My mother loved Mike Murphy and my father always said, "That Bollix", every time he came on TV.

Always came across as a genuine nice enough fella. Did his TV work and that was that... never see him popping up in reality tv, in newspapers, magazines or reeling in the tears.

Reading back through the thread there - What did Nell McCafferty say?

Ryan didn't give the mic to her.

    Nuthin' of substance.

She interrupted, off mic, when Tubridy was doing a link. Hard to know exactly what she said as she was not very coherent. The jist of it was that she wasn't happy about not getting a word in. But then she requested a glass of water - which Tubridy brought to her. Quality TV.

Ranted something incoherent, wanted to get her speak in before Ryan went for another ad break. Then demanded a water and Ryan duly obliged. She did not look well.

Didn’t actually get to say anything other than signaling that she needed a glass of water, which Ryan gave her, then she began some grumble which was silenced by Ryan quickly turning to next guest. It something like that. She didn’t get a spoke in.

I felt they could've done an awful lot better with it. There was so much more to say about him and so many more interesting clips where his shows either captured the mood of a nation or changed it.

He was 85, they knew he was going to die eventually, I'm disappointed they didn't have something much better prepared. It had it's moments but it got bogged down in silly clips that were a tribute to the show rather to gay and old wafflers like Michael D. I don't think it did Gay justice.

I hope they have another more effective shot at it for New Year really.

Sounds like Ryan's worst nightmare: something real and unrehearsed that would force him to think on his feet.

I enjoyed that show It was effectively a very public wake and we sure do love a good wake. I must say with the death of Gaybo and Brendan Grace just a few months ago, I feel quite sad. A huge part of growing up in ‘80’s / ‘90’s Ireland is slipping away and we’re all just getting older. Time doesn’t wait :(

I was indeed struck by the indifference many of my younger (but not by much!) work colleagues had to this news. No clue who he was, this news hardly registers with a good proportion of people, although you’d hardly believe it if you were watching RTE news.

RIP Gaybo, a true Irish legend.

I agree with you but Then

Yesterday my three teenagers came in from school. The radio was on and one of them asked "Who's dead that they're talking about?"

WHen I said Gay Byrne, The youngest knew straight away it was the guy who started the toy show. The others Knew him from that and from reeling in the years and Gaybo Laughs Back, etc.

When I was talking to my older daughter( mid 20s) , she said, "Oh ya, **** (her partner), did sound for him on some tour he was doing.

A poor tribute to "He thought Manuel Labour was a Spanish musician."

Yeah, Nell is younger than Mike Murphy and she looked like his mother tonight.

I think everyone was concerned for her tonite.

I think someone else summed it up really well-no matter the topic with Gay Byrne, he'd never scare the sH**e out of you.
Claire Byrne talking about 'how Gaybo mentored her'... well, if he did, she wouldn't try to scare gullible idjits over basic crap like Fortnite.

On the other hand, Gay Byrne could discuss spirituality, the potential nothingness after we die, and you'd still feel like 'okay-so if there's nothing, I'm not gonna be scared of that'.

Claire Byrne can't even talk about cheese without scaring people senseless.

How long was the show? On the player, it cuts off at 1 hour 44 minutes during Brian D’arcy talking about Omagh.

I hate that clip. It’s played far far far too much

No, there is no such thing as seeing that clip too many times.

I find myself uttering that phrase for the majority of people who come on TV these days, both male and female.

Brian Keenan nails it “he wasn’t looking for stuff.”

I was surprised that Tubridy did interrupt him and say "Brian I hear that you've been unwell recently"

I honestly think Mike said fck live on air because Ryan had just made a crack about him being "the bold child". He knew full well Tubridy would panic when spontaneity was introduced into the proceedings.

Mike said shag all cos Tubbs just cut him and walked off leaving mike lookin after him like a gombeen. He cut twonk sorry I mean Twink off pretty sharp too

They will surely do a 2 hour retrospective doc which will hopefully be comprehensive

Went to bed before the end, but having looked back at a clip of the "finale", I am surely not the only one who thought the Parting Glass was a bit haphazard?

Finbarr Furey in particular was a bit incoherent, which is a surprise as usually he has a terrific voice. It is still a beautiful song, but I feel there was too many musicians involved in the performance.

Loathe for me to criticise same on social media though, in case I get lynched :D

In theory it should have been an incredible performance, in practice it didn’t do any of them justice. Andrea Corr didn’t even know some of the lyrics.

Maybe he was afraid she would repeat her performance of the LLS fiftieth anniversary show. ;)

I haven't seen the show but I can just imagine Tubridy. He can't seem to get it right when it comes to any spontaneity or natural engagement with people, which a show like that would have demanded.

Again, thinking back to the fiftieth anniversary show, he spoke to a guest in the audience, and when they mentioned something that required a response of some sort - 'I'm sorry to hear that' - he, instead of responding, bounced to the next guest, because... cue cards.
Pat Kenny picked up on what the guest had said and brought the conversation back to them, in a very natural way, which was absolutely the appropriate thing to do.

Tubs was left floundering, as usual.
