Mad thread. You'd swear OP was a doctor where shlt actually mattered.

Take the time off. A crappy part-time job you've only had for three months is quite literally meaningless compared to your likely last few years of this type of tradition with your friends. I have fond memories of that type of thing around Christmas and I'm glad I didn't miss any of it for some boss who does not give one iota of a fuk about me.

And to the rest of ye "adults" who in your wisdom work yourselves into the ground, learn to take some personal time off if you need it, and tell them that. You don't need to be physically sick to take what's in your contract.

You’ve fond memories of what? Someone else who wasn’t rostered having to unexpectedly pick up the pieces and do your shift? Aren't you just a complete prince.

Fond memories with my friends. You know, stuff I actually care about.

Continue to tell the OP to be like a ‘hilarious’ after hours dick then. This is PI. I know I’ll get infracted, but the pair of ye are behaving like utter selfish arseholes.

If you’re so obsessed with getting wankered drunk and trying to scam your job, why not just resign.

I'm speaking purely in the context of a part-time job when young. I'm in a country that doesn't celebrate Christmas so I only get the 25th off. I won't be calling in sick either side of it because it's a job that actually matters.

I really couldn't give a toss about some other 19-year-old doing a harder shift if I were OP's age. It is absurd to me that ye cannot remember what it's like to be young and still have all your friends around for meet ups, and the importance of those memories compared to pulling a sickie.

Its pretty sad that you think work means everything. Someone calling in sick isn't a big deal. Your there because your employer is profiting off you.

A lot of people's lives are so sad and boring that work means everything to them.

I posted to ask for advice on how to go about it.

And you're getting advice. Don't get crabby just because it's not the advice you wanted.

Put on your big boy pants, go out and see your friends, act responsibly, and go to work the next day.

Oh grow up. I hardly think work means ‘everything’. I just think the OP is looking for an excuse to behave like a selfish dick, for which his coworkers will have to pick up the pieces and cover him.

Yeah but you’re right, being ‘young’ and ‘making memories’ totally absolves him behaving like a complete self centred arse. Christ almighty.

I really hope the OP was a troll post.

Can't believe no one has advised the OP ....or reminded them that WHEN they go out they have to ensure not a single person in his/her group can tag him on social media.

I'm sure after a few pints, phones will be out... Selfies etc.... Good luck with that OP.

You have already made up your mind, so it's pointless telling you otherwise, I think you are on the precipice of a moment in your life which could define your future... Your call on your life, but remember there could be consequences if you are caught out.... Which might make it difficult to get a job in the future.

OP... Just out of interest, do you know how connected your boss is in the business world ? Do they just have one shop, a chain of shops, do they have family or friends running businesses?

Go out get drunk... But if caught... Remember almost everyone here advised against it.

No chance of your friends rearranging the night out to when you can attend is there?

If I commit to do something, like work, I do it. I don't like letting people down. Shop assistant or any other job, your absence will be felt by your coworkers.

However, it does seem completely daft that the manager doesn't allow swapped shifts. For this reason, I think they have almost forced this kind of deceit from workers. We all have lives and stuff comes up.

What is the sick policy? Is it a call or a text? Whatever it is, Follow it.

To be honest they nearly deserve a few sickies for their stupid shift swapping policy.

I don't really understand why some places (or some managers) have zero flexibility when it comes to leave. Especially when it's some non essential job. It's just causes conflict where there should be none.

Tbh honest OP you could just quit and get a new job in the new year. Sounds a woeful place to work. Very Dickensian.

That said my days off getting battered are long gone I don't get the attraction of that either. Each to their own though.

Parents will be working and it'd be suspicious getting a lift from my parents for the first time ever the time after I called in sick.

If, and it’s a big IF, they question your parents giving you a lift just say you not feeling 100% so they offered to drive you.

Pulling a sickie one day is bad enough, pulling two is taking the piss.

    Thread closed for mod review.

Update: We've reviewed the situation and decided to keep the thread locked. The standard of posting in this thread is well below what is expected in PI. Most posters are here long enough to know what is expected and are reminded to be civil to each other in this forum.

Also, please be reminded that posters come here for advice, not judgement.
