I have not used my 2 weeks summer holidays yet, I can save them and add them to my 2 weeks off for Christmas.

Am half tempted to feck off to Fuerteventura for Christmas, and she who must be obeyed also likes the idea. It's starting to look like a runner.

Yeah loads of people feel a bit depressed on NYE whereas I love it - new beginnings and stuff.

I'm just such a super positive annoying ****er about these things!!!!

And then the festive season ends, the reality of January, work, winter, credit card bills, winter utility bills kick in, and I'm back to being a miserable bastard. Balance: restored.

There it is. I hate NYE. I always feel a mild melancholy at the end of the year, the last thing I want to do is celebrate another year over or beginning. I just feel extra aware of the passage of time and what that means in terms of life, loss and all that other serious stuff. Even Auld Lang Syne is about a sad farewell.

whatever you do. do not go to live in Scotland! I was on a north sea island for years. They all but omit Christmas but HOGMANAY! You could not even call 999 for hours as they were all on the phone after midnight.... the air stank of whiskey for days.

    Ireland was grand after that..

That is such a lovely idea! Hope it works out well for you all.

My mam is always saying she'd love for us all to just save our gift money and Christmas food money and use it to spend Christmas in a hotel in some nice snowy country. We'll hopefully get around to it some year soon!

    Do it!!

Such tradition around being at home, but, holidays are fantastic, and why not combine the magic of Christmas without all of the shopping and buying and cooking and, etc, with a holiday!

Different stokes for different folks, but take your mammy off somewhere snowy. God knows our mammys have done enough for us!

Everyone has different ideas about Christmas, and I suppose a lot of views depend on whether you have kids, a close family, have to travel long distances to see folk and so on.

We hope to go to Malaga City from 20/12 to mid Jan. (lovely spot) and did it a few years ago. Great shopping, wonderful atmosphere, but not in your face if you get me, and they know how to enjoy themselves!

Weather is not always perfect, but it's far better than mid Winter in Ireland. Can go by train/coach to Granada, Cordoba, Seville etc. also to break it up. I highly recommend it.

That kind of thing won't suit everyone, I know that.

OP you are not being selfish. Life is too short to be miserable.

I love xmas but it does start too early. Never been into new years.

I don't do much though - no visiting or being sociable. Eat steak and chips for xmas dinner. It's great

Just get your shopping done by the end of October/start of November and you’ll start to enjoy Christmas more.

Jesus, I remember last August a guy asked was it too early to light the fire and he got some shtick!

    Now, we have Xmas threads.

People put too much pressure on themselves to make each event brilliant. Just enjoy the few days off work and chill out.

No harm dropping subtle hints about that gift you really want now though.

I’d wear mine regardless of whether my shopping is done or not.

I'm sure this has been done before, but..... I hate Christmas. There is endless pressure to juggle so may things and facilitate so many other people.

There was a couple of times where I managed to end up alone on xmas day and I absolutely loved it

Not particularly looking for judgement about what a selfish person I am(though feel free) but more interested to hear others' opinions. Is this common?

I don't like it either but I'm marrying someone who really digs it, would put the tree up December 1st if I didn't put my foot down

I haven't read the rest of the thread only your OP. Order yourself a takeaway on christmas eve. If you drink, get the beer in. If you have a sweet tooth, get the goodies of choice in.

Sprawl out on the bed/couch and think of yourself and your needs. Not the drivel that society expects you to partake in. You are not selfish. Once you've no kids, it's whatever you want it to be. Kids complicate it.

No one should apologise for what they like or what they
Don’t like. I love Christmas and I completely understand people who don’t like it. I’m happy to understand it’s all different strokes for different folks.

I think most people work a lot these days anyways so that kinda ruins it a bit.
If only people could stay away from the shops for a few days!
