So, how are everyone's club championships progressing? Any surprise contenders or shock eliminations?

In Meath, our senior hurling championship final will be between Kiltale and Kildalkey. Kiltale are looking for their 6th SHC title in a row. They fairly cruised through the group stage, dropping points in their drawn final game when they had already qualified as group winners regardless. Kildalkey had a stuttering start, losing by 10 to Kiltale in their first game. But they've gradually been building up a head of steam, culminating in an easy semi final win over Longwood. Kiltale made hard work of their semi final, beating Trim 3-16 to 3-14. Has the potential of being an excellent final, but you'd bet on Kiltale having the experience to grind out a final win.

Our senior football championship is at the quarter final stage. Last year's champions Dunboyne were surprisingly eliminated in the group stage.
Donaghmore/Ashbourne beat near neighbours Curraha in the preliminary quarter final. Curraha won their final 3 group games to make the knockout stages for the first time. They were involved in a relegation playoff to decide who'd compete in the Junior B championship in the not too distant past, but Don/Ash had too much experience for them.
Don/Ash will now play Gaeil Colmcille (Kells) in the quarter final. Kells eased through their group, losing only one game and putting up some huge scores (3-18 and 8-9 in their last two games). They've been one of the most consistent teams in Meath over the last few years without ever being able to make it to the final. They also have the "advantage" of not having many players on the Meath panel throughout the year, meaning their entire team can play throughout the league campaign. They're big favourites against Don/Ash, but they'll come up against one of the meanest defences in the SFC who've only conceded an average of 11 points a game. While they haven't been great going forward, it'll be interesting to see how the game pans out.

The winners will play the winners of a local derby quarter final where Ratoath play Skryne. Ratoath came second behind Summerhill in their group, missing out on top spot by scoring difference. They lost once in the group thanks to a last minute goal conceded to Summerhill. They also have the Wallace brothers back in the team along with Meath starters Conor McGill and Bryan McMahon. Their team is a mix of experience and youth but despite this being the third year in a row making the quarter finals, they've yet to make it any further. Skryne managed to stutter through to the quarter finals, coming second in their group despite having the worst scoring difference in a 3-way head to head. They finished on 6 points along with Dunshaughlin and Navan O'Mahony's. However, Skryne won both games against these sides meaning they finished ahead of them both (with Navan missing out). They shipped a huge 22 point defeat to Kells in their penultimate game in the group but regrouped to beat Dunshaughlin in the last game to make the quarter finals. They also have former Meath keeper Paddy O'Rourke in good form at full forward. The duel between him and current Meath full back McGill will be interesting. Ratoath are favourites, but Skryne have the experience of winning knockout games and I wouldn't bet against them if the game is tight with 10 minutes to go.

On the other side of the draw, Simonstown play Dunshaughlin. Simonstown were champions in 2017 & 2018 and are one of the favourites to reclaim the Keegan Cup. They topped their group with one defeat coming against Curraha. As stated above, Dunshaughlin came third in their group with losses in their first and final group games. They've had a good season so far and it's the first time since 2015 that they've made the quarter finals but Simonstown are huge favourites to get through.
The other quarter final sees Summerhill play Na Fianna. Summerhill have been runners up the past two seasons. They topped their group on points difference with their only loss coming against Donaghmore/Ashbourne. They come up against Na Fianna who came second courtesy of a winner takes all victory over Wolfe Tones in their last group game. Had they lost that game, they would have faced a relegation playoff. Hard to know exactly where Summerhill are, but they should have enough to account for Na Fianna.

The Meath SFC is being reduced from 18 to 16 teams from next season onwards meaning 3 teams will be relegated (along with one coming up from Intermediate). Already, two long serving senior teams have been relegated. St. Patrick's, Stamullen (since 2001) and Rathkenny (since 2006) have been relegated with Wolfe Tones and St. Colmcille's surviving. The last relegation spot will almost certainly be filled by Longwood who won last years IFC. Longwood have shipped and average of 30 points per game and have found the going in senior far too tough. They're up against Seneschalstown who should put them out of their misery.

