Recommned varnish/laquer for wood sign

My daughter has painted a name sign for our house on a piece of drift wood. I'd like to coat it with a good quality varnish or laquer so we can put it out on the gate post.

It will obviously be exposed to all sorts of Donegal weather.

I need to varnish to be very clear and not to discolour so that the painting is not obscured

    Any recommendations?

Yacht? Only, do it down the shed. Then run away for a good few days!

I used some earlier. The bang's appalling!

I've never seen anything that won't peel off after a few years by way of varnish. Not even yacht varnish. And that's in more clement places than Donegal.

If the wood is rough/split then the damp will get in an push the varnish off from the inside even more quickly.

If the piece which was painted was flat I'd say put a piece of glass over the area but if uneven then no ideas except perhaps decking oil. It will need maintenance by way of reapplication (say once a year) but at least it won't flake off. Dunno bout the paint though.

I made a number plaque for the front of my house a few years ago and gave it about 5 coats of this https://www.lenehans.ie/400-ml-clr-crystal-gloss.html

    Still looks good today!
