Hedge installation

    Hi.
    I'm looking to build a hedge in my front garden for privacy and noise reduction from the main road.
    Anyone have experience of any companies who specialise in this area ? And what type of hedge ?
    I've never planted anything in my life
    Thanks a mill for any tips

    Where are you? :) Hedges come in many shapes and sizes and heights. If you live in suburbia think of your neighbours with regard to light/shadow.

    OP, you can get a hedge planted but you will have to take on maintenance of it. If it is not trimmed regularly, especially in the early stages, it could grow into a thin straggly row of bushes rather than a hedge.

    As to what sort, it depends on the situation. How far from the house to the hedge? Then how much space from the hedge to the road. Is there a footpath? Is there any sort of wall there already? Are you in a very built up city environment, or suburban, or country?

    You need to find a landscaping or gardening firm with recommendations locally. There are lots of them but not all of them would have a clue about planting a hedge, they don't have to be qualified and there are a good few that I would not let loose with anything more than a lawn mower.

    I had one chancer that offered to do work for me who could not identify holly, flowering current or a cherry tree in conversation about the job. Honestly, who cannot identify holly?

    I think it's more a psychological thing. A typical hedge is only a couple of feet deep. Normal recommendation for masking road noise is 100ft or so deep. Hedges are great for wind, not so much for noise. If you're talking to someone through a hedge you don't need to raise your voice, it goes right through.

    OP, if you really want less noise I'd be inclined to put up a decently solid fence and then a hedge inside it, or even both sides if you have the space. Then when the fence rots the hedge(s) will hold it up for a few years longer, and you can slide a new noise barrier between them.