The ever-convoluted Galway hurling championship finally gets down to the business stage this week, with 12 teams left and the 4 pre-quarter final matches down for decision. Oranmore/Maree vs Liam Mellows will generate interest, Oranmore won the intermediate All Ireland in february and are unbeaten in senior so far, Mellows made the last 2 county finals (won in 2017) but there's a sense they're not as sharp this year, so that could be an interesting one. Clarinbridge vs Cappataggle will bring a large crowd sunday aswell, two strong contenders in the eyes of many. Very wide open championship this year

The Wexford senior football championship enters the semi-final stages this Sunday (weather permitting). The curtain-raiser pits Castletown, last victorious in 2010, against St.Martin's, maiden winners in 2013. Both teams are serial semi-finalists, and both have lost two finals since winning their last (Castletown in 2011 and 2012; Martin's in 2015 and 2017). Given their respective pedigrees, they are the top two in the market to take the crown (St.Martin's 15/8 and Castletown 11/4), with Martin's 8/11 favourites to win here, probably based on their meeting in round one that St.Martin's edged by 1-15 to 2-8.

But without playing the cute hoor on it, I think my club (clue is in my username :D) have a brilliant chance. They were later back to training than usual this year, and were thus behind in their fitness in that opening round encounter, and have improved immeasurably since then. Timmy Walsh is back at the helm after guiding them to three consecutive county finals at the start of the decade (a notable achievement given the notoriously competitive championship), and he seems to have instilled the hunger back into the lads. They have scored 9-80 in their five group games and quarter-final to date, which works out as just under eighteen points per game.

St.Martin's have scored the least amount of goals among the four semi-finalists, with six from as many games, and while Castletown conceded more in their quarter-final against Horeswood, it was a higher quality game than St.Martin's stodgy quarter vs. Starlights. Ben Brosnan has lit up the championship so far for Castletown, hitting a healthy 4-27 (3-22 from play), and is the top scorer among those still left in the championship. Notably, they defeated Horeswood without another marquee forward in Jonathan Bealin to call upon. St.Martin's top scorer is the great Ciaran Lyng with 2-12 (just 1-5 from play, albeit in an injury-hit campaign), and they have since lost emerging star Barry O'Connor to the AFL- he scored five in that first round tie in April. St.Martin's do have a greater spread of individual scorers, but the feeling is they haven't really hit their stride in both codes this year and may have their eyes firmly on the senior hurling now that title-holders Naomh Eanna were knocked out last week.

Afterwards, Glynn Barntown and Gusserane lock horns in a fascinating duel, and a repeat of the 2016 final which Gusserane shaded with a late scoring run to secure their first title in 41 years. Amazingly, Gusserane has managed as many goals as both the other semi-finalists combined (fifteen), although its fair to say they are bit of an enigma. This year alone, they have shot the light outs against Kilanerin in round one (5-9 to 1-16), St.Martin's in round five (4-13 to 2-12) and most notably against defending champions Shelmaliers in the quarter-final, when their entire tally of 2-18 came from play. But they also scored just 0-4 in a loss to Castletown in round two, and fell to a 2-13 to 2-5 defeat to lowly Sarsfields in the penultimate group game. Jekyll and Hyde stuff. Former Wexford wing-back Adrian Flynn leads the way up front with 2-26 (1-10 from play), while next in line, Mark Rossiter, has compiled his 5-7 from the last four games after an injury absence.

Glynn drew two, won two and lost one of their five group games, and ground out a rather impressive 3-11 to 1-8 victory over St.James in the quarter-final. Interestingly, they are the only survivors from their group, which is either an indication that they are on the right curve or that their's was the "easier" group. Revenge will surely be on their minds after the final three years ago as they hunt for only their second senior title in all (1996). Their 12-57 is just about the lowest of the four semi-finalists, but from what I have seen they perhaps have the most rigid system to break down. Michael O'Regan has scored seven goals in six games so far, and is tough to handle when on form. Aaron Kehoe and Shane Wilde are next in the scoring stakes, but the availability of county hurling stopper Mark Fanning could be crucial, as he adds another attacking dimension. It should be a close game, all things considered, but I have an inkling for Gusserane.

