New cars depreciate heavily, always did.
I bought 141 BMW 530d msport in June 2018 for 20k euro and missus bought 141 Audi A6 in December 2018 for 20k too.

Both had in around 60k kms on them

List price on a 530d msport brand new is 70k and an Audi A6 2.0 S Line is 60k

So people lose their nuts on new cars, nothing new there, I have 2 x 4 year old cars very fresh for a fraction of the price

But someone needed to buy them new for me to have them and there's plenty of audi and BMW garages still in business so they are selling and I actually depend on them selling in big numbers to pick up my next car for a reduced price

Saw the new 3 series yesterday. The thing dude wise , looks like a noddy car ! 50,000 for the entry level in an m sport for a 3 series ?! Looooollllllllll! What’ll that be worth in 3 years ?! 20,000-25,000?

It's certainly not cheap but have you seen the price of other new cars now, this isn't unique to BMW which you seem to be trying to get at. Have you priced other new cars, a brand new Corolla costs the bones of 30k now. 37k for a small crossover electric Hyundai Kona and that's after the Government grants are deducted. And they will only get more expensive when WLTP starts kicking in from next year.

And shocker, cars depreciate especially in their early years but if people don't buy them new then how are people like yourself going to buy them for a fraction of the price years later.

Same as. I just wish more would order in the exact spec I want though!

The time is getting nearer, will be changing the Golf soon.
Lovely car but want to keep car fresh and looking for something with more room for the 3 kids.

Would it be worthwhile considering an SUV like an Ateca, 3008, Qashqai etc, or are they very similar in the rear to the Golf in terms of width?

Would I need to go to the Passat or Superb class to get what I need?

Do you need rear width for baby seats or boosters?
I can’t imagine suvs you mentioned would be any wider than golf class cars.

Yeah, kids are 6, 8, 10 so there will be some boosters for a few years yet.

They can manage ok in the Golf but it's a very tight squeeze.

I was thinking I'd get more head and leg room with the suv's, but maybe I really need something a little wider too.

3008 has a lot of room actually but I’ve a Superb and 3 kids and it works well too and leaves the driver more room too than a lot of these SUV options

3008 was also on my list of cars to check out, but I just assumed all the smaller suv's would be very similar in terms of interior space.

I know a Superb would do a job for me.

I rented one in Germany with the kids and we were v happy with it. Tuscon, Kuga, Tiguan all feel like they have less space especially in the rear

The 3008, regular Tiguan, etc really aren't much bigger than a Golf inside tbh.

    How about the larger 5008?

I am no fan of MPV's / SUV's but I had a 5008 rental in France a few months ago and I thought it was absolutely excellent. Great interior, really nice to drive, great driving position and tonnes of room.

Would you consider going for a seven seater?
We have three kids a fair bit older now but have had seven seater cars for the last ten years. Gives you much better flexibility as invariably with sports. school etc having the ability to put another kid in can be great. Also would give you the width and lots of boot space when seats not used .
The seven seaters seem to hold their value better too. The 5008 or kodiaq perhaps?

The 5008 has loads of space. We we're torn (well she sent me over to order the 5008 but I came home in the volvo) between that and XC90 but opted for the Volvo in the end there wasn't a lot between a new 5008 and the price of a 2yr old Volvo, 5008 would be a lot more economical to run on short trips. I assume servicing is a lot cheaper as well.
I've a golf and find it a lot more practical than my old 5 series but your kids are 5yrs older than mine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,944 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

    To be honest I don't see myself in a 7 seater, I don't think I need one.

I had a 6 seat FRV and we down sized from that when the kids moved out of car seats and into boosters.

They are simply too big for everyday use, often there are not all 5 in this car.

The Golf works OK for most trips, I am just looking for something slightly roomier. I think a Passat or Superb might be all I need, but I was wondering if an Ateca, Tiguain or 3008 might have done the trick also.

The new VW id3 is meant to be Passat size on the inside. Are you able to buy it through a company or anything as there's 0% bik.

    No, private purchase.

I take it a Golf SV would offer no more width in the rare to the cars I've listed?

