The story that Quint tells certainly is true. And the inspiration for the book is very loosely based on a series of shark attacks New Jersey 1916

its also true they needed a bigger boat

    Is jurassic park a horror

Nope. Going by my husband test it's not.

Serious answer: Jaws is a horror for me - it's trying to scare you. Jurassic park doesn't have that as its primary objective, its just heightened dramatic tension.

You cant say any film with a bit of a thrill is a horror (in my opinion).

28 days jaws is not a horror movie

Cabin in the woods as it's a really cool take on the horror genre

What's your definition of a horror movie?

Vale puts the debate to bed

    No he's not. It's a horror comedy.

    Aliens is a horror action.

    Genres can mix!

They can, but I still disagree that Sean of the dead ever intended to scare me. If it never intended to scare, shock or startle me, how is it a horror?

Izombie has zombies but it's far from a horror.

Dawn of the Dead leads 5-4.

Giving it another while, but would you like another two movies to debate while we wait for a deciding/tying vote(s)?

Horrors don't have to have supernatural elements.

Lots of horrors are just based on "possible" events.

You're right that horror /= thriller.

But there is a lot of cases where there is crossover.

Ditto, plenty of horror films aren't that scary. It doesn't mean they're not horrors.

It is subjective and there's no definitive answer though. But debate is fun.

Precisely, Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer for example, a gritty, grimey and very real look into the mind of a murderer.

Easy peasy! Psycho is a knock-out classic!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,220 ✭✭✭Jurgen The German

Psycho, it's one of the genre daddy's and arguably the first slasher movie (though there isn't any actual on screen slashing). I never cared for EH and still dont know why its held in such high regard by so many.

Event Horizon: Great mystery, Good tension, horrific hell scene, evil ship.

Psycho: great theme tune, Good plot, great ending.

    Event Horizon for me.

All eyes on Kursk. Slava Ukraini.

Not gonna lie. I put Jaws forward. I Googled horror films and it was amongst the first 20 or so that Google listed. I was surprised it fell under that genre.

I think there'll not just be arguments about what movies win, but what actually constitutes a horror movie :)

    Will definitely be entering.

What horror films aren't scary?! That's the whole point of them!

I'm off to recheck a definition now cos if they're not trying to scare you, I don't agree they're horror.

And I do like debate. :)

    Zombieland wasn't scary (to me).

    Psycho ,
For forever giving me an intense dislike of shower curtains...

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,442 ✭✭✭Choc Chip

    Psycho!

For a film without a lot of gore, its terrifying.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,474 ✭✭✭✭TheValeyard

Still think the TV series, The Haunting of Hill House, is far better than most of these films :D

From my spreadsheet, other horrors, I didn't find particularly scary:

    The Craft
    Fright Night (both of them)
    From Dusk till Dawn
    Grabbers
    10 Cloverfield Lane
    Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil
    The Wicker Man
