

Oh dear, that’s what you meant. You’re probably beyond embarrassment so I’ll leave you to your squalid little life.

And you are obviously beyond shame or pride. How typical to resort to the condescension beloved of the wannabe west Brit. I’ll add you to ignore. You have nothing of value to contribute.

You make condescension ever so easy.

Easy access to credit and cocaine. I'm saving like mad for the next crash so I can buy their houses for cents on the euro.

That postcard was taken in a bog in the Letterfrack area of Co. Galway. A passing American tourist offered the children a small amount of money to go home, put on their best clothes and pose for a picture. Little did they know they would become one of the most ubiquitous irish postcards ever!

Thats why I don't bother meeting up with my old college friends anymore.

bunch of tossers driving around in 201 Mercedes SUVs.
one lad had to ask all his mates did they approve of his girlfriend before marrying her - lioke is she good enough lookin lads ? roish ??

last I heard they were divorced.
But it's all they can talk about, money and possessions .... yawn...

How do they have a 201 already ??

I think what we have seen on this thread is the ability of Irish people to begrudge anyone seen as doing better to them

Any person that manages to drag themselves up to have a little bit of a better life is pretentious or whatever word the person can come up with.....

People change, people move on, some for better, some for worse!!! Just look after your own sh*t and let them worry about theirs

We need some sort of a one because nobody can buy a house at the moment still because of all the tiger credit pricks.

Plenty of houses available, Just everyone wants a house 2 mins walk from Dublin City centre but at the price of a house in the outskirts of Donegal town

You had a posts on boards yesterday about someone on 44k a year, first job and just started, wants the government to buy them a house because they don’t want to live in a shared house for a few months while saving.....that’s the Irish buyer of today

Irish people were sounder and happier in the past. Its become an individualistic pressure cooker of a society where personal achievement takes priority over all else and where homelessness is tolerated and people don't care about their neighbours or take their head out of their phones on public transport, yet they pat themselves on the back for how liberal and progressive and therefore nice people they are.
