Someone I know whose car was inside was asked for the keys to drive it onto the roof. Others I know had them towed with no request for keys

Interesting. Were the keys handed over?

Remember going there with my mum I would spend an hour in the sport shop which was at one end of it while she did the weekly shop in Quinnsworth. Trying to remember what the same of that sports shop was now, just remember it seemed massive at the time, although admittedly I was quite small myself then!
Leisure something or other I think?

Was a great shopping centre though.

I'm not sure if you're referring to the Johnny Giles store, which sold toys, sports gear, outdoor clothing and equipment and tools etc.

My friends and I used to visit it frequently for nefarious purposes.

    Spot on, that's the one!

There was a nice restaurant in that complex as well, it was owned by the lad who went on to run Westimers/Elroys I believe, Eric Tracey I think was his name? I remember my mam would bring me in there for a coke and a cake while she had a coffee after the shopping. Trying to recall what else was in there now, there was a newsagent too I vaguely remember, and a dry cleaning place (McKenzies?).

The newsagents was O'Leary's. They also sold some toys, I used to get Dinky cars, some Lego and Airfix model kits from there.

The Zafira has been covered over for forensic examination when it is eventually retrieved. Would there be much of the heater matrix left even if the car is burned to a bare shell? this is probably what they want to look for as it was this element that was causing the fires. I know there was a suggestion of everyone claiming off the Zafira's insurance and let them battle it out with Opel to see who takes the brunt of it all. Is that unlikely to happen? i know of a similar position to this a number of years ago, car caught fire, other cars were damaged as a result, the 'offending' vehicle's insurance company refused liability and the other car owners had to sort it out themselves.

Should have read won't be proof as nothing left... But yes I agree

Word on Red FM is that the financial implications of the fire are €25m and more job losses.

In this video somebody records themselves walking through Douglas village in 1999!

I'd well believe that, damage to property, loss of earnings etc etc, it will be spectacular.

Will this be the single biggest motor insurance claim to happen in Ireland on a private motor policy? Don't they only go as far as €30m? Be interesting to see how long Opel remain involved for.

I'd imagine so, can't remember anything like this before, at least nothing that could be directly connected to one single policy holder.

Opel are 'assisting' investigators, that's all they'll be allowed do really.

I don't either, definitely worth keeping an eye on it all.

I'd love to see the Zafira driver's renewal quote if they are landed with the full bill.

That bit when they ask you if you've had any claims in the last 5 years

    Yeah :D

I don't even know how one could possibly word that, even if you managed it, once they hear the value of the claim and the phone line goes dead :pac:

Probably something along the lines of: 'D'ya remember that shopping centre that was in Douglas?'

Is the story that the woman drove into the carpark with a smoking car verified or is it still hearsay?

no idea, but if true she should face criminal charges

Customer Service Representative: Yes madam indeed i do.

Lady looking for quote: Yes that was me, i drove my car which was billowing smoke, into an enclosed multi-storey car park and parked it next to 60 cars and allowed it to become engulfed in flames before i decided to look for help.

No matter what charges if any, the penalty would be minimal if any.

"But yer honour my client is a single mother of x amount of children and was blissfully unaware of what was going on around her"

I have no doubt the lady will be named eventually, imagine what her neighbours must think of her though, i know if she was my neighbour i would have some very impolite words to say.

Just say the car was outside the car park and smoke was coming from it, abandon the damn thing and call 999/112. I genuinely think we will never see the likes of this again in Ireland.

I wouldn't be alone on that to be fair. ;)

Until a thorough investigation is concluded we can merely speculate dear Sir :)

We're going off absolutely nothing but rumours and you're feeding the mill by exaggerating them. There's no need for it.

I think it’s very unfair to be speculating without facts.
When rumors spread it’s the most interesting versions that become popular, not those based on fact.

I'm merely discussing speculation already in the public domain. I very much look forward to the facts being published nonetheless as will most here.

I mean that one foot should be kept on the ground. There was one poster here who thought it was a disgrace that there was no facility to allow fire trucks drive into a burning building.....

I'm solely responsible for exaggerating them? better call in the firing squad to sort me out then.

I'm doing what pretty much everyone else is doing, discussing what is alleged to have happened, there's one for your detectives pipe.

Lots of lessons are being learned, stupidity is a two way street you know :)

Peak boards.ie. Close the thread. Ban everyone who isn’t have a solemn staid conversation based solely on fact.

Honestly I wonder how some people get through the day.
