Hi all. I can see from previous posts this question has been asked. But the dates are really old.

Just wondering can you drive a car with an out of date NCT while waiting for your test. Mine is due in 2 weeks and I'm scared I'll get stopped and fined/points even though I've got a test confirmation date. I do alot of driving too so the chances of getting stopped are really high.

    Thanks

Driving without a valid NCT cert is an offence, 3 penalty points and a €60 fine.

    Legally no.

Rumours have it the Gardaí will show leniency if it's only recently out of date and you're able to show them confirmation of a test booking. But I'm just a stranger on the internet, take my advice at your own risk.

there's a facility to have a test well in advance, leaving it run out before the appointment is asking for trouble. Not worth the risk.

I'm sure they take into account waiting times in the various centres. A few years ago the waiting times were atrocious and I ended up cutting it very close to the line (possibly a week or so over) despite trying to book the full 3 months in advance of the due date. Well I got the first test in before the due date but ended up needing a re-test and that pushed me over the due date as the waiting times were about 8 weeks at the time. I don't think that's the case now, had to get the car NCTd a few months ago and ended up getting a test in plenty of time.
