Good god looks like I’m in the minority.

It’s awful. Really awful. I’ve seen both episodes.

I’m just going to spoiler my whole post from here.

    Acting
The guy in the lead is dreadful. He might be a good actor elsewhere but stick a mask on him and he can’t act. Acting behind a mask is hard. But put a lead character alongside other masked characters such as V or Darth Vadar and you will see what I mean. We have zero indication of Mando’s emotion. It’s makes it impossible to form an emotional connection to him.

Now before you say anything, strip away anything you know about Star Wars and you have no idea who this character is and what the hell they are doing. This clearly shows that fandom is carrying our attachment to this character because he looks like Boba Fett.

    Plot & Narrative
The show suffers genre envy. I said that 5 minutes in to the first episode and it’s an even more apparent now. The show doesn’t know what it is. It’s as if all 4 writers were locked in separate rooms and told to collaborate on a script.

The show also suffers from its episode length. It’s trying to do everything and be cinematic in a 30 minute slot. It’s not working. The Star Wars cultural references feel forced which is preventing the show from stepping away from what it was trying to do (I.E. be completely separate from the OT and the Skywalker saga). An infinite number of planets in the universe and we are back on Tattoine. This feels like a fan film with a budget.

At times it feels like a parody of Bringing Up Baby, or 3 Men and a Little Baby, or Raising Arizona.

And as for baby Yoda. I threw my lightsaber at the screen for that reveal. Does it get better in episode 2? No. It suffers from most kids films and shows like this - suddenly baby has an adult brain and can intervene in dire situations.

    Summary
This show won’t age well and is largely unmemorable. No doubt an episode 9 reference will he show horned at some stage to make the show feel relevant to fans. But alas, a turd by any other name is still a turd.

You will still watch it though.

Just to pick up on the mando and his motivation at least. Something people seem to have missed. He’s in a clan and gives all his bounty money to the priestess / armourer for the other orphans.
I’d say he’s far more human and varied given how he reacts with the asset and the droid and the guy that helps him than say Boba Fett who who’d have been one dimensional just bad guy.

Interesting take though FP. First negative one I’ve seen of it.
Hang in there. There’s loads more characters we’ve yet to meet.

Im actually pleasantly surprised by this, the world feels lived in and characters feel real.

Also love in the first episode that the Stormtroopers are hired guns after the fall of the Empire.

Liked this two and the aging on the armor, dunno if it's canon in this but in the legends storylines. Think stormtroopers died off relatively young due to their accelerated growth.

So happy he did too. I thought something like this would happen but in ep 5 or 6.

They raised the stakes so much earlier than expected. No idea what they’re gonna do now.

This is literally now Firefly, but set in the Star Wars universe.

I could be completely wrong I just remember hearing it was inspired by han having adventures smuggling. Could be completely wrong.

    Firefly was similar.

Western in Space following a big war. Firefly team were on the losing side though.

There's probably an unending debate as to which side The Mandalorians were on but either way, their population was decimated from what I know. The honour code they follow looks like it will slow down their repopulation for ages.

I'd guess there's plenty of stuff from before both Firefly and The Mandalorian which probably influenced both. Not just the Western arena but Space Western and SciFi.

Just a dumb theory about ahsoka. No spoilers. Just tagged it cos someone got sensitive. About casting we already know. Eye roll.
There’s really no spoiler in it .

Sounds spoilery alright. Make a spoiler thread. Give people the choice.

They wont get this or care in the other thread but Favreau voiced Pre Vizla in clone wars. Now he’s acted and voiced Paz Vizla in the Mandalorian

We’re gonna get siege of mandalore in the new clone wars but this is a mad deep cut. Where they going with this? Tie in? Look like it.

    New episode is very good.

Also. The baby Yoda is KILLING me. I'd buy a toy one... Which is I'm guessing, the plan

If they make one that’s intelligent like the bb8 sphero droid where it learns the room and just wanders around it would be awesome.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

They're getting good with the emotions on his face. At the end though, it felt like they could've done better with how sad Baby Yoda was.

    Another hit of an episode.

Did you notice the cube from portal?

    And also...

    Was that Bobba Fett somehow?

    Let us all hope so.

The entire series was worth it just for the opening scene of the last episode

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 16,647 CMod ✭✭✭✭faceman

Finally watched the whole series having given up after 2 episodes. It definitely improved but story and narrative was non existent in many episodes. I didn't change my view on Pedro Pascal from what I first thought. He's a good actor but he can't act behind the mask. I had no connection to him for the whole series.

Baby Yoda is a stupid character though, everyone knows it but no one will admit it because of the cute factor.

Hrmmm... feels like a big ask to get Rosario Dawson to do a voice the likes of Ashley Ecksteins

Has the ominous feeling of asking Oscar Isaac to try and do the Apocalypse voice!

but shur.. let's see how they do

Looks to be confirmed now. Variety have it. I doubt anyone will care about the voice too much apart from the huge Ahsoka cohort but it’s not like they won’t watch it.

