So that's why the Airport is so empty this morning, it's a ghost town here...

Jeez, quite a sad statement for society that the likes of Aldi and Lidl are setting a reasonable standard for workers' rights. I'd wonder if it's because they are German owned, Germany is not quite as consumerist as Anglo countries like the US, UK, Ireland.
I thought Lidl and Aldi were supposed to be decent to work for as long as you are quick on the till? Better pay than Dunnes and the staff don't seem to be treated as badly.

I has heading to lunch at a friend's last St. Stephen's Day and saw several young's ones at bus stops, probably heading home at that stage, laden down with Penny's bags. Would you be bothered?

No public transport running? It would be an ideal day to feck off for the sun only for that.

Didnt mind working Stephens day myself when I did, time and half to compensate it and an excuse to get out of the mad house for a few hours.

Time and a half? My crappy call centre job paid double time plus time in lieu for public holidays.

People literally running into the store. Exact copy/paste of Black Friday

Good to see that the crowds were small this year. Hopefully common sense will start to prevail.

Was just down in Powercity Fonthill. Pretty empty down there.

It’s gone completely mad in this country. On 23rd Dec, I had to bring my father in law down to the butchers to collect his meat. Dunnes was advertised as been open until 2am! For what reason... I have no idea. People were coming out of Dunnes with trolleys so full you’d swear the apocalypse was coming.

Then people no doubt queuing this morning from 4am for sales!

Ridiculous carry on. Your behavior is forcing other people to work. Just lay off until 27th like.

100%. Shops close for 1 day, but you swear it closed for a month.

People thinking they are saving 500 quid on a tv when in real world they save about 20 bucks.

    EVENFLOW

I don't understand why it should be different to your normal weekly shop with an added turkey and ham to be honest. You'll see 2-3x as many people in your local Tesco, Dunnes etc as if it's the end of the world. Chances are they've picked up sweets, biscuits etc in the weeks leading up and just need the turkey and ham and whatever sides for that week. Don't understand getting trolleys full for a few days.

I'd say a large part of it is people running out multiple times to get a few bits they forgot or could even do without.

I'm willing to bet half the people going for the sales are buying ****e they don't need just because it's marked down. I just buy online whenever I need something, plenty of places to free returns if something doesn't fit. Majority of my purchases this year have been discounted or on sale.

I can’t understand the anger over people buying whatever they bloody want themselves for Christmas.

People piss and moan about this every year. Who cares? If you’re not into it then you don’t have to participate.

Not everyone wants to live life exactly as you see it particularly in a modern multicultural world.

I can’t understand the anger over people buying whatever they bloody want themselves for Christmas.

    Because

    1) you’re forcing people to work. I’m sure the vast majority would rather be home with their families. It’s impacts people’s Christmas Day as they’re up at stupid o clock next day

    2) it’s going to become the societal norm that Christmas is a single day on 25th then back to normal on 26th

    3) this is even more ironic given that shops shove the “festive season” down our throats. They have shops full to the brim of Christmas stuff long before Halloween, yet when it comes down to it, it’s treated like a single day

    4) Senior management and the likes are guaranteed not to be there working the frontline on 26th

    5) With all the phones/tablets as presents over Christmas people can shop online to their hearts content.

It’s literally the consumerist ruination of Christmas. Is it really too much to ask for 2 days off at the end of a year, so we can recharge and reconnect?

It angers me because I’ll be telling my kids how January sales used to be in January and how we actually took time off over Christmas and enjoyed being with family/friends. Tradition is literally being killed off here for €€€

Doesn't bother me that much, let people do as they want, but wee Greta wouldn't be pleased and goes to show that trying to stop people buying mass produced stuff they don't need is an impossible task.

Do people go to work in shops like next, unaware of their peak sales periods and the hours required to support it?

It’s not really a sale tho . You would save money by just not spending at all

That not being pleased would almost drive me out to the shops.

You’re not forcing anyone to do anything. Everyone knows opening hours when taking jobs.

It’s two days for anyone else that wants it to be and doesn’t want to shop. Some people want to shop so let them do what they enjoy.

That’s business. Again, nobody forced you to buy anything before you wanted to.

That’s a perk of working towards senior management. If there’s no perks then there’s no point in people working towards anything and standards in all areas end up on the floor.

Nobody is delivering online shopping the same day, any day of the year.

It would be great to see a gender split of the shoppers.

    I'd wager 80%-90% female.

    Clothes shops 90% female.
    Electrical shops 90% male.

Well, I'm sitting at home and have absolutely no intention to go near any shops at all today, the missus overbought as usual and we'll be having xmas(ish) dinners for days.
Plus there's still plenty of beer left! :D

The restaurant levels in shopping malls:

    50:50 mf mum's dad's.

The conversation controlled by outspoken vociferous cranky toddlers.
