"I'm a people person and I want to help others"?

Do you get suspicious when I hear this? It's like as if to say "I'm not really good at anything so I'll just take credit for encouraging to do what they're already doing". I guess it's relatively harmless unless they begin to think they're holier than thou.

I met up with an old friend of mine from college recently. I think I got a whiff of this "helping" notice from him. He studied science but he ended up working in recruitment. Anyway when we met, the conversation was about 80/20 towards him. He just couldn't seem to shut up. But what annoyed me wasn't so much the fact that he wouldn't shut up but more so that he'd frequently repeat himself. I don't know if it's the recruitment job rubbing off on him or what, but during the entire conversation he said that he had empathy for his clients four times, and he said that he was conscientious about his work four times. You'd have to wonder is this is due to him feeling that he's not getting through to me, or is it that he is afraid of silence, or what.

I remember looking at his eyes as he spoke and what was interesting was that every now and then when I could see that he was running out of things to say, he would still manage to keep talking without any pause! That's was most rude of all about this sort of personality. It's like as if to say "now that I'm finished I may as well just keep talking as I presume whatever you say wouldn't be very interesting".

At one point I'd to go to the bathroom and I remember saying to myself I'll just wait for him to come to a pause. He was taking a while. Eventually I remember looking at him thinking to myself "no fcuking way! you're not serious". Eventually there was a brief silence, but not because he'd stopped... he was searching his head for the right word. That was my chance - I interrupted him and said "which way is the bathroom?". He just answered "oh yeah yeah, just that way".

A bit later on he was talking about a client who was really good in every way, except her answers were a bit too long and detailed. It was so ironic because as he was saying this he was telling me all about various tasks he does on his job in too much detail. I called him out on it as best I could in a short and polite way. And just to be sure, used to phrase "I don't mean to be an a**hole". He was a bit better after that, and at the end of the night he said "oh sorry about all that, it's just that's the direction I'm enthusiastic about in my life at the moment". That night he said that he was a people person about three times. I felt like telling him that there's a difference between being an extroverted loud-mouth and being a people person. He thinks he's a people person, yet he wouldn't have the slightest clue that he was boring the hole off me.

For some reason any time someone keeps repeating themselves like this, it screams to me that they are completely vacuous and don't have the ability to think critically. For all his talk about improving as a person and how capable he lets on that he is, I would not be surprised if no one ever gave him the feedback I gave him that night... about such an obvious habit! Anyway, I don't know what he studied science for! He seems right at home in that sort of recruitment/HR bullsh1t style of job.
