Lower Shannon estuary tidal surge barrier.

    Is it time for a tidal barrier across the shannon estuary around Tarbert or Foynes?

    Limerick city, shannon, Adare, Ennis, to name a few, are toiling away with improving flood defences against the rising sea.

    Would a tidal barrier solve all?

    Is it doable from an engineering perspective?

    If is was true do we have a few trillion to build the biggest flood defence in the world? Why don't we just jack the whole island up so sheep atop mountains in Donegal don't feel left out?

    If a flood barrier of that scale and cost was needed in Ireland it would be Dublin Bay and nowhere else.

    Ennis and Adare are both over 10km from the Shannon so I’d be extremely worried if that is the source of their flooding.
    Limerick does have some issues with tidal flooding however the bigger issue is the flooding from the west towards the city. A tidal barrier would potentially make this worse.
    The Dublin Water Supply project might reduce this issue.

    It would need to be just 1kM wide, up an estuary, so well in from the sea, a lot different than going across miles of open sea in Dublin.

    Is it only a km across the mouth of the Shannon,? How deep is it..
    Well you could put in a huge tidal barrier with turbines to generate power, that would totally change the nature of the shannon estuary though...

    The high tide mark is upstream from Ennis town and in Adare its above where the N21 crosses into the village.

    Not across the mouth, but near Foynes its about 1kM.
