If Gaybo had some link to Tayto, part/previous owner, done promotional work for them, or it was a major sponsor of the Late Late while he was presenter, then yes, it would have been ok for Tayto to do that.
However afaik, they didn't, so all there tweet does is make it more about Tayto, not his death.

The cynical among us would suggest that it was Tayto trying to get free advertising on the back of a sad event. Some people get up in the morning just itching to be offended.

Because its a disgustingly opportunistic by a brand to capitalise off the death of a beloved figure.

I saw someone point out how they were trying to emulate the image Disney released of Mickey Mouse comforting Kermit when Jim Henson died back in 1990, that made sense, this did not.

FFS - I would hate to be around these offended people when something really bad happens.

Ah here. I thought it was a nice post. Some people really do just love getting offended.

The tayto brand try to position themselves as an icon of the country.
In fairness, they've done a bloody good job!
I can see how they couldn't resist paying respect to another 'icon'.

It probably seemed like a good idea at the time, but it's pretty cynical by a brand to do such a thing.
Would have been better if the CEO of tayto / Largo foods said it .. but then it'd look odd, and you'd question why are they doing it at all.

Mr Tayto is a psychopath. I say we castrate him and place him on the sex offenders register for this!

It seemed a bit silly. I wasn't offended but I didn't particularly like it. A picture of Gay would have been more appropriate.

Im not offended, i just think its an incredibly cynical marketing ploy that was more about promoting their brand than the mans death and i dont see a problem with them being called out on it.

Would be more offended by any levels of Acrylamide present in the cooking process (of any high carb baked foods) such as Tayto crisps, than some morketing tweet. Not to mention the growing 25% obesity levels.

One report from PAS C030 published in 2014, p.48, showed (for the Cheese n' Onion) sample levels of 1,287 ug/kg.
Other reports/samples via the FSA showed lower readings around 500ug/kg, but still ever-present levels.

I haven't seen a single person offended by this. A few who have called it out for being in bad taste or cynical alright but no one taking offence.

Some of the right wing reactionary snowflakes on this website are virtually tossing off at the thought of someone being “offended” by Mr Tayto, even though not a single person has said that they found this Tweet offensive. Blowing their beans far too early.

This was widely reported years ago (applies to all baked crisps really).

Thing is no one really knows about it, Mr (cute) Taytoman and the likes of Walkers (just paid Maria Carey a large wad of cash for latest TV ad) are too busy marketing their 'great' products.

Then there's the obesity crisis, 8th in the world (Ire) according to Lancet 2014.

What the hell is wrong with people?

Gay Byrne is/was a national icon, larger than the person himself was. So for one Irish icon (Tayto) to tribute another is only commendable. You would think every poster personally knew the man, cop on would ye?

Mr Tayto is a marketing persona of Tayto Ireland, wholly owned by German company Intersnack.
You seem to be confused about the nature of marketing, Tayto and personhood.

So how the crisps are cooked is why there is an obesity crisis? Think it's more do with the amount of them people eat..

If it had of been MRS Tayto, she'd get a more lenient sentence :D:D:D:D:D:D:D

It was clearly an attempt to get some free advertising off the man’s death, how cut up do you think the cartoon potato actually was?

No confusion, read the post again, I'm not interested in ownership or companies, the term I used was 'Irish Icon' I don't think I need to explain that, do I?

Probably as cut up as the many who posted on the RIP Gay Byrne Thread or put pictures up on Facebook.

Tayto won the Ultimate Crisp Tournament so they have every right to do what they want.

Do you work in marketing or something?

You were in here just this morning crying because someone had a forum called Lolocaust. Look in the mirror, snowflake.
