Hopefully not, Its a soulless kip run by an ardent hard brexit manipulator. A man who wants to see his country dive into recession so it pushes punters through his doors.

Plenty of soulless kips in Limerick run by people who want to charge you through the nose, offer no decent selection and then whinge nobody's drink in pubs.
I wouldn't mind a soulless kip with reasonable prices.

    Yes.

One Irish pub chain makes 80% gross profits on beer.

Some Dublin pubs expect to make 30% net profit.

JD WS makes 7.8% profit, they pass the bulk discount back to me.

    That's why I like them.

They are even selling Kombacha now for £1.50. I paid £3 last time in a shop.

Three for 6.50 in Abbey street, I think.

And eh at the risk of copying Pub Spy criteria but paying 6.50 a pint in some Dublin pubs whose toilets are barely more than pissoirs... actually they would be more efficient.

I would hate to see no other option for a pub other than wetherspoons, but that won't happen. I can't understand why someone would be against them coming to Limerick for example. It's just another option for people to go, you're not forced to go there. Fair enough if you don't like the owner, but come on, look at the pub lobby in Ireland. They were against the smoking ban and drink driving limits lowered ffs, never mind minimum price drinks in off licences or local price fixing. Probably hundreds of other things behind the scenes. The same 6 or 7 beers in pretty much every pub in the country for years too. That's only changing in the last 10 years. Fúck the pub lobby.

Go to google street view and look at the building on abbey street. You can change the date and go back ten years. No idea what that building was used for, but it always looked terrible and pretty much unused. Now it's a pub and they did a great job inside. If that's what they're going to do with disused buildings, bring it on.

Pub industry here is like a bloody cartel at this stage. Always moaning in public and lobbying FF/FG in private to change laws to suit themselves rather than actually competing in the market. Not happy with getting off licenses to shut at 10pm and literally treating the nation like children now they're trying to get minimum unit pricing in under the guise of public health, all despite the fact we already have some of the highest alcohol prices in the EU. When is enough enough with that lot?

they actually want excise dropped now!!

    https://www.thejournal.ie/alcohol-tax-reduction-budget-2020-4812233-Sep2019/
THE DRINKS INDUSTRY Group of Ireland (DIGI) has called for excise tax on alcohol to be lowered by 15% over the next two budgets as the value of sterling continues to drop.

Our excise on beer is similar to UK excise.

    Our prices are higher.

    Why?

Higher wholesale prices and higher gross margins expected by pubs.

The publicans should look at the brewer's prices/margins, instead of looking for a cut in excise.

    I absolutely love wetherspoons.

I can afford a good pub, because I have an okay job. But many people here in Ireland are not in a similar situation. The lady behind the counter at your local spar, the cleaner in your office, the brazilian washing your dishes at your local restaurant etc.

They want to go out too, have drinks in the pub and have some (very mediocre) food. They can do that at Whetherspoons, but they would be hard pressed to do these things in any normal dublin pub where you are often charged 6 quid for a pint and the food prices are also pretty high (for what is not always better than Whetherspoons even !).

And yes even I with my good job go to whetherspoons sometimes, although I find that often we get tired of the boring atmosphere and head elsewhere after a few.

Sorry I strongly disagree with the sentiment about his business failing. From living in the UK every Wetherspoons I pass or visit is packed. They open numerous locations in empty town centre locations often doing excellent jobs revamping old buildings while offering excellent value for money.

Taking the politics out of it and being objective its a very successful model and will be a success in Ireland.

Well the 20 Million pound drop in profits begs to differ with your disagreement, The mans a prick. I dont care much for his business model. Ive been in spoons up and down the UK and im not sure which ones you visit but theyre not always packed. And plenty of them are soulless reconditions of the old legion vibe off them.

Yes they do a good job on some in some areas, but thats not across the board.

As i said he's losing money. He wants 'foreign beers' off his shelves for some mad reason. Il keep my money in my pocket cheers.

Agree his Brexit shyte is off-putting but I'd rather he made cents on my pint than the Irish pub barons make euros on it.

Who's defending irish pubs? Im certainly not. That shower are a bunch of clowns too.

But im not handing over my cash to an ultra nationalist like horsehead. He doesnt care a jot for the irish industry. Is he over here supporting local irish brewerys ? if so how ?

If all i want is a cheap pint in a souless venue then yeah spoons woohoo. but i like to see my cash going into an irish business.

He wants EU27 products off the shelves. Absolutely fine with anything from beyond there.

Somehow doubt he'd roll that out entirely in Ireland or that we'd get particularly interesting beers from further away in to replace either.

All of his Brexit grandstanding guff is kept out of the Irish pubs and their point-of-sale material. JDW Ireland's policy seems to be to pretend none of it's happening.

Which would make you wonder what will happen when it hits

Popped into 'Spoons in Carlow for breakie on the way to the Ploughing yesterday. Savage value.

I look forward to the day there's one in every city and major town in the country so we all can benefit from said value. Or indeed not as one might prefer.

Had a look around the one in Lr. Abbey St. last night. Bit of a soulless place and crowd seemed a little rough.
Pint of Punk IPA for less than a fiver though!

Yeah I was there last week.

I thought I would like it because of the low prices but its the first pub I've been to that doesn't feel like a pub just a place people happen to drink.

Wetherspoons is somewhere your likely to go for Pre Drinks then on to a real pub.

Went in for a pint as I was at a Culture Night thing across the road.

Started to get some hassle from a traveller, who aggressively tried to move me from my seat.
But when he saw I was with my other half he completely changed his tune and backed off.

Another guy gave me a load of vouchers for a €3.50 pint of Punk so I might be back!

Bizzare so he came over and said "I want to sit there"? Just wondering as was in some rough bars when I was younger but no one ever asked for my seat!

That's just part of their culture boss.

He started pushing me out of the seat. I thought he was trying to pick pocket me so moved onto my feet and stepped back, and he sat down. He then said it was his seat and there was nothing I could do about it. Rather than argue with the irrational guy I started to move off, he noticed my other half, apologised and gave me back the seat. It was just all a bit bizarre alright.

Was it because your other half was there ? Appearing solo? I would be concerned about such an incident.....

It seemed like he was aggressive towards a lone male, but didn't want to be aggressive while I was accompanied by a woman. Not sure if it was part of some larger plan or just part of the rules about how they conduct themselves in general.

They conduct themselves according to rules??

    I'm partial to your abracadabra,

I don't think that's a rule. I was in a pub with a girl and a traveller keep asking her to dance. After several refusals he started to get aggressive with us. We just moved pub.

I'm guessing the lad came back from the toilet or somewhere a bit drunk, got confused about which table he was sitting at and thought you had taken his seat.
When he noticed that your partner was in the the seat beside/opposite him he realised his mistake, apologised and found his original spot.
I've seen it happen thousands of times over the years.

No, the two of them were floating around, they didn't have seats. My partner wasn't sitting with me at the time but came back to the table. Then when he rejoined his mate, they continued looking around the place, presumably for seats. Maybe they were just on drugs or had too much to drink.