The Intermediate A football final pits New Ross district rivals Clongeen and Rathgarogue-Cushinstown against each other, where I fancy Cushinstown to win back-to-back county titles after winning the junior last year. I fancy Glynn Bartown to pick apart neighbours Oylegate-Glenbrien in the junior football final, while Crossabeg-Ballymurn and St.Mary's Maudlintown should advance to the final of the Intermediate football final at the expense of Naomh Eanna and HWH Bunclody respectively.

I shall share my hurling thoughts ahead of the big games next weekend :D

In Galway football down to the semis, corofin will easily account for a rebuilding salthill side, while the other semi sees moycullen - a team on the rise - against traditional powerhouses Tuam. Great opportunity for both of them to make a final.

In Mayo it's basically as you were in the semis with castlebar, ballintubber through again along with ballaghaderreen however ballina pulled off a well publicised upset over breaffy in the quarters. I'd like to see ballina give it a real rattle. The mayo championship is getting quite stale over the last few years, it really needs some new contenders

    Semi Finals

Hurling finished in August and it was won this year for first time in 21 years by Causeway, they now have the long wait to play the first round of Munster against the Waterford intermediate club champions

Football started last week, round 2 is on this weekend, last chance saloon for the teams that lost last weekend

Round 2A is the winners from last weekend
Round 2B is the losers from last weekend

Game of the weekend is East Kerry V Austin Stacks, East Kerry welcome back David Clifford for this game so he will probably be the difference and it will see former champions Stacks exiting the championship

Tyrone Senior Football semi finals on this weekend.

Errigal Ciaran v Carrickmore Naomh Colmcille

A bitter rivalry from the early 00's which has fizzled out as Carrickmore have been poor for a number of years. Errigal big favourites with Peter Harte, Aidan Mc'Crory and Darragh Canavan the big names. With some other excellent players. Carrickmore relied on the old guard of former county men Mark Donnelly, Martin Penrose and Conor Gormley ( still playing ) to get them through a replay with Edendork in the QF. Errigal easily beat Omagh.

Coalisland Na Fianna v Trillick St. Macartans

Defending champions Coalisland aiming for 2 in a row which has not been done in Tyrone for 14 years. They beat last years finalists Killyclogher easily in the QF. No big star names but a very good team. Trillick look really good this year with Mattie Donnelly, Richie Donnelly, Lee Brennan and Rory Brennan the big names. Possibly not much between them, and should be a cracker.

    Intermediate Football

Final - Pomeroy St. Plunketts v Galbally Pearses

Top two in the league. Galbally 100% record and looking very accomplished. Pomeroy spearheaded by Frank Burns and the two McGearys. Should be a good game. Galbally favourites as Pomeroy indisicpline could cost them. Both will be promoted either way.

    Junior Football

Final - Kildress Wolfetones v Rock St. Patricks

2 points separate them in the league. However Kildress are in fourth place so could miss out on promotion if they don't win this. Ciaran Gourley still playing for Rock.

Down to the finals in football in Westmeath(mostly)

Junior - Ballynacaragy V Castletown/Finea/Coole/Whitehall = 2 teams expected to bounce back up after relegation in recent years. Ball look likely to win.

Intermediate - Milltownpass V Tang/Caulry  = Tang and Caulry replaying this week in a local derby but I think Milltownpass will probably win it out.

Senior - St.Lomans V Garrycastle = The 2 best teams in the final, should be a really tight game with Lomans probably marginal favourites

    Limerick

Hurling - final between Na Piarsaigh and Patrickswell. Undoubtedly the 2 best teams in the county. NaP will be favourites and should win it out, but are missing Shane Dowling (NaP lucky not to also be missing Ronan Lynch, who got a red card overturned). Should be a great final between 2 serious outfits with some serious duels (Cian Lynch v Will O'Donoghue, Diarmuid Byrnes v Kevin Downes, etc.)

