Got two pizzas from Burnt. Mine was lukewarm at best and the toppings were just thrown onto it. Most of the fell off when I took a slice. Definitely won't be going back.

I'm surprised. Best pizza I've had in Cork.

There's much better just across the road from it. Went once and it was just grand, nothing special.

Can you recommend somewhere around the Imperial Hotel for a tasty dinner on Sunday evening?
Preferably not Indian or Chinese or Thai

Yes, that is a different Fleming. Easy mistake to make considering they are a Courtmacsherry family (neighbor to Timoleague).

Delighted to hear he’s still above the ground - now if only he’d reopen the restaurant :D

Sunday is more limited... Jacobs on the mall, Orso, Dockland and Jacques are all good places near there that will be closed.

Open: Electric, The Oyster Tavern, Elbow Lane, Market Lane.

Strasbourg Goose is about a 5min walk away, an underrated gem

Ate in Quinlan’s last night - very tasty, lovely restaurant, very cosy with gorgeous Christmas decor and a good atmosphere. Had hake fillets with chorizo and bean stew and little cubed potatoes - very tasty. My friends had dessert too - baileys cheesecake which looked divine and a berry crumble. Very reasonable for the desserts at only 5.50 for a nice size portion. The main courses are nearly all 19.50 except for the battered fish and chips which is around 15 I think. I was impressed, would go back again :-)

Quinlans is lovely. We have a vegetarian in the family and it suits us for any family meal when we do that. Love fish anyway and even though I'm a beef farmer, Id' live on a fish diet.
No one has ever had a complaint about any dish. Very good standard.

Yeah, always find it crazy how many are closed on a Sunday, you'd think it'd be one of the busiest days of the week.Pity they don't open Sunday and take a mid-week day off instead. (I know... easy for me to say that when I don't work in catering).

Would have agreed with you but went there in June and it was quite poor, food was only okay, service was poor - lovely people but repeated mistakes.

any recommendations for family restaurants allergy friendly ( egg ) . milanos is the default option.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,132 ✭✭✭✭pwurple

How serious is the allergy level? My kids egg allergy they could tolerate it being a glaze on something (like a sausage roll), but just not anything very eggy or soft, like an omelette.

Blackrock castle and Market lane chain I have found to be good with labelling for allergy and are good with children (have activity sheets and they like the food).

Tried oyster tavern for a late lunch today. Had steak sandwich & fish and chips and found it to be spot on , nice atmosphere , food was great and staff were on the ball . Would happily go back again.

I know the owner he told me they had to close for around a day to add an additional food prep area to the kitchen. Its a bit of a joke they have to publicly
announce closure orders for small violations that require only 24 hour closures to rectify. It can do damage to your business like.

That place is always spotless, its the pride and joy of that family.

Small violation? The Echo did a little piece on it.
The Closure Order was imposed on Tony's Bistro on North Main Street on November 28 and then lifted the following day after the issues were remedied.

The report from health inspectors stated: "There was an excessive build-up of dirt and food residue on wall and floor surfaces. This was particularly evident behind and beneath cooking equipment, beneath fridges, work benches and sinks. The ceiling of the main kitchen had a yellow colour due to the build up of grease."

"Grease was running down the walls behind the cooking equipment and had built up on the floor beneath. Cooking equipment had heavy deposits of grease.

They said that equipment in the restaurant also required maintenance and that all of the nine microwave ovens had heavy deposits of food residue.

"The layout of the premises is not suitable. In particular, a washing machine and dryer is located in a room where food is prepared and directly adjacent to an ice machine," the report also states.

John O'Connor of Tony's Bistro told The Echo that they remedied all the issues raised by inspectors in the report and said they were able to reopen the following day.

"Anything that was raised we have addressed and will continue to address," he said adding that they would be increasing the frequency of the deep cleans of the restaurant that is carried out regularly by specialist contract cleaning services.

Hopefully they'll learn a lesson, I wonder how many warnings they received from the inspector before the closure order.

Severe allergy so looking for places that can accommodate, lots of places will do up a plain chicken breast with chips, or sausage and mash etc but she likes a bit more variety. might try mexican ( cafe mexana ) or indian ( Bombay palace ) over the Christmas i recall them being ok years ago

    cafe mexicana isnt great tbh

Cafe mexicana is shocking bad. I know I've mentioned this before, more than once, but its so bad it actually makes my blood boil when I walk passed and see people in there.

Everything in there, apart from the salad is straight out of a packet in the freezer, there's just no way they could accommodate special dietary requirements.

Not sure if they'd be appealing or suitable for the occasion/rest of the group but Earth cafe on the boardwalk and 14V by the train station serve completely vegan menus so they'll have plenty variety for her?

Your post actually made me remember a comment on here before, it was something along the lines of that they dont even have a full kitchen and its all microwaved.

Either way its brutal as you said.

Ah it's pure nostalgia. There's a guilty pleasure in sharing a massive plate of dynamite nachos in there over a few beers.

We all know Tex-mex is american fake food anyway, where cooking is basically opening packets. Open a bag of corn chips, a jar of salsa, jar of peppers, can of beans, grate some cheese on top. Done.

Cheap and cheerful. I like it.

Coqbull, Son of a bun or somewhere else

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,036 ✭✭✭✭the beer revolu

Was in Cafe Paradiso at the weekend.
I thought it was really, really good - couldn't fault it at all.

Not including alcohol, 2 starters, 2 mains, 2 desserts and 2 coffees came to exactly €100. Good value for the quality of food, imo.

A side might be required for those with a large appetite.

Was with the other half so we share. The Steak sandwich comes with chips so there is a good amount on the plate, would not manage 2 lunches.
