Congrats Kolido. Glad to see the back of that round :D

2nd I'll take that, I honestly thought that was going to be a flop, the elusive 1st place in a category still awaits.

That Brotherhood Of Man track is brutal, sorry Mick.

But those dance moves alone make it a great video

There were so many options for this category, but here are just a few more that I could have gone with:

Salvador Sobral - Amar Pelos Dois (Portugal 2017) - this stood out by being so different to everything else. A really simple old-fashioned jazz ballad that sounds like it could have been composed by the Gershwin brothers. Proof that Eurovision can really be a song contest and not just about flashy gimmicks.

Blanche - City Lights (Belgium 2017) - it didn't work so well live and ultimately finished 4th, but this is a really strong example of a contemporary pop song with a solid beat and understated vocal. No cheese or belting required.

The Common Linnets - Calm After The Storm (The Netherlands 2014) - another "less is more" song, a really strong country-tinged folk ballad (and I'm not a big country music fan in general). No gimmicks, no big pyro or flashy costumes, just a simple melody with two strong singers.

Loreen - Euphoria (Sweden 2012) - I thought at least one person may have picked this, not only is it a belter of a tune but Loreen's ability to sing so strongly live while performing that complex, Kate Bush-esque choreography makes it stand out even more.

Eimear Quinn - The Voice (Ireland 1996) - this is Ireland's best ever song at the Eurovision. I will not be accepting any opinions to the contrary.

Secret Garden - Nocturne (Norway 1995) - if I was pushed to pick the greatest Eurovision winner ever, this is probably the one I'd pick. Submitting an almost entirely instrumental number was a pretty bold move, but it really paid off. Especially since it's such a beautiful, haunting piece of music. Plus the violinist is Irish so it *almost* counts as another Irish win! :pac:

Friderika Bayer - Kinek mondjam el vétkeimet (Hungary 1994) - this was an entry the same year that "Rock n Roll Kids" won. Ireland actually gave 12 points to this song, and it's easy to see why. A really simple but beautiful ballad. I don't understand a word of Hungarian but in this song it certainly sounds very melodic and easy on the ears.

Perhaps all of these would have scored as badly or worse tonight, but sure what can you do?! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

One final note: 2019 was a really good year for Eurovision (imo). At least four or five songs from this year's contest were also on my list....but I've thrown in more than enough links for now!

Really big fan of this one. I always think of Florence and the Machine when I hear it.

Just catching up now, Kol you're a sneaky sneaky sneak ;)

Thanks again Necro, but mostly thanks Stu for enduring and letting us witness your suffering :p

9th Place: Pollaponk - No Prejudice

Necro: So the entrant asked me to look them in the eye and tell them this isn’t a proper Eurovision entry. Well it is, of that there is no doubt. Though is it actually that good?

I didn't realise that was a requirement this round :pac:

    14th Place: Morena - Vodka (Malta 2008)

Necro: Europop EXPLOSION! Not for me, gonna say it right now. I just don’t like these songs that try and stick in your head without actually being slightly subtle about it. Vodka over and over again, is this a song or a horrific advertisement campaign? Also this sort of song imo has led to a loss of popularity in the contest in the last decade as there’s multiples of this type of song.. EVERY. SINGLE. YEAR. Singer is smoking hot though, so there’s that :P

Stu Redman: Necro, why do you hate me?

    Necro: 13th
    Stu: 14th

    4 points for
    Tammy! ermagered

That's me on the couch, lads...though it should be her for that song choice :D

It is entertaining watching the emotional breakdown. Sorry Stu :p

That's what it was getting to at 5am this morning!

I started well by giving the playlist a couple of listens last Wednesday night in the aftermath of the Irish round. However, the days just blitzed by since then with work. I got in at 4am this morning and realised I still had to listen to and place this round

By the time 5am landed and I was getting to those last few songs on the playlist like 'Vodka' and other offensive material, things were getting existential - "What am I doing with my life here? I mean, I like Necro, but I wouldn't this for my mother." :pac:

    Thanks for enduring that folks.

Next rounds are much more fun, for Stu anyways.

It's back over to him for the hosting duties next as we move into the 'Forever Young' category (in a slight change of schedule).

I'll let him give the date and time for that reveal though.

