AVG says I'm being tracked?!

    I got this notification this morning from AVG. I thought it was just another that I ignore. But it was a bit harder to ignore this one! It said that I was being tracked. What seemed different to me this time was that after clicking 'resolve', shortly later AVG was asking for my money.

    When I clicked further it said that online trackers get into my PC when I visit websites, that they record what I'm doing grabbing more than 3,000 pieces of personal info. It also says they create a very detailed personal file and sell it to companies, and that advertisers can now recognise me.

    Is this true? I always just presumed that these anti virus things on my PC are pretending that there are problems so that they can look good!

    Yes, it is true. Can an anti-virus solve this issue? No. You are going to be tracked and your personal info going to be used to target you with personalized ads and search suggestions.

    I hope you do not visiting porn websites, do you? They are the worst for collecting and passing your preferences to whoever asks for it.

    There are ways to avoid being tracked, but they are quite inconvenient.

    Yes I do. But it's not like I'm a celeb or anything so I guess they can't black mail me about my tastes in porn?

    Everyone except very paranoid people is being tracked. It is a relatively benign problem. Ad people want to know what you watch, which places you visit, what are your preferences so that they can show you relevant ads. It can be used for more nefarious purposes if some organisation takes a particular interest in you.

    Do people still use AVG? Get rid.

    Malwarebytes anti malware and windows defender is more than enough

    It is AVG's method of encouraging you to pay for a subscription based AVG product.

    yep just use the built in Windows defender and install Malwarebytes which will run a free scan once a month which is perfect