Football - Newcastle West in the final, a minor surprise as they beat 3-in-a-row chasing Adare in the semi-final. Other semi-final is on tonight, between Oola and St Kierans. I'd fancy Oola to win that, but NCW will be favourites in the County Final

    When is the hurling final

One of the big beasts gone in Dublin SFC = Ballymun with Rock, the Smalls, James, Philly. They were unbeleiveably bad. Fianna with Murchan and Jonny were well prepared and for a change were not bullied.

Hard to call who might win it now. Crokes probably best place. Depending a lot on draw.

Out of interest who is managing Ballymun now? they should be doing a lot better than that with that amount of talent in their team. Dessie Farrell i know is the manager of Na Fianna and he's the likely the manager to replace Jim Gavin whenever he decides he's had enough with Dublin's seniors

Donegal Senior Championship Quarter Finals on this weekend with four group winners facing off against the runners up.

No surprises expected with semi finals likely to feature reigning Donegal and Ulster Champions Gaoth Dobhair alongside St Eunans, Kilcar and Naomh Conaill.

Kilcar have been the form team so far, but if Gaoth Dobhair are fit and able they are surely favourites to win again given the sheer amount of talent and experience.

Na Fianna in with any chance? They had that chunk of underage success so surely they are due to go, at least, close soon enough.

The Vinnies will hardly do it again?

Off top of my head, his name doesn't come to me! Barney is involved at some level.

The SFC is pretty hard to call. Crokes seem to be ahead of the pack, but I wouldn't be putting the house on it. Fianna beating Ballymun will be huge landmark for the younger players. They are obviously well organised at the back with Copper and Murchan, but attack was dangerous last night, and they won a lot of dirty ball.

    Wouldn't write Vinnies off.

The successful era of St Bridgets in Roscommon may have come to an end at least for a while. 10 county titles between 2005 and 2017, 4 Connacht titles (8 Connacht final appearances) during that period and one all ireland win and another all ireland final appearance where they lost an extremely close game to arguably greatest ever club side in Crossmaglen.

Bridgets lost comfortably to an emerging Pádraig Pearses in the quarter finals of the Roscommon championship last week and will look to build around a younger group of players going forward in intercounty regular Brian Stack, county under 20 star Brian Derwin and Ciaran Sugrue and Shane Cunnane both of the county under 17 side who reached all ireland final in 2017. Cunnane currently injured with ACL.

Semi finals in Roscommon set for tomorrow are
Boyle (Smith brothers) vs Pádraig Pearses (Daly Brothers)
    Roscommon Gaels vs Strokestown

No surprises in Donegal although Naomh Conaill didn't hammer Glenfin and Gaoth Dobhair needed extra time to beat Realt na Mara.

The draw didn't really matter as either way we have two tasty looking semi finals with St Eunans v Naomh Conaill and Gaoth Dobhair v Kilcar both taking place in MacCumhaill Park on Sunday.

I'd fancy Dunloy to get past them this time. Slaughtneil beat them 2 years ago.

Game today felt a bit enclosed. Always 4 or 5 in wrestling for the ball unlike the second game which was a more open affair.

All four favourites in the Meath SFC got through at the weekend. My own club, Ratoath, are in their first ever SFC semi final after a 19 point win against Skryne. Paddy O'Rourke was missing from the Skryne team who never got going on the day. The game itself resembled a challenge match at times.
Simonstown eventually got the better of Dunshaughlin even though they were 2 points down at the break. But they outscored them 2-8 to 0-3 in the second half to win by 9.
Kells overcame a slow start to beat Donaghmore/Ashbourne by 5 points. Donaghmore/Ashbourne were 5 points to 1 up heading into the second quarter but didn't score again before the end of the half and ended up 3 down at half time.
Finally, Summerhill were never really in trouble against Na Fianna, winning by 14 in the end.

