    Who the hell would want to use a greenway there, North Cork is boring as hell, there is nothing of interest, why would you come to Ireland to walk along or cycle along that trail and get soaked wet and be ripped off in restaurants, pubs and hotels. It would be a gross waste of taxpayers money when the line should be just mothballed for a future reopening when Oil runs out.

    No, any suggestion is only made to make enthusiasts for car based land use and transportation policy have a funny feeling in a special place. Like Kanturk.

    North Cork has spectacular inland beauty with some great scenery and a very rich biodiversity. It encompasses 4 special areas of conservation with the Blackwater, Shannon, Suir and Killarney lakes catchments.
    Kanturk is a very interesting place with a huge number of buildings on the NIAH and it's setting over three distinct parts is quite unusual.
    Where North Cork falls down is the lack of accommodation and eateries.

    Any reopening of the Newmarket line would have to give full consideration to an extention on to Meelin and Rockchapel. For far too long, the industrial development potential of Meelin and Rockchapel has been stymied by the lack of a mainline rail link.

    It was only a very short branch line, but had plenty of interest. The Blackwater and the Allow, Dalua and the Brogeen were all crossed by the line, making it quite scenic and it passed right by Kanturk Castle which was important enough to be owned by the English National Trust at one stage. Kanturk is an exceptionally pretty town, do you know any other small town with three (or is it four) parks within it?
    It's rather late to think of mothballing it when it was ripped up in the 60s.

    It's got a few nice things, but hardly excitement central.

    Pints are cheaper than Cork or Dublin I'll bet. Eating options perhaps limited. The one big hotel in the area was closed and demolished years ago.

    I've been studying maps of late from the Waterford border back as far as Newmarket, there is potential for a greenway from Fermoy to Mallow and Banteer to Kanturk.
    The Kilcummer Viaduct would be a spectacular feature of a greenway as well as the old railway bridge in Fermoy.

    Not knocking the funicular it could be interesting as part of a future commuter network but Industrial development must come first and links to deep water ports have to be the priority.

    If they can use deep cuttings, tunnels, embankments and viaducts in the alps, the same would almost certainly meet requirements in Duhallow.

    The next step is to run a single issue candidate in the next general election, if the numbers stack up, there could be a minister for Meelin and nothing could hold this project back.

    Doneraile Park is stunning as are the Ballyhouras. Ballyhass lakes are great fun. Prices in North Cork are very reasonable. I'd personally love to explore the area further via Greenway.
