Overdue gas bill on a pay as you go meter.

    Hi I've recently moved and today I was issued an overdue gas bill for my previous address. But the gas there was on a pay as you go meter. And when I left there was credit still in the meter. So how have I been given an overdue bill when any time I needed gas i would have topped up and used that amount until the next top up??. What's the point in having a pay as you go meter and then be issued a bill when you close an account??. Please explain.
