How would getting married affect our social welfare allowances?

I am on one-parent-family payment, and he is on the dole. If we were to get married (in a registry office) one day (i.e. if we didn't want to wait years until we become rich and famous!), how would that affect our payments? What would we then be entitled to? Obviously I would not then be entitled to One-parent-family payment... Just wondering if it would be silly to go and get married when we just don't have the means to provide for our family without help at the moment... If we're still entitled to enough social welfare to get by on until things come together for us, then I would like to marry. Any advice would be appreciated! Thank you

He'd be entitled to an increase on his dole for a qualified adult (135 euro or so) and child (26)

You'd lose the one parent family payment.

If neither of you are working, you may be entitled to rent supplement.

If you're working, and he's on Jobseeker's Allowance (means tested) then your means will be taken into account for his payment.

We’re thinking of getting married but we lived together for a long time and were both getting the normal welfare payments... I know that our benefits will be cut short but just wondering what will they do if they find out we’ve been living together... will they just cut the benefits to both of us, will we have to pay back any monies?

Translation - we've been ripping off the DEASP for years and wonder what they'll do to us if they find out!

Answer: they'll either prosecute you if the amount ripped off is significant - unlikely - or they'll chase you to refund the overpayment until (literally) your dying day. They'll do this by reducing your weekly payments by up to 15% until the overpayment has been recouped.

Go into your local SW office tomorrow and tell them you are now living together. I assume one of you has been giving a false address up until now?

What is fraud? If they go in and tell SW that they are living together then is that not the truth?

Don't SW normally ask people to declare the date from which they commenced cohabiting?

Presumably you're suggesting that they lie about this?

You told them to go in and say from now which isn't true so they're committing fraud and you were advising them to do so....

    That's what fraud is ..

I can garuntee you that not an eyebrow will be raised as its far too much trouble to start investigating who lived where with whom for how long for the sake of €69 per week.

No false address but we live in the country so no house numbers. Anyway it’s only been one year we’re together since I’ve given up my job due to depression and moved in here. But yes we were a couple before that just not living together.

Do you think it’s more economically prudent to launch a fraud investigation into how long who lived where with whom, trying to find evidence of cohabiting, for the sake of €69 per week, or accept their declaration and adjust the payment downwards from here out?
Because I know what the position of SW is on this matter....

Is one of you on DA and the other on JSA?

It’s not JSA. I know I’m entitled to them monies. Even if we were married already, I’d be entitled to it. It’s now that I’m worried about because it’s been a year so I’m going on the normal DA soon... I’m a bit confused, sorry.

I was working until last year in the same place for 4 years. Then my depression got worse so I had to give it up. What I’m getting now is something like illness benefit I think, but I think I’m entitled to it because I was working.

If you think that the dept should waste our money investigating this couple just so that you can be “right” then absolutely, yes you’re right, I’m sure you always are.
On another thread you told a poster that there was a limit on the hours they could work while on DA. I don’t see you arguing with me about that?

What are you on about I never said anything about investigation and there is a limit one can work on disability allowance....

One person can be on DA/invp/CA and the other on a jobseekers payment without a limitation applying.
