I don't get Joel Kinnaman he is TV's version of Jai Courtney to me.

Coincidentally they both starred in the god awful Suicide Squad.

Like Disney, I'm not going anywhere near this streaming service til I can see a reasonable body of content - and even then; this looks interesting but one show can't sell a service. At least Netflix and Amazon both started as a provider of other peoples' content before they got into their own productions...

Agree about Kinnaman, he has one emotive expression - constipated startled rabbit - and that's about it.

Looks decent enough, though as coincidence has it, this years Hugo / Nebula Award winner was "The Calculating Stars", itself a story set in an alternative America, where women struggle to become astronauts. The inciting incident is a bit different, and less overtly SciFi here.

So they are going The Man in the High Castle route.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

1: That was done well. The writing and directing stood out.
That was really good!! Somehow they got me feeling angry that Apollo 10 didn't get to land, then they sold me on the crash killing them. Then that huge sense of relief when they came back over the radio. Wow!

I'm probably gonna be trying to figure out a way to talk about this episode for a while without saying what happens in the ending. Even saying it was really good feels like it might spoil it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

    2: Boom! There's the spark!

    I wonder if they'll make
her a daughter of one of the
    Night Witches

Before that, the episode felt like it was tame compared to the first.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,881 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

Didn't enjoy the opening episode to be honest episode two it starts to show some promise and it starts to find its feet in episode three for me which is enough to bring me back next week for episode four.

Chris Bauer automatically brings a show up a level or 2

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

    3: What an episode!

I swear, right at the end there as Gordo
was driving up, I was all "not her, not her, not her, not her, not her, not her". Well done scriptwriters, well done. Phew!

    I'm guessing
they got me on how Gordo ****ed her over on the phone and then how much heart she showed on the hike

I spent almost the first 20 minutes of episode three, chuckling or right out laughing out loud at some of his reactions! :)

ive only seen the first episode,i didnt know what spoiler was and my wife didnt know there was a spoiler at the start. it does look interesting, does it get woke in later episodes?

It feels like they intended the first 3 episodes to give a feel of where the show is going.
The first episode sets up some of it but not all of it.

    5: I wasn't expecting that!
    MOON BASE! W00t!

Now I'm not sure where this series is going.
Time jumps to bigger developments and continued solar system exploration would be cool. Moon base means a Mars mission is definitely in!

6: Good thing they put that in the ending cos for the most part, that episode felt dull.

    I'm guessing
Gordo just spotted a USSR base they didn't know about

Thought Apple released episodes on a Friday?

Latest episode is available, same with their other shows

Not a great episode. I did like it initially but it's getting a bit boring now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

7: Felt like.. Bye Bob, Bye Audience!

Like it feels like the pacing of the show is now a bit all over the place.

If this was a binge show it might work but this doesn't feel like they'll keep their viewship where they need people to come back week-to-week in the middle of the streaming wars.

Maybe it'll work if they have a big story
on the Moon and they need Baldwin stuck alone up there to be a part of it.

war, a cover up or maybe he didn't even kill him.. just knock him out so he could bring him in a cuff him or something

What a great finale to the season.

That was a really great season of TV.

Last 2 episodes won me back. Great end to the season

There is a scene after the credits by the way and it's worth seeing :)

10: That was cool. The throwing of the fuel was SO tense!
The bonding with the USSR Cosmonaut was done well. Gordo and Tracy patching things up felt grand. Deke coming around and Pams story has developed well throughout the show. Margo showing her feelings as well. Then at the end with Ellens speech.

Overall I really liked the season. Good variety of stories, nostalgia, space, politics and science fiction. Saying that.. I think it's good they got a second season in advance.. I'm not sure there's as big an audience for the show as they might want.

Definitely wanna see season 2 now! :)

    Great end song!

Overall....liked it. Stumbled a bit with its overt political statements, obvious gender diatribe etc, which treaded the line at times, but ultimately, a worthwhile series, in which most characters grew, the writing became tighter and the overall story, albeit hyperunrealistic at times, was engaging.
Nowhere near the same level in the alternate historical stakes of say, The Man in the High Castle, but one that deserves more of an audience.

Just started watching this - great show.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,434 ✭✭✭Homelander

Just finished it there. It was a really good season, and I'm a sucker for historical shows, as well shows that explore areas largely untouched in the world of television - this does both really well, spent ages afterwards reading about the space race.

Really good characters and great acting too from all the main players. I probably benefited from being able to binge it all, so the pacing didn't really bother me but in hindsight it is quite uneven at times.

I couldn't figure out why Karen Baldwin was so absurdly familiar but I wasn't familiar with her name at all, then at one point she says to Wayne "you don't need to thank me" it clicked straight away - she's Wraith in Apex Legends. Once it dawned on me, I couldn't hear anything but Wraith.

    Anyway, a great show. I'm delighted there's a S2 approved.

Without spoiling, how alt is the alt history here? Obviously the jumping off point is quite a big one re. the moon landing IIRC the premise; beyond that, does the show unravel history much past that seminal event?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,434 ✭✭✭Homelander

In a nutshell it's basically a world in which the space race didn't end when it did in reality. That's the major divergence from history rather than having the Soviet's land first.

Only heard about this recently but ploughed through it, its fecking great! Episode 9 is the best episode of any show this year. Debating staying up to watch the finale but I have a 12 hour shift in the morning.

Yeah it was that clip randomly popping up on my Youtube feed that tipped me off in the first place.

    Just curious:
After the Russian helped him get the fuel from the old lander and he took off to save the 2 in orbit, the cosmonaut turned around and looked at the Jamestown base, kind of looked like he was going to do something while it was empty, did I miss anything there or did nothing happen?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

I don't think I remember anything around that. For season 2 I'm guessing
there'll be a time jump so guessing not.

Finished episode 8 of Season 1 last night, being one of those shows I kept meaning to check out but never getting around to it.

It's an excellent production: great characters and set-up, with this alternate America fascinating in all the little ways things diverge. The actual drama at NASA & its attempts to catch up with the Soviets has made for gripping stuff, all the while sticking (or seeming to stick) to the science of it all.

If there's one quibble? It's a shame its home is one of the smaller streaming networks 'cos IMO this absolutely deserves a larger audience on Amazon or Netflix.

As luck would have it, finally finished season 1 the other day. What a show, really deserves so much more plaudits and column inches than its otherwise getting. Great characters, setting and manages that difficult storytelling style of presenting practical problems for the cast to solve - but without resorting to the Idiot Ball trope to get there. Says a lot for a show when characters I started hating, by the end I was rooting for (such as Mrs Baldwin, who also skirts the Girl Power Togetherness cliché by being against female astronauts).

Its incredible tbh, I just cant understand the lack of hype, pity its not on Netflix. Chernobyl is the only thing I can think of that comes close in recent times.
