Looking to put together something like this:

Has anyone attempted this? Also, anyone know where I can get decent sized planter boxes at a reasonable cost?

A few issues I would have with that spec...
No membrane to stop the sand/etc filling up the gaps and eventually blocking the whole thing up.
Also, on "French Drain" type pipes like that, the holes should be placed on the bottom, not the top!

I wonder how that set up would work in our climate- would the high volume of rainfall we get not just wash any nutrients out of the soil/ growing medium in short order. You might end up with nothing capable of growing there only weeds and moss.