This is huge though. She knew yoda so I’m wondering will he hand over the child to her even to train? Also sets up massive Potential for her to be in the obi wan series.
    Delighted it happening anyways

Ah no offense meant. They’re already complaining cos it’s not the lady voices her on the show playing her live action. I’ve seen her pic. No way could she be live action Ahsoka.
    Dawson is ideal.

    It's.. eh.. complicated... but yes.

The animated shows The Clones Wars and Rebels would be good recommendations to catch up.

Seems the latest rumours are that this will be a backdoor pilot for her own series.
Or maybe that's just people theorising about comments made about possible Mandolorian spinoffs

    https://www.slashfilm.com/rosario-dawson-ahsoka-mandalorian/
last month during the Walt Disney Company’s Fiscal First Quarter 2020 Financial Results Conference Call, then-CEO Bob Iger mentioned that “The Mandalorian season 2 coming in October, and then more coming from The Mandalorian thereafter, including the possibility of – infusing it with more characters and the possibility of taking those characters in their own direction in terms of series.”

I would find that acceptable :)

    In other news..

Grace doesn't watch the Star Wars animated shows from what I know... but she definitely has contacts inside Disney/Marvel.

She also heard that Ezra will be cast.

She hasn't heard anything about Sabine but does point out that Sabine is Mandalorian. You can tell she doesn't watch the animated shows cos she didn't make a point out of what a big deal Sabine and the Dark Sabre are. Just that Sabine gave it away.

Just from where they left it off in Rebels I'd say Sabine would have been more likely than Ezra if they were to do any of that.

I can’t see Ezra fitting into the Mandalorian.
They have the Ahsoka and Sabine animated series coming this autumn so it might cross over but Ezra? His whole character is just so I dunno. Childish. And intentionally. I get that. Don’t see how that would work in this series. But who knows

** he’s also endlessly annoying but it’s a character written for kids as a vehicle or entry point into the story so let them try it

Apparently Grace Randolph was the one who made up one of the rumors about kennedy getting fired. ‘She's Fandom Menace and a fraud who knows nothing and consistently wrong about everything.’ But hey. Anything for clicks on YouTube.

She might have. Rebels leaves that unclear.

I’m expecting the flashbacks to reveal a Jedi saved the Mando from the Super Battle Droid and though it was going to be Kenobi but if they are bringing Ashoka to live action then it could be her that saves him and she might only appear in his past, not the present day.

Will we get an explanation of the tracking fobs in an upcoming episode?

They make no sense to me - if there is a gadget for tracking fugitives then bounty hunting requires no hunting or searching.

Looking forward to learning more about the Way. I don’t recall it being mentioned in TCW or Rebels and loads of Mandalorians have been shown with the helmet led off - so is a new thing to their culture, a religion that we haven’t been told about before or are these guys outcast from Mandalorian society. One of the covert is from House Vizla.

Quick word of advice for anyone who usually zooms in the picture to hide the black bars top and bottom. About 40 minutes in the aspect ratio changes from 21:9 to 16:9 for cinematic reasons.

    Oh! Was that
a clone? It looked like a clone! Had heard there was some hype before watching so I'd thought Sabine or Ahsoka might have been making some appearance. Couldn't for the life of me figure how they'd work that in. A clone makes way more sense.

It's Temuera Morrison, so he could be portraying any number of characters. Would be a fitting red herring to hint at him being Fett, but actually be Cody or another clone.

I actually hope it isn't a named clone if that's the way they decide to go. With Bo Katan, Ahsoka and the dark saber I think we've enough clone wars/rebels links

Yeah I get that but I don't think they need to shoe horn characters into the show. It's my biggest gripe with the prequel trilogy (and to some degree rebels) Everyone and everything is too connected. Honestly I'd be ok if
    fett
wasn't involved either and there was no mention of
    his armour

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,391 ✭✭✭PhiloCypher

Thought that was a great first episode, a simple story well told. No needlessly overcomplicated/nonsensical overarching plot that if you don't buy you'll get nothing from the season(hello Star Trek Discovery). Mando has to get Baby Yoda to the Jedi, on the way he'll have self contained adventures. Really hoping Favreau and Filoni have some input on the Cassian Andor spin off , Disney could do worse then putting them in charge of all their Star Wars content.

That was a decent and simple enough first episode. Some jet engine. I think you would want to be wearing good muffs sitting on the side of that do or you could end up deaf not that it sounded that loud but if it is a jet engine like that it would have to be loud.
As for the sand dragon. Just aim for the mouth. That's what I was saying as soon as I seen it.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

    Great second episode.

To think this is what Firefly could have been if people weren't so short sighted.
