Did you initialise the drive and check the timeshift and recording paths? I'm not in front of the box to confirm how you do this but I'll check in tomorrow

When I turned in on after putting in thr drive..A message came on screen asking do you want to initialise the drive..I pressed ok....Do I need to do more..Thanks for the reply..Actually in the first post I used the word freezing...That was the wrong way to put it..What happens when its on a channel for a while..The remote wont do anything..I cant change to another channel..use the volume etc.Sorry for putting the question wrong way

    Hi guys,
Got an Edision combo box installed earlier in the year and it's crap. Gone tits up already. Couldn't be arsed with calling the installer back. I'm just going to replace it. I'm going to get the AlphaPlus with enigma 2 from Satworld. (i'll also have a look at that thread by NewClareMan which looks great).
So I have a feed from the Satellite and the Ariel. Is it just a case of connect these to the alpha plus box and then there's some initial setup when I turn it on for the first time? Is there an internet connection required for it? If so, does it support wifi ? My router is at the other side of the house.

What do you mean its gone tits up? The Edision is a super box. Probably just needs a reflash and set up in the new. Alpha plus is an inferior box IMHO and no built in WIFI. World of sat no longer stocking them anyway.

For using the usb or hdd for recordings after you iniatilise it/them the next step is to go from ext3 to ext4 when done its ready to record as the device should be setup and mounted .

Most of the time its user error and i would be doing a reflash and setup from scratch with no settings restore.
Lan cable is always better but many use homeplugs,1 from router to 13amp socket and another at box as it uses your mains for a connection.

It records ok greasepalm...But when its on one channel for a while,if I try to change channel or turn up or down volume..It wont do anything..have to switch off and on...and it works away fine for another while

You ask a good question, ideally you should get a HDD that is suitable for pvr use and New Clareman, who has a great image in a different thread recommends this one.
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/AV-25-1TB-Internal-Hard-Drive/dp/B007PFQ23C
It costs more but it will last longer. And it will depend on how much pausing, recording, rewinding etc. I have an ssd in a solo2 and its night and day but they are expensive but getting cheaper.

the thread is the COST EFFECTIVE etc and its very very good.

I got a 120GB SSD recently from MemoryC in Kildare for about €22 delivered. For that price even if it dies after a year what the hey. 120Gb is enough for most uses unless you want to keep lots of stuff. I have a NAS for long term storage instead.

8Tb and 90% full too. Im a magpie for shows I'll probably never watch again :D

EDIT: I remember hearing a thing years ago. "You will probably never watch any show/movie you recorded more than 3 days ago, You'll just delete them". It's very true.

Is anyone using micro SD cards in a USB adapter in place of flash sticks or SSDs?

I am wondering how they perform. The newer versions appear quite fast, and reasonably priced per GB.

Any I ever tried for other uses slow down very rapidly if you try to send a large file. They can't dissipate the heat fast enough and so they throttle.

How much are you getting onto it? we dont record much so SSD might be option

I think the Sky Q box we had before maybe had 1TB but we never touched it

As a rough rule of thumb allow 4gb per hour of HD so you are looking at 30 hours of HD, ten Lords of the rings movies, etc. If you've that much backed up to watch later you'll probably never watch it all anyway.

I used, for a long time, an old Dell P4 dual core machine with TBS DVB-S/2 tuner cards running a very light Linux created especially for HTPC purposes.

This thread mentions others also doing something similar with very low end devices doing the backend
    https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=108624622

On mine I use Tvheadend and no requirement for transcoding, so no real PC power required.
It is just passing data through and essentially not doing anything to it.

I have never used Plex .... but transcoding does require a more powerful setup than what I describe.

As a noob to this field I find the high volume of jargon (acronyms) to be off-putting.

It'll come to you. I was nearly put off at the start too. Glad now I wasn't.

Like all specialised subjects, that's done to nurse our own egos into thinking we're clever. :D

If in doubt don't be afraid to ask. We were all noobs once.

    can you give some examples?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 91 ✭✭J_V_C

    Hey,
I was wondering if I could ask coupla questions.

    1. Which image should I put on my Kingston 8Gb usb? http://www.openvix.co.uk/
    2. Can I install a 60GB ssd (OCZ) in this? if so should I format it to Fat32?

    1. The latest version of openVIX specifically for the Tiviar Alpha+ from that site seems to be 53 0 11
    2. yes you could install that SSD. When you have the box up and running you can go into the settings to "initialise" the HDD. This will format it to the linux EXT3 file system. There is also an option to upgrade that to EXT4 which is a slightly more advanced version of the file system. Although most boxes can read FAT32 and NTFS USB drives the operating system prefers the native EXT4 system. However the USB used for the initial flashing should be FAT32 as this is before the operating system proper is installed.
    3. The latest openATV 6.3 for the Tiviar Alpha+ is here

N.B. Images are specific to an exact make and model of box. The two images I have linked to here are raw factory images that will need setting up once installed. There is usually a wizard to help you through this. As a beginner you might be better off using one of the pre-configured images such as the one NewClareMan has kindly supplied. Once you are familiar with it, you might want to customise it or build your own from the above raw images.
