Stu how the hell do you know so much about Music its insane knowledge at times

Haha, something like the strings in Amie was a hunch, then followed up by some googling out of curiosity. I never knew Damien Rice to be a string arranger, and those strings sound just too perfect...he'd be known as a great orchestral composer as well as a great songwriter if that was his own arrangement.

Anyway...it shouldn't take away from the fact that I think Damien Rice is in the pantheon of great Irish songwriters.

I'm okay with my position. It's a song that has a lot of meaning for me so I always come back to it.

No one said he was carrying you ;)

No, seriously, I think the two judge format is working really well, good idea

    I did!!!

But yeah, I'm enjoying the two judge Walrus, it adds an extra dynamic as one person's sugar may be another person's salt etc.

I was fearing that at least one of you would be sick of it alright :D But I do love it. I love Thin Lizzy but wouldn't have over listened to them myself over the years really so I'm not sick of them. Was thinking of Jailbreak, Cold Sweat or maybe Cowboy song either, not sure if they'd have done better.

I probably should have thought about it a bit more, as I remembered a few tunes that I would probably have entered instead of Lizzy.

Half the problem for me is trying to remember songs with this game, though of course its good when I do and it might not be something I've listened to in years :)

9th: She Scattered Crumbs - Ger Wolfe

    Stu:
Never heard this before. Really like the intro. Very Irish sounding voice, even though the nylon guitar and chord structure is giving me 'Greensleeves' vibes, it's an interesting juxtaposition. This sort of reminds me of Lankum's Granite Gaze, not a bad thing at all. Although I'm trying, I have no idea what the song is about. Not a bad thing again, I do like the mystery. I'm going to be giving this and Ger Wolfe a few more listens, possible discovery of the round for me.

    Necro:
This has a lovely melody in the background. I'm not overly gone on it tbh, but I did find it growing on me after a couple of listens. Comfortably mid-table.

Halfway through tonight's songs. We're going to cancel the half-time bingo and raffle for the hamper, and just plow on.

    Just before we do...

Could the owner of the red Corolla, reg number 98 D 2451, go outside and move it cause it's blocking the Portaloos. Thanks.

Oh, and I'm going to pour a Paulaner.

Thin Lizzy are one of my weird blackspots, I'm sure I'd like them but I really don't think I know much. I'm enjoying this one, must give more a spin :)

8th: To The Bright And Shining Sun - The Walls

    Stu:
You have to hand it to The Walls. They're not Irish heavy-hitters on the international scene, but Steve and Joe are responsible for at least two iconic Irish guitar anthems, plus they are one of our hardest-working bands throughout all of their guises. Between this and Brewing Up A Storm, their mark on Irish music is made. However, this song has been licensed one too many times to corporate interests by now for me to fully enjoy it unspoiled. Yes, licensing is a primary method for artists to make their money these days, but when I hear this song I think of The Last Word on Today FM, or ads for a bank, just places I don't want to be put when I listen to a song. That said, when that chorus kicks in, it lifts me along with it, and all thoughts of variable rate mortgages or Matt Coopers voice leave my head. Brewing Up A Storm is more a favorite of my own though and could have ranked in my Top 5 here.

    Necro:

I'm actually glad someone submitted this song as it's one I have on loop from time to time. It's one my kids like because in the chorus I mime running to the bright and shining sun biggrin.png Ok, ok it's not funny per se but to a 5 year old and a toddler it's hilarious and Daddy is king funnyman for another little while. So thanks for allowing me to entertain my kids again with my Dad jokes tongue.png

Great to see Ger Wolfe get in the top ten. This song holds a special place in my heart, I think it's about old age - though I could be misinterpreting it. This is my favourite of his but Curra Road is another great track and The Velvet Earth a really good album.

    I'll move me car now.

It's still growing on me here and I will be listening to it again, it is a lovely tune.

Btw guys I'm not trying to be pedantic or preachy about who wrote a song or anything, it's just that I'm going for Irish songwriters in this round. Yeah it's not great for the people who submitted and got low points, but I'm still very happy to have been introduced to Saints and Angels and The Button Pusher.

Yep and yep. Jailbreak I've played a lot, Cold Sweat I wish I could play :D

It's a really unique song for an Irish band imo especially at the time. They're a great band, and have a lot of different sounding songs.

