    Ah the RTE christmas guide. It was always a christmas tradition every year growing up.
    Haven't bought it myself at christmas in a while. Might give it a go. That said never watch much traditional tv anymore. That may help with that tho ...

    I use the Christmas guide now to know what to record on the box and to do the crossword and puzzles. I find them really relaxing with Christmas music playing.

    Despite the fact I get little of real value from the RTE guide there's something nostalgic & traditional about getting the christmas edition.

    My dad used to get it, the tV times & the radio times every Christmas and it was one of my favourite things as a boy marking off all the things I wanted to watch (& rarely ever did) & i get a real blast of nostalgia every year when I flick through it & see what time Gavin & Stacey & call the midwife etc. christmas specials are on...
    I never bin them either, they get added to the christmas tree box and every year I have a quick flick through the old ones. I just cant get enough of the christmas nostalgia.

    The heyday of the Christmas RTE Guide was 1977 to 1982.

    1977 was magical because Christmas Eve fell on a Saturday which meant that two weeks of great television lasted the entire duration of Christmas, finishing on 6 January.

    1978 was nearly as good; the highlight being daily runs of Augie Doggie & Doggie Daddy during the second week.

    1980 was a leap year which meant that the Christmas TV stopped on 2 January. The Christmas night movie was The Towering Inferno; all my cousins were talking about the following day.

    By 1982, the calendar had moved against us (as far as possible - or so I believed) and the guide covered the 18 - 31 December period. Of course that meant the run up to Christmas Eve had some special programmes. And who can forget the teary film as we scoffed the Santa sweets - The Champ. In 1981, we got Gone With The Wind - immense.

    In December 1983 I fully expected a return to the glory days of 1977; however when the RTE Guide appeared in the shops a week earlier than expected, it felt like a massive kick in the stomach. 17 - 30 December? You cannot be serious. One of childhood's biggest disappointments.

    My mother always thought it was overpriced when there was a guide in the papers, but the car competition meant the Christmas one was a must buy

    The two weeks have sometimes been exceptionally badly placed by circumstance though.

    The other advantage was that we had two VCRs most of the time so one guide would be marked for one and the other for the other - and a huge effort was made to watch all the waiting tapes and maybe a new three pack added to the selection to get as much stuff - preferably no ads BBC movies - as possible

    Make the most of it. RTE are looking to sell it and I fear there may not be many buyers. Whatever happens I suspect the tone and nature of the Christmas Guide will change either under new ownership or a slashed budget.

    If someone buys it which I can’t imagine anyone will it’ll be wall to wall full of ads. On the upside the RTÉ canteen won’t be featured on the cover each year.

    I remember as a kid that we had to buy the RTE Christmas Guide for the RTE stuff, the Radio Times for the BBC stuff and the TV Times for, you guessed it, the ITV and CH4 stuff. It was expensive but great fun as I'd try to read them cover to cover. Desperate to see what goodies were on.

    Now with the internet etc I'm surprised two of them are still going to be honest.

    :edit: The TV Times is still going according to Wikipedia!!
