Netsource Self-Install

Okay, I thought I could handle the Netsource self-install, but, er, obviously not.

Reckon anyone could give me a pointer? I'm running XP, I've just got my Netsource pack, the release date was yesterday, and I've got an Alcatel Speedtouch 330 USB modem. I thought I could manage the settings, but I can't for the life of me figure out what I'm supposed to input and where. I tried to use the new connection wizard, messed about with the tcp/ip settings, uh, to no avail. I can't seem to figure out where to input the netsource settings for the Speedtouch, as there's no config menus to speak of.

Sorry if this is a bit vague. I guess I should have gone for the engineer, eh? I'm going to have to resign myself to the pile of helpless chicks who suck at I.T.

ETA: I do apologize if this is bad form, etc. If so, I'll go cry into my coffee and get an engineer out. :)

Would like to help out but I don't have Netsource so would not know what settings to input.

Try to post in the Technology you might get some help there.

1st make sure you line in setup right, that you only have the line spliter in, you don't need the other 2 filter's if you only have 1 phone in your house
you can install it from the cd i think you should install the cd and only plug in the modem when the installer ask's for it (i'm not to sure)
or you can plug in the modem and install the drivers from the cd when windows asks for them, then run the network wizard and install it as BB that needs to login as a password,
once you can input your password you don't need to enter your fixed ip, windows will figher it out for it's self
it's very important you install the right drivers for your modem they must have tthe same protocol as netsource PPPoE, you may have more than one dirver that fits that, but you will have to try then all, my own has 2 PPPoE but only one works
don't mind about your ip or DNS,
oo and make sure you put in the right VPI and VCI, they are like the phone number/Frequency your modem calls
    hope thaats helpfull for ye

Okay the first and most important rule to setting up DSL is to quote Douglas Adams:

    DONT PANIC!!!

Seriously, it isn't really hard, you just need to work your way through the setup 1 step at a time.

Now I don't have Win XP (I've Suse LInux and Win2000) and I don't have your modem, but it shouldn't be too hard.

    1) Have you gotten an email from Netsource that says the DSL is ready. It mightn't have even be ready yet.

    2) Have you installed the DSL filters on all the phone plugs in your house?

Okay now I'm looking at your modems manual:

    3) Have you installed the modem by one of the ways described in the manual?
    Is it working correctly?
Is it listed in winXP's hardware list?

    4) Set the Netsource settings, they are as so:
    VPI: 8
    VCI: 35
    Encapsulation: LLC
    Protocol: PPPoE
    Username: yourusername@netsource.ie
    Password: xxxx
    PPP Authentication: CHAP

    Primary DNS: 212.17.32.3
    Secondary DNS: 212.17.32.1

You may also want to enter your IP address as supplied by netsource.

    5) According to the manual, an icon appears in the System Tray and is coloured bassed on what it is doing, what colours is it showing.

    6) The manual has a troubleshooting guide, folow this step by step.

    7) There are two LED's on the modem, this shows the status of the modem, what are they doing?

Only after all of this, should you look at your computers settings, it is very easy really.

Also there seems to be Administrator tools on the CD, you might want to try and install them, they might have what you are looking for.

    PPP Authentication: CHAP

The tech support people at netsourse told me if you have an option to set it to "Auto" to do so.

Dont know how much difference that makes.

Thanks so much for the help, folks! :)

Yep, I just have the line splitter in. Only one phone, so I ignored the other filters. I have an extension going upstairs from the DSL plug to the DSL modem (anyone know if a phone extension cable affects performance?). Pretty sure I installed the Speedtouch correctly, but it didn't ask for the modem to be plugged in at any point. I just made sure I installed the drivers before I plugged the modem into a spare USB port. It's showing up in my sys tray, anyway.

I just can't see where the heck to input the correct VPI/VCI etc. into the Speedtouch -- I can see them in the modem diagnostics dialogue (and, heck, they're all kindsa wrong -- it's reading as PPoA, and the VPI and VCI are incorrect), but there's no control panel or config to speak of! I looked about for .ini files, and opened stuff up in notepad to see if there were any settings I could change, but nadda...

I guess I'll have another look about for drivers, and/or admin tools when I get home from work tonight. Do Netsource send you an email when it's turned on, then? I had no idea! I assumed mine was on, because the letter says Sept. 17th. You know what they say about assuming... ;)

The Speedtouch is just on loan, actually. Does anyone have any opinions on it, or want to rec a better modem?

Thanks again! I was just going insane last night trying to figure the thing out, and you've all completely calmed me down. :)

Well I got one, but perhaps it was because I was a business customer.

Well generally I would avoid USB modems like the plague, Ethernet modem/router are a much better option. I have a Draytek Vigor 2600 and I'm extremely happy with it, but it might be overkill for you, it cost about e210, but has lots of good features, 4 port switch, firewall, dhcp, VPN termination server, etc.

Simply computers in the UK are doing an Actiontec ethernet modem for £45stg. Good price for an ethernet jobbie.

alcatel speedtouch USB = PPPoA = point-to-point over ATM

Ethernet based ADSL modem = PPPoE = point-to-point over Ethernet

That's not true, they can be configured for both PPPoA and PPPoE.

Nope, must USB and ethernet modems can operate using both PPPoA and PPPoE, certainly my Ethernet router can.

The odd really cheap modem might be designed for only one protocol, usually when it is manufactured for some really large DSL provider in the US and comes with the DSL providers settings by default.

got a speedtouch here myself-it is a bit harder to configure than u mite think- u have to copy all the install files to your hard drive and then replace the ppoa file with a ppoe file then run setup from the copied folder and u shud be good to go-email if u need the file- i think i still have it somewhere