It's a good job I'm supremely confident of my other categories or I'd be getting worried at two 10th place finishes :pac:

7th: Winesong - The Mary Janes

    Stu:
Singer reminds me of Mic Christopher, which isn't a bad thing at all in my book. Wait, is it Mic Christopher? *googles* I did not know Mic Christopher=The Mary Janes. Before I knew that fact, I was possibly going to look into more of their material. Now, I definitely am. I like that lo-fi recording sound, it puts me in mind of other underrated Irish bands like Lir who were writing great songs and playing great gigs in a bustling scene despite the world's attention not being on them.

    Necro:
First impressions were 'oh this is a bit drab and moany' - but then it kicks right up moving into the chorus and I found myself nodding along. One issue with it was I haven't a balls notion what your man is saying, something about never changing and whatnot. But it doesn't really matter, it crescendos perfectly and is just about the right length before the inaudibility gets a bit too much biggrin.png I like it!

Love this, it's why I sign up for judging/playing Walrus, to discover gems like this.

Also, not the first time the judges were in agreement tonight.

I was going to go for this one instead:

But it makes me seriously emotional. It was played at my friends funeral.

Only posting it because nobody entered Christy Moore.

I have another one that I'll post at the end of the night (I don't want to duplicate a song!)

Glad ye liked the song. Its one of those real pick me up songs for me. The opening guitar rift is just so amazing. They had a great hit a couple of years earlier too, Bone Deep

But Bright and Shining Sun will always be one of my absolute favourites! :D

Back in the old days when you had to get to a pc to ask Jeeves what the lyrics were it was too much effort. I was singing this for about a decade before I found out I only got 3 of the words right. (One of which was Wine and doesn't count). Glad yiz liked it.

    6th: Troy - Sinead O'Connor

    Stu:
That voice, just 'yeah'. I'm actually not overly familiar with Troy, but feel like I've known it for years. Maybe that's because it reminds me heavily of a Kate Bush song called Cloudbusting that I love, but it isn't a rip-off of it IMO. I'm getting a 'screw my parents' vibe from this song, and if so, it's done in such a sophisticated, mature setting compared to many other similarly themed songs. This is such a grower of a tune for me, and I'm really getting into it. Just looking at the details, Sinead would have been 20/21 when this was written and recorded, that's just astounding to me. I love that the drums don't come in until after the 4 minute mark, like a gift I didn't think was coming or that I needed. While Sinead's talent is undeniable, her songs can be hit and miss with me. This song is very much in the former category.

    Necro:
So this might be a kind of musical sacrilege but I can't stand Sinead O'Connor. Yes, she has a great voice, and yes her music is really popular - but it's always baffled me as to why. I suspect my co-judge even will be disgusted but I just don't 'get'her. Plus I find her an insufferable arse along the lines of Bono. That being said this is one of her better songs imo, there's at least some attitude to her voice here as opposed to that horrendous rendition of Nothing Compares that everyone fawns over. This is about as high as I can let it rise in comparison to the others though. Sowwy to the person submitting it - it's genuinely not you, it's me :(

I'm with Necro on this one. And I love Cloudbustung and anything (particularly the entire Kick inside album) by Kate Bush but I just don't get Sinead O Connor.

He has an entire album (Family Album) which tells a story from beginning to end. He also wrote The Room (Mary Coughlan sang that...I think) or was it Dolorous Keane? Anyway The Voyage is one of the tracks on that album.

I mean I can absolutely see why she's popular but I can just never get there with her stuff.

    5th: With Or Without You - U2

    Stu:
Probably the song which first brought me to U2, a band I was a big fan of for much of the 90s, peaking with their two Slane concerts in 2001. Not too long after that, I hit my 20s, life got darker or a bit more complex, so did my tastes. I'll always have a love for U2's earlier music though, will never deny that, and the Joshua Tree is one of my favorite albums from anyone. I'm not gonna shíte on about it too much or try to break it down, it's With or Without You, you either love it or you don't. The song sold thousands of E-bows and the album millions of delay pedals, this song and the album its from were a gamechanger.

    Necro:
So I kind of mentioned before about Bono... we all know he's an insufferable arsehole. It doesn't take away from this being one of my favourite songs though tbh. Suffers a bit from the duplicate entry and being a tad overplayed but is always going to score well with me. It's a choon at the end of the day. WOAH OH OH OH!