The superb has a wide back seat....found it horrible to drive had one as a courtesy car a few months ago. It was the 1.6tdi I think...might be better with a bigger engine the handling was wolly out, it gets good reviews I'm just not seeing the attraction beised the size, suppose it's what you used to.

I agree about the cruise control!

Would you personally buy a Cupra or similar Mark given the price? Or would you buy a premium saloon for similar money? Just asking about your personal preference for 300bhp in something like this or 200bhp in something like a 5 series or a6 or e class type car?

Wondering am I missing out on great driving experiences through my like of big premium saloons, while a nice place to be aren't exactly exciting.

The front disks on that Cupra look the business. Proper 2 piece floating which I think is unusual as I don't think the other VAG stuff has that set up, although could be wrong. Here they are on an M5:

Interesting enough that the discs and calipers l
etc on the Ateca had Audi stamps on quite a lot of the parts!

In relation to something like that over a 5 series or A6, you really can’t beat a quick hatch or in this case crossover when you can push them on but then you get into the badge carry on in your head and you start thinking yeah but I could have a BMW or an Audi on the driveway. They won’t give the same driving experience as something with 300bhp and AWD though. Even with the extra height the Cupra was nailed to the road.

The cost factor is significant though and when you can’t drive it on and you’re crawling on the M50 or whatever, would you rather be looking at the glass haptic screens and the softer plastics that you get in a new A6? It’s a hard one to call.

Having personally had 5 series and 6 though, would I consider a fast Golf or something down the road, I absolutely would.

I’ve a Z4 video waiting to be edited and similarly, it’s all about fun behind the wheel of that but again for the same price, a 330i could be had but it won’t look or drive the same way.

I'm truly shocked to do the figures this morning and discover that a June 2018 Med blue M Sport Plus 530e first of all is only €2202 VRT and can be bought all in from a UK dealer for €34,000 with the VRT. The closest thing to it in an Irish dealer is €11,000 more and with twice the miles. Do I have the figures right?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,609 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Here are my figures based on this example below. There is a 2k cheaper M Sport on autotrader too but it's a base spec and has a bit more mileage so I took a decent spec with average mileage as a better example.

    2018 530e M Sport:
    https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201907230377994?model=5%20SERIES&sort=price-asc&postcode=ln12na&radius=1500&make=BMW&onesearchad=Used&onesearchad=Nearly%20New&onesearchad=New&aggregatedTrim=530e&exclude-writeoff-categories=on&year-to=2018&advertising-location=at_cars&seller-type=trade&year-from=2018&page=1

    Cost £27,500 = €30,500 using xe.com
    VRT = €2,071 using stat code - 44287720

So total excluding travel = €32,571 give or take.

There is an EV/hybrid rebate included in the VRT which is why it is so low.

Now, if only I had 33k to buy it.

For a one year old G30 there’s value there though isn’t there!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,609 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Definitely, there is wider choice too and if sterling gets closer to parity with the euro over the next 2 months or so.

The possibility of Vat / import duty aswell post Brexit means it might be the right time to buy very soon alright.....

I'm looking at 2015/2015 S3 or Golf R. VRT is big enough a pain in the @as but probably be worse post Brexit with additional fees....

We never really had a free customs union for motors. Shame.

It’s quite specific to the 530e and possibly the 520d. I did up a quote on an M2 and there was little in it, in fact a year newer example in Ireland was about 4K dearer but that’s before you negotiate.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,738 ✭✭✭Heres Johnny

There's a few sub 40k 2018 530e msport on done deal so don't think the gap is quite as big as you think. That said you've mentioned an msport plus, which to be honest I don't know what the difference is.

On a side note, the good car people here frequent this thread so I'll ask here.

I've a black 2014 A6 S Line but it has the chrome window surrounds and grille surround. I've seen a good few of the same car with black surrounds (black edition cars) and tinted windows and I just think it looks way better and think I might get it done. It's about 300 euro for the wrap and tint and just wondering do people think it makes sense and if anyone actually prefers the chrome over the black.

Upgraded 20" alloys, factory tint rear windows, upgraded speakers, rear spoiler and m sport brake calipers. Compulsory imo when buying an m sport.