Congrats to our table toppers. Now I'm off to the gym to listen to some Bonnie Tyler.

Yep, that round was the stinger for me in our Walrus game. However, my absence this evening was nothing to do with that, I was just out and about and had things to tend to IRL. Reading back, it was a fun reveal, good man Necro, and I would have liked to be present and posting. Well done Kolido, cute-hoorism at its finest with that song selection :D

This is one of the funniest things I've ever read on boards, burst me hole laughing well played Stu :D

Now that round is out of the way and we can burn it with fire and dump the ashes in a volcano, next up is...
'Forever Young': So many artists have been taken from us in their prime or before their time, but not without leaving some treasure for us to sift through for the rest of our own days. Give us a song from one of those artists who means a lot to you.

Note: It can be a member of a band either, and it doesn't have to be the singer/main songwriter. For instance, Led Zeppelin effectively called it a day and were never the same again after the premature death of their drummer John Bonham.
I'm really looking forward to this round, even if it will make for bittersweet listening.

I'm planning on doing the reveal from 8pm on either Wednesday or Thursday. If any of you have a preference for either, just say.

    Funny cause it's true!

Well done in this round MJ, great choice. Speaking of my mother, that was a song she used to sing and have playing around the house when I was young, but I had since forgotten its existence until this round. I didn't even know that it was a Eurovision song.

O ya way more funnier cause its true.

I came across it in my extensive eurovison research where I picked a year 1956 google winner didn't like it. moved up a decade didn't like it landed on this in 1976 and said ya that'll do.

I think I had it in my head it had to be an old song for no reason only my brain thinks its own thing, as I would have picked the rock n roll kids

Stu sitting at his computer at 4am listening to Pop Rocket is quite amusing to be fair.

    'Come to bed Stu'

'NO, I need to listen to Jedward for Necro' :pac:

I knew this song but never really listened to it, I know its not a Damien Dempsey song as well :D

Something I will learn to sing, forget who went with it but cheers. Fantastic meaning to the lyrics a brilliant song

I know that song and I couldn't think from where but I think it was briefly in The Snapper. When they're all out the garden waiting on the son to arrive home from the army or wherever he was...

    https://www.google.com/search?q=craig+curley+the+snapper&client=ms-android-h3g-ie-revc&prmd=inmv&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiu3JbKubHkAhWLSxUIHcyzDyMQ_AUoAXoECBAQAQ&biw=360&bih=599#imgrc=TEPcR2AH_jQPNM

One of the kids puts Save all your kisses on the record player and then Dessie tells them to put this (below) on and the son is arriving home walking towards the house cringing...it's something like that...can't find a clip :)

That's what I'd have submitted if I was playing. I sent it to Necro as an aside. I think it would have done well by his reaction. Though maybe he was only being polite.

Really wanted this to be my entry on the back of the stories in 2009 about how their entry for Armenia had been blocked by the Turkish government but on digging into it, it turned out to be a load of pro-Erdogan hyperbole. Still, would have put Lordi in the shade....

Would be a shame to miss the reveal as I'm nailed on for the win :p

Funnily enough Bonie Tyler was performing at EP this weekend. Sadly I didnt make it over to see her. Good choice for 11st place but I am outraged that an actual song sung in the competition didnt get top spot. Rock and roll kids shouldve got it tbf.

Happy enough with 6th for my entry. That song was the winner for me this year. I agree that it was a good year. There were a number of songs I really enjoyed and I didnt actually mind the Netherlands winning song.

The only two eurovison songs I could remember was Dustin the Turkey and song ridiculously over the top heavy metal song. I remember finding it hilarious. I had no idea what it was called so just googled "heavy metal eurovision", sure enough he first thing to come up was "Lordi - Hard Rock Hallelujah".

Well we all thank you for not submitting Dustin the Turkey PJ :pac:

Am I the only person in the country who doesn't like that song? By doesn't like I mean I absolutely despise it, and have from the first time I heard it. To me it's offensively bland, but I've yet to come across anyone else who doesn't think it's great.

No you are correct - it's ****e. But if everyone had good taste, we'd live in a world full of homeless sommeliers and no one wants that

Funny, I always thought it would be telling people that I can't stand the sound of MeMuircheartaigh's voice that would turn me into a stateless person.
