Convert Trek 1.2 into cyclocross bike?

I have an 2009 Trek 1.2.
I'm tempted to convert it into a cyclocross bike and maybe try my hand at a race or two.
What's going to be the limiting factor here - clearance for tyres?
Would I have to swap out the side pull calipers for cantilevers? I presume this is possible?
If all this is possible - what would be the cheapest wheelset and tyres I could get that would do the job?

You can't change to Cantilever brakes on that bike.
Keeping the bottom bracket and brake calliper areas clear of mud would be next to impossible.
Tyre clearance would be a problem.
I'd say, the maximum width tyres possible on that bike would be 25mm. I doubt you'd get 28mm on.
