Why is Carty not in the squad?

Presumably needs to fight for his Connacht place against Fitzgerald

I suspect injuries are ruling people out. Including Cronin and Beirne.

Cronin is much closer to being fit than Ronan Kelleher who has been included.

Marmion is 27, the only scrum half in the country outside Conor Murray to have started in any big wins for Ireland and unusually got a three year contract (which presumably means IRFU expects a role for him going forward) a couple of months ago. He’s been out injured since, the other four scrum halves are going well but way premature to be writing him off.

A few international careers ended. Rob Kearney, John Ryan, Sean Cronin....Marmion possibly completely out of the reckoning?

Curious that Sexton is there and Beirne isn't. Sexton clearly has a big part to play for Farrell.

Sexton is part of the leadership group I guess. Probably (hopefully) will play a part in the 6N.

Beirne I don't think will be featuring much more this season. Can't remember the last time I saw someone huffing the green whistle gone for less than 4 months

Great to see Doris, Deegan and Connors all getting a look in. All have had performances that show they can make the step up. Will be interesting to see how they get on

If thats the basis for selection why have Gibson park and Mcgrath in the squad.

I don't think anyone is necessarily been written off at the moment. Especially the likes of Marmion. But Marmion has played very little rugby so doesn't really deserve to be in the squad over the other players

I do think it is the end of road for Cronin and R Kearney at this stage, Ireland need to look at alternatives. Big Toner back in is interesting as well. I took it after the WC we would move on

I do see a certain Dave Kearney is in the squad. Happy to see he is rewarded for his form so far this season :-)

I'd say Conners is in there to have a Leinster balance to the backrow and the fact he's a specialist 7.

Anything I've seen from him doesn't shout international standard yet.

Deegan can count himself very lucky to be ahead of Jack O'Donoghhue and Jordi Murphy.

No luke marshall. He's been flying. So far this season I would rate him just behind Ringeose.
Interesting selections, Connors and Deegan. Obviously both are talented and will have some type of future roles.

    Addison is injured as well.

Delighted for TOT - just turned 21, in a tough technical scrum position, being called up and talked with.

It's definitely not the basis for selection. I was being facetious

But has Carty done enough to warrant a place there?

    Delighted for Dave.

He was being talked up on OTB this morning as well by Alan Quinlan, where he said Stockdale could do with learning from him. Glad to see his form is getting noticed.

While it is only a glorified meeting, it is interesting to consider why the likes of Carty, Marmion, Conan, Beirne etc wouldn't be invited. injured or not?

    45 is a huge number.

Beirne's absence is definitely injury related. We'll know more later in the week but I can't see him playing for months.

Let’s hope not, but that looked potentially season ending with the amount of pain he seemed to be in.

Some interesting selections there, good to see youth getting a chance.

That’s the only way I’m looking at it, especially when Sexton and POM are there. There’s obviously expectation that both will be fine come the 6N.

That logic only holds if Fitzgerald was in the squad

Eric O'Sullivan is a bit unlucky I think.

Definitely. Especially as there is only 2 Looseheads picked.

Having said that he struggled last week quite badly. Might just need a bit more time

I'd say Rob Kearney is kicking himself that he didn't take a contract in France instead of signing a one year extension and sitting on the bench for Leinster and not making the training squads for Ireland.

Jordi Murphy is the biggest omission here IMO.

First time they've ever announced one of these I think

They’re having the first press conference with Farrell on December 23rd. Timing seems very much an effort to avoid too much scrutiny.

Will Connors there is great to see, the message firmly showing that if your playing well enough youll be picked - great incentive for players

I doubt there'll be too much scrutiny over the squad selected for a chat in Carton House.

He's previously said he'd be happy to tarnish his playing reputation, fall out of favour and be a one-club player. Not everyone actually wants to move abroad. Maybe he didn't expect to happen so rapidly post world cup.

I meant more along the lines questioning of Farrell having gotten the gig, World Cup,etc

Put it this way, if Ireland had enjoyed an excellent World Cup, I don’t think the first press conference with the incoming head coach would be on December 23rd.

I think Sexton wrote in his book that Kearney was genuinely BEWILDERED that anyone would ever leave Leinster.

I assume you’re talking about the 1/2 games he has featured in this season? Hardly enough to jump established internationals and European starters!

I think Nordi has been great! He is a great all rounder. Obviously change is needed. But I didn't think he would fall. Interesting that RB was selected. Carberry has it all to do to get into form! Just because Graham Henry says so, doesn't mean a thing.
