Why do radio stations play weird techno music on Saturday nights?

Several radio stations such as 2fm and Spin SW play weird techno music on Saturday nights? Anytime I'm driving or in a car with someone and this is on they just turn the radio off. What's the idea behind it? The listening figures must be very very low. Why not just play normal chart music?

What time on a Saturday evening? As much as I like the classics that Jenny Greene or Dec Pearce plays I find it next to impossible to hear current dance music on Irish radio.

Radio na Gaeltacht play the weirdest music ever produced every night after 11.

I guess they're just looking to appeal to a growing audience.

To be fair, chart music is the biggest load of tripe these days with no substance at all and all just aimed at making quick money or selling a pair of headphones, so i'd happily listen to anything else to a degree.

I'm not sure what songs are being played at the time you're referring to but there is some great electronic music out there at the minute and also a lot of ****e that would fall into the same category as the chart music I mentioned above.

You're right, they should just play the same 40 songs that they play the rest of the week and never cater to anyone who listens to anything different.

Ya they should just continue to play the same cheese they play all day everyday

I didn't realise some radio stations still did this. It's a relic from the early 1990s (not that that's necessarily a bad thing).

Why is it a relic of the 90s? What was the logic to it being played at that time of evening back then?

My take on it is that it is night time at the weekend - they are not going to pay presenters/DJs to run a live show at inflated rates when listenership is at it's lowest cos everyone is out or whatever. They just stick on some playlist of obscure and, more importantly, CHEAP music tracks to fill the hours and in between adverts. It is better than the channel going off air.

2fm have done this since I was a teen in the mid 90s, it's not a new thing. I can't imagine listenership is very high on Saturday nights so they do this and people getting ready for a night out will have it on in the background.

Maybe they used to have it as background music back in the 90s but I'd say it is few and far between these days. Aside from being in cars, I cannot remember the last time I heard anyone listening to conventional music radio stations.
Spotify n itunes it is all round these days.

I'd say it is a relic of times past. Come to think of it, most of RTE is in itself a relic of bygone times.

Same reason why lots of stations have Irish language programming first thing on a Sunday morning or last thing on a Sunday night.

Low listenership but is part of fulfilling their license so it gets scheduled during periods of lowest listenership.

They should be using these slots to test out new presenters and stuff like that. It’s such a waste.

They do! We are not just talking about 2FM here. Plenty of stations will have younger weekend presenters who are 'cutting their cloth' on the locals in timeslots like these.

An Taobh Tuathail, IMO it's the best radio show in the country. Might seem weird to mainstream folks used to the pish that is on the radio most of the time, but I've found lots of great artists through that show that I wouldn't have heard of otherwise. I prefer their early week shows which are more chilled out stuff, they play more, as the OP says, 'weird techno'at the weekends.

Still much better than the same 20 songs over and over. All radio singles now are just pop singers with a rapper feature it's mindless.

The only decent thing on the Radio to me is Mystery train on Lyric fm, lots of weird and wonderful stuff on the go

Just off the top of my head

    RTÉ 1
    RnaG
    Lyric
    Rakes of local stations
    Today FM
    Newstalk

DON’T play techno on sat nights.

    Do they play Gabba?

Maybe it's a generational thing, but I quite like listening to radio, especially if its a good dj who is into the genre of music they are playing and the interaction they bring. Beats listening to a random playlist on spotify or itunes.
There are also plenty of big name dj's who have their own weekly radio shows. Usually go out on various platforms but often radio stations will pick them up and put them into their schedules.

Radio stations play stupid chart music all week and you have the nerve to moan about them playing techno music for a couple of hours on a Saturday night. Get a grip would ya

2fm now break their dance programming in two with an awful RnB show. If there's a any carry over audience at all for the late night sessions now I'd be amazed.

Don't think I've listening to Mr.spring since they got rid of electric disco from 7-10 and introduced Mo. K

Mo K's show would be more suited to a Friday or Sunday night and just leave Jenny Greene and Mr Spring on Saturday nights, terrible decision to split it with an RnB show..

RTE Gold even do it on Saturday nights, often it's old skool 70s, 80s, 90s and some 00s as well.

Are you sure its techno they play or is it just some mainstream dance music from those decades.

    RTE Gold play some 12" chart tracks from the 70s 80s 90s on saturday nights...reminiscent of the "12's on 2" programme on 2FM around 1987 / 88 ;)

the mo-kay show is obviously there for political reasons, nobody with a clue about music would put that schedule together, it's been done to kill off jenny and springer