    Semi finals are:
    Gaeil Colmcille v Ratoath
    Summerhill v Simonstown

We're guaranteed to have a somewhat unique finalist. Ratoath have obviously never made a final before while the last time Kells made a senior final was when they last won the Keegan in 1991.

So....my own club Castletown qualified for the Wexford senior football county final for the first time since 2012 yesterday when beating St.Martin's by two points. Its unfortunate to report though that the referee was putrid, particularly for ourselves. One of those performances where if a Martin's lad was swarmed by three Castletown players, he'd give a free in, but if it was the other way around he'd whistle for overcarrying. We went eight points up after 41 minutes but didn't score again which will be a concern ahead of the final, but its deadly to be there. Keep an eye out for the name Liam Coleman- he has all the tools to be Wexford's Brian Fenton.

Gusserane won the other semi. They have good firepower but lack the consistency to match it. I knew they would defeat Glynn as Glynn have no backbone when push comes to shove. It should be a corker of a county final in two weeks' time though.

No. Timmy Walsh is back at the helm after guiding them to the title in 2010 and the subsequent two finals after that. Quite the record

Was at this match and the first half of the Gusserane match. Pleased to see Castletown get to the final much the better team for the first 40 minutes and played better football than Martins who really relied on their physicality and got most of the scores from frees. Thought Ben Brosnan was great until he got injured and has that touch of class that's similar to Matty Forde. Would agree with you on the ref, very one sided and gave Castletown nothing. Personally from most of the matches that I've seen in Wexford in hurling and football the referees tend to give Martins most of the decisions.

Only saw the first half of the other match and thought Gusserane were going to canter to victory at one stage but then Glynn fought back and Gusserane didn't score for ages and it went in level at half time. From what I've seen I'd have Castletown as favourites for the final but a lot depends on whether Brosnan is fit.

It is unknown atm what will happen if Ballygunner win county. Do they get promoted to senior for 2020 and in turn be 2 Ballygunner teams in the championship. Ballysaggart will rep Waterford in the Munster Intermediate championship either way

Slaughtneil were beaten by Glen this evening in Derry Football championship.

It is their first ever senior county final which is hard to believe as they had a few players in the county team in 1993.

They play Magherafelt who are in the final for first time since 1983.

The Meath Senior Hurling Championship final will go to a replay after Kiltale and Kildalkey drew 1-13 apiece in the final in Navan yesterday. Kildalkey led for a lot of the first half and were 2 up at half time. Then they got a huge boost early in the second half when Kiltale and Meath corner forward Mark O'Sullivan was sent off. The gap remained tight until Kildalkey got their goal with 3 minutes remaining to go 5 up. It looked as though Kiltale's quest for 6 in a row was all but over. But they responded with 2 quick points to leave 3 in it going into injury time. Then a sideline into the Kildalkey box caused chaos and the sliothar broke to Jack Reagan who finished it to the net. Kiltale then amazingly went ahead straight away with a Reagan free.
But Kildalkey were awarded a free with injury time nearly up and Paddy Conneely popped it over to earn the replay which will be played Sunday week.
You'd have to feel that Kildalkey had their chance with being 5 points and a man up with time nearly up but they still couldn't see it out. I'd expect Kiltale to have enough to win the replay.

What happened there - that must go down as a big shock.
So Slaughtneil are all in now for the hurling. What type of squad have they there now - will they be fit for Dunloy again assuming they beat Middleton and Ballycran respectively.

Ballynacaragy won JFC, Caulry won IFC and Cullion won the IHC this weekend in Westmeath. All deserving winners from what I've heard

Dublin SHC heading towards predictable conclusion as revivified Cuala sweep all before them. Look better than ever and playing well within themselves.

They look a great shout to win the All Ireland, a savage panel of players

Three days away still, and I know I won't get a good night's sleep for a while, but the Wexford senior football final is the main event in the county this weekend. It has all the tools to be a humdinger, with both Castletown and Gusserane averaging around the seventeen point mark in scores per game, but Gusserane have the leakier defence and more of a tendency to blow hot and cold.

