What a legend, of course nowadays such competitions are probably illegal due to "safety concerns" ... what tosh!

Any good stories of massive sessions ?

I unfortunately am a lightweight and think the most I've ever drunk is 10 pints over the course of a day and was absolutely wrecked after it...

Posted this over on the Christmas thread - hi to all the good folks over there! But it covers the issue

    12 pubs of Christmas

Had 2 bad experiences with it over the last few years.

One myself and one the other half

I more or less poisoned myself doing it with work in 2015. Drank unknown quantities of spirits and shots like a fool. Singing Sinatra til stupid o clock in the morning.

The following day we had a packed schedule including attending a school concert and dinner for the in laws.

    Never again.

It’s so not worth it especially if you have little elves to mind the following day.

I’ll never forget the fear seeing my better half arrive home in a taxi sobbing, semi conscious and incoherent after her work Christmas party.

I’m still very angry that her employer subjected her to that. (A well known bank institution). She has no memory whatsoever of huge parts of the night (blackouts) and had to rely on a teetotaler friend to “fill in the blanks” but apparently there was a lot of pressure on to drink drink drink.

To add to it there was a marquee set up pre the 12 pubs which was held in a stupid location beside the river liffey with no guard rails etc. absolutely fuming still thinking of it.

No clear pathways through the field to the marquee and Very little lighting around the area which would be most unfamiliar to the attendees.

The organizers obviously had no regard for Health and safety.

And as for me ferrying the other half so she could be traipsing around the packed pubs trying to find her jacket, handbag, phone, the following day was such great fun.....NOT

    Horrendous.

So, you and your partner both had a bad experience drinking too much and it's everyone else's fault?

As for complaining about the poorly lit outdoors, get a grip. Sometimes it's night time. Do you think mankind needed guard rails over the millenia when they were chasing mammoths for food or fighting the viking hordes? Yet precious folk today can't handle a tipple and a walk down a semi lit path to a marquee?

Did everyone end up like your OH? If not, why not?
Nobody HAS to drink to excess. We’ve all done it as we get caught up in the moment / night. I blame me, and me only. Not my boss, not the birthday boy / girl. Me and me only. Thankfully I have sense now and if there’s a bit free beer night I’ll often have a 7up every 2 or 3 drinks.
    Nobody is forced into drinking.
I was at a wedding where drink was free all day and night til 2.30am. I went to town on it but certainly didn’t blame my peers or the wedding couple

Sounds like you both should stay away from the booze until you’re a bit more mature.

I would usually ageee with you but on that occasion there was a sense of management expecting if not quite forcing ppl to drink.

I wasn’t there but from piecing together info from her friend who was sober throughout Apparently her direct manager and even higher management were pressuring ppl to drink drink drink and yes others ended up in a bad way after the 12 pubs that night.

Lots of hangovers and One other person collapsed the following day

    Something, something personal responsibility?

If they told her to jump in a lake would she do that too? Come on ye are grown adults.

She is ultra healthy otherwise. This was a one off which is why it was so out of character and I would say dangerous

Like, don't do it then. Don't get into rounds, skip a round, make an excuse and go home or better still ghost out. Fcuk em. Leave them at it.
It all sounds a bit juvenile.

In fairness a party hard culture exists in some workplaces and can be oppressively enforced. Nobody should feel that they have to drink to be accepted at work.

A friend went to work in the City out of college and the culture of excessive booze and coke was horrendous. He looked on course to be one of the many casualties for a few years but now he's gone up a level or two and calmed down a lot.

    +1

"Ah lads, but I was stuck in the rounds system". Simply avoid altogether. "Free will" as our resident psychologist Mr_Fegelien would say. If one feels under pressure or ostracised by the employer, move on to a better work environment. Life is too short for such theatrical nonsense.

Nightmare stories of over indulging at work doos are the reason i avoid them at all costs. Just not worth the aggro and emotional fear they bring on afterwards. In my early 20''s i was a divil for going to them an drinking to excess and making a **** of myself. We live and learn.

I fully believe that employers should stop arranging christmas parties themselves. The world has changed a lot and what was acceptable even 10 years ago wouldnt fly now.

I've gone over 30 cans a few times, usually along with some other drinks and some smoking. I wonder what I could manage now, it's been a while.

How come her mate was able to lay off the drink?

Over what time frame? I can do probably 15 cans over 10 hours myself. 30 is some amount of diesel though.

Probably the one who goes to these things, sits in the corner keeping an eye on everyone and then gossips about the goings on at the tea station on Monday. And has a camera of course. Nobody likes that person.

I'd question 30 over any 24 hour period. I did 18 last year from mid day onwards with a mixture of baileys, vodka, gin & captain morgan. Mouth was as dry as an arabs sandal on stevo's day.

Marched on to Leopardstown all the same for another skinful.

    Can't beat a xmas session

Back in my peak while visiting pals in Canada, over an August bank holiday weekend, they expect you to drink a 24 case of bottles 340ml 12oz 5.5% per day. Camping starts friday till the monday, mananged it the Friday, managed about 16 day two
was done by sunday. Big drinkers them canucks

To be fair OP heaving drinking tends to be encouraged at Christmas parties but as has been already stated, nobody forced your girlfriend to partake so heavily. No doubt she got carried away but losing her bag, her phone and blacking out is entirely her own fault. It actually comes across as really ungrateful that you're still 'fuming' over the lack of lighting. I would imagine they tried their best to give the staff a great night out and I would also imagine it cost them a lot of money.

I was at a free bar recently with work and I love a tipple or two but I managed to keep it together because it was a work event. Granted the minute the boss left I was all over it like a john on a two bit hooker but the next day I blamed nobody but myself for my sore head.

I'm with you. They fcuking kill me. I suffer terribly. That's why i drink for a constant 4 days from 24th, suffer from 28th to 30th, go on it for another couple of days and then dry till Paddy's day.

Been my routine for years :D

Would that be classed as binge drinking :)

Maybe it's just the stage in life that I'm currently at, maybe the world is getting healthier with less time for pubs or maybe a lot of other factors but one thing is for sure, these days I'm such a lightweight I'd be pished on a barman's fart.

Ahhhh the memories of the all day/weekend session

    Absofcukinlutely

I'm not a big drinker at any other time of the year but at xmas the rules get fcuked out the window.

The mrs even goes mad and will have a couple of glasses of wine with her xmas dinner
