Women's football qualifying on RTE 2 - legit or sjw out of control?

BBC brought this in a while ago and RTE is now copying them - showing the women's football qualifying on main prime time tv now. Hardly anyone watches women's football. Sure if you push it and push it then you will get artificially more viewers of it, what about all the other fringe sports and activities they could be pushing instead?

Ireland vs Montenagro Women's qualifying - not even a playoff or critical game, a by-the-numbers qualifying game. Even Ireland vs Montenagro men's qualifying would be a borderline game. Montenagro has a population of 623,000 people, it's about the population of Cork county.

I could just change the channel, but the people of Ireland are paying to subsidize this. I think it's ridiculous.

Quality on show is scour. 0 technical ability. Even the games in the World Cup with USA, France, Netherlands the supposed top teams were punctuated with technical errors. The fiver in to see it is robbery.

Shamrock Rovers played Bohemians in front of over 7,000 people last Friday night, among them were the President of Ireland Michael D. It's been nearly 100 days (98 I think) since our national broadcaster have shown a game from our league. Gobsh*tes.

There is a big push right now to promote the game, which I don't have an issue with. I rarely watch women's football as the quality is poor, but if it encourages more women to take up the game, then fair play.

As for the taxpayer/ TV licence payer subsidizing it, there are many worse things they p!ss money away on. Tubs and reality TV shows at the front and centre

I suppose to try and make it more popular, you need to air it. It might not work but not airing it achieves nothing. I’m pretty sure we pay for many ratings flops as taxpayers.

I think we should see more women's sport on national tv, and encourage women to play sport....young women are being really damaged by social media, but the sports they have chosen, football, rugby and GAA are on tv all the time and the women's game is a considerable distance in terms of quality to which we are accustomed.

They could easily show Hockey or Basketball, sports we don't see to often and can be quiet entertaining.

Are they being damaged by social media????
Many women that grew up alongside me in the 80s and 90s quit sport in their early teens.
It just wasn't cool and they all left football and gaa.

Agree with this, another sport is womens tennis, IMO a superior game to watch to men's tennis, which is all power serves.

Look, the quality is not good, yet. The final of the World Cup was presumably one of the best in terms of technical ability and it wasn't particularly entertaining. It was no worse than every MLS game I've watched though. All 20 outfield lads going for the ball like its a schoolyard game, mixed with terrible passes going astray. They can't all be as good as myself and Lionel Messi, I understand that.

Complaining about RTE showing any sport involving our country instead of a repeat of an old US sitcom and bringing SJW into it is absolute bollocks. If you plan to watch the next abomination involving our mens team, why not support the women too?

Last week, the BBC put up a headline that Bronze and Van Dijk win the UEFA Player of the Year.

I was bemused. How did I not hear about this Bronze? It was the women's award!!

Score flashes are not distinguished by male/female any more.

If you click on "Wales vs Northern Ireland" tonight, it's the Euro 2021 woman's qualifiers. They now have equal prominence with the men's game.

Spot on. Or importing soap operas from overseas. No quarrel with RTÉ screening women's football, if people find it objectionable there are other TV stations.

This is catching me out all the time now on the news websites.

I see fixtures listed and immediately think "didn't know they were playing tonight", usually followed a few seconds later by "ah, must be a women's game".

It's both following the "making a distinction between males and females is a sin" commandment and also a classic case of bait and switch. Yeah, the name of it is "Euro 2021 Qualifier", no "Women's" in it to make it clear like they would if they were honestly trying to convey useful information that people would care about.

Another thing I saw recently was on sports scores on Sky News they had scores like "Swindon Town Women 1, QPR Women 0" putting the "Women" actually in the name of the team itself. This is actually making it more clear who is being referred to, but it just seemed very strange. Maybe there was a backlash against not making it clear so they came up with putting Women in the team name.

Standard is awful. The national broadcaster shouldn’t be showing it. Also, women don’t watch sport in the main. It’s a very niche market. Why not show LOI or LSL, standard would be about 100x better.

Or even a dog chasing a ball around a field, that would only be about 20x better standard, but better to watch.

Because showing the highest standard game isn't the goal here. If it was we wouldn't show the male National team often.

It probably cost RTE nothing to buy the rights to and nothing is lost due to it. It's not an either or (though I agree their LOI coverage is poor)

I absolutely have no problem with the promotion of womens sport, the women's world cup was decent and I hope the sport grows, certainly I hope in future they are paid a lot more than the plumbers wages they currently get.

But its the way its promoted with elements of misandry and politiking is what can be irksome, case in point this nonsense article by the bbc (the stuff about LGBT rights is worthy but the rest of it, christ).

I'd sooner watch that than **** like the LLS or Dancing with the RTÉ Canteen.

I have no interest in the women's game but plenty women play it and young girls too, the success of the women's WC means there's clearly some audience for it.