Even though Castletown have the championship top scorer in their ranks (Ben Brosnan with 5-29), Gusserane have really hit their stride in the last three games, and have compiled 8-43 during that time-frame. They also have been something of a bogey team for Castletown in recent years-they beat them in the semi-finals of 2014 and 2016, winning the title in the latter year.

I love a good coincidental stat (perhaps to make myself more confident :D) and the only other time Castletown won the title in the first year of a decade, they finished that decade as county champions too (1970 and 1979). We last won in 2010, which was incidentally the last time Liam Sheedy won the AI (our manager from 2010 has returned too :D). Gusserane are going for their seventh title. If Castletown win, they will move to joint-top of the roll of honour with Volunteers (11)- although Vols last one came in 1956, and they have dropped down the grades since. It's going to be close and hard to call. I hope it's not though and we are comfortable winners, if only for my own health.

Ferns and St.Martin's clash in the first senior hurling semi-final on Saturday. Ferns have never won a senior, but by dethroning defending champions Naomh Eanna the last day, a lot of the hurling fraternity took notice. St.Martin's have been perennial favourites for a few years now, but there is a feeling that they are plodding along more than usual this season and haven't been as dynamic since a round one thrashing of St.Anne's. They also have injury doubts too, and if the two players involved don't make it, it tips the balance towards Ferns. I actually think Ferns will win anyway as they have had a full three weeks to prepare for this while Martin's had a gruelling football semi vs Castletown in the interim.

Rapparees and St.Anne's go head to head in the other one. St.Anne's sprung a surprise in beating Shelmaliers last weekend, and are back-boned by Dee O'Keeffe and Liam Og McGovern. They have improved immensely from an almighty hammering to St.Martin's in round one, and confidence is brewing. However, Rapps look better placed to win this one. They have been knocking on the door without reaching the final in recent years and have a good, young team led by Liam Ryan and Kevin Foley. Fancy them to win through to their first decider since 2001 (I think)

That's their goal it would seem. Not a chance they will be beaten in Dublin.

Kilkenny is worth watching as weather and other unfortunate circumstances have changed things slightly. By no means certain Ballyhale will come out of it and don't know enough about it to guess. Whoever it is and Cuala be likely to win Leinster. Galway seems unusually quiet in that no team is being talked up as being ahead of the posse.

Munster with Piarsiagh gone and Cork in a flux again it seems, hard to know. A team like Cuala then are probably well placed and unlike others have had this in their sights long way back.

Have seen them a few times in SHC and league and they look seriously good.

Don't mean to be agnostic, but with Kenny gone you might compare the fortunes of Dublin as compared to Cuala. Cuala obviously have a set up that is effective regardless now of main man. I think Kenny is struggling with a less positive overall culture in county. Or perhaps I am being pessimistic!

Not the highest of quality of games this Dublin quarter final between Judes and fairly recent AI winner. A little surprised with the small enough crowd attending this game.

Not surprising at all seen as the game is on TV it takes away all the neutrals. Same happened the Donegal games the other week

Very poor crowd-but 5 o clock on a Saturday is hardly an ideal time for many. You’d wonder how much of an impact it being on the telly has had?

What was St Vincent's form like coming into this game? they are awful today.

Crowds always seem surprisingly poor enough any time I see Dublin SFC games on telly.

Given how the county team has been going in recent years you'd expect the club games to get a serious bump but not really.

I don’t see many more at any club games. People don’t care about club games for the most part.

Was over 6,000 was at a recent Cork semi final. At least this 2nd Dublin quarter final on RTÉ is better viewing so far but why have Dessie Dolan on both games (bad enough listening to him for one game)

How on earth the linesman thought McHugh worthy of a yellow for that is mind boggling.

Was he expected to just take it? Ridiculous officiating, he seen the whole things ffs.
