Media bias in sport

The media in Ireland are very bias depending on which sport you play. Rugby players are giving a very tough time and get away with very little such as Sean obrian and paddy jackson but football/soccer players get a free ride in the media such as Ismahil Akinade. I was wondering why this is so? shouldn't every sports star be treated equally?

Rugby players are media darlings and it's disgusting tbh.

How the hell can anyone not crucify Paddy Jackson, slate Sean O' Brien etc. They have a larger prominence nationally than Ismahil Akinade; hence larger coverage.

There is huge media bias towards rugby. Way out of proportion to the amount of people who play or watch it. Its been a huge bandwagon the past few years.

This always annoys me. Journalists are trained to be neutral, I understand bias in local press but it's unforgivable in the national papers.

But paddy jackson lost his job ismahil akinade was given offers from most irish football clubs. football players never get bad coverage in the media look at how zebo and murray were treated after they recorded a woman they gangbanged surly that should not be made public??why did Liam Lawrence ot get the same coverage after his gangbang in sunderland ?

Well I just had to Google Ismahil Akinade.

The Irish rugby lot get away with all sorts of shenanigans when on tours. The Irish media turn a blind eye and it does not get reported- trust me on that.

Now, I agree with this. If lads are being lads on tour and nobody is getting hurt so bit.

You see, in England this would be all over the papers. For example, the English players bitched about this during the 2011 WC when Tindell was tossing 'small people' around. They were out grumbling that the Irish players were up to far worse beforehand but nobody said a word.

rainybillwill please remove/edit your post - you've identified the wrong Irish footballer. He has since passed away and I'm sure his family don't want his name incorrectly linked to something like this.

Irish international rugby players in this country can walk on water and for what reason I don't know. They are the most overhyped and overrated sports stars we have. Considering the amount of actual decent rugby nations there are, the Irish rugby team have never got past the quarter final stage at a World Cup, which is something that even Scotland, Wales, Argentina etc. have managed to do. Rant over.

Don't know what the OP is talking about, rugby players in this country are media darlings.

I was saying that the Rugby lads are media darlings, so they get away with a ridic amount (so many Lions Tour stories etc gone untold)

I dont buy this. the stories would have came out if anything had happened look at what happened to sean obrian over him being a little bit tipsy after a long hard season

Rugby players get away with their “messing” about because they aren’t big names compared to international or premier league footballers.

Any “major” transgression would get media coverage but urinating on some punter in a pub or having a rather “salacious” threesome involving unmarried men and a young girl being watched by some “creep” in the corner of the room wont sell too many papers.

Still look how paddy jackson was hounded even though he was found not guilty and how footballer Ismahil Akinade was treated even though he was found guilty. Denis Coulson also lost his job playing rugby after an alleged gang rape this would never happen if he played football. It seems the media are out to get irish rugby players who are heros for the irish people and the only team capable of winning anything

I don't see how rugby players "get away" with anything. SOB was in the papers.
All sports, be it professional or top level amateur have lads that think they're untouchable.
Even women's GAA, yer wan Thompson was offered a redemption article by a paper and she broke the jaws of two women.

Regarding general coverage that's an incredibly soft approach to rugby under Joe Schmidt, yes there's been some great moments but the media are afraid that they won't get the all access coverage so they drink the cool aid.

The GAA lads get away with murder to, throw a duster at a kid, no worries.

It's not just sport. There's media bias against or for whatever is currently trending, or whatever will get them the views. Always has been, always will be. I nearly prefer WWN or ITN, still get the news(ish) but at least in a funny fashion!

They don't always stay neutral: needing to make a living and satisfy an editor take priority.

Regarding the topic: Chet Evans didn't get an easy ride and he was ultimately found not guilty too.

Ultimately: if you're accused of sexual crime, you're going to get villified by the press regardless of what sport you say. Or whether you're guilty or not. You're a celebrity of sorts, and that's the price you pay.

No point in reporting on the misdeeds of LOI footballers, when you'd have to start by explaining who they are.

Just drank a little too much blew off some steam after a long hard season maybe peed in public but you would swear he murdered someone. Rugby guys get a raw deal when it comes to the media. Footballers are treated as gods such as Brady in the Euros scoring a goal against Italy's B team who had already qualified from the group

The publicness of his peeing wasn't the issue! It was the fact that it was against the leg of a third party who was innocently standing at the bar.
