Time to upgrade the sons machine now,But im not so sure there is any meaningful upgrade he can get thats not gonna cost a fortune.
    His current machine is
    i7-6700k
    32gb ddr4 2400
    asus strix 1080
    2x1tb ssd and 1 nvme 1tb drive

He is looking at a ryzen 7 3700x and a b450 or a cheap x570 board which also means having to buy faster ram (3200)

I am just not convinced it would be a meaningful upgrade or should i convince him just to upgrade the asus strix 1080?
    he games at 1440p 165hz
    thanks for the advice

For gaming the 6700K is sufficient unless he can actually pinpoint a CPU bottleneck.
RAM on Skylake is fine too - it doesn't need fast RAM iirc, just low CAS latency.

    Definitely upgrade the GPU - I'm finding it hard to hit 1440p 144Hz with a GTX 1080 + 5820K @ 4.37GHz and would consider RX 5700 XT or RTX 2070 Super / 2080.

Agree. 6700k still a great cpu. Get a 2070 super, or wait for a 2080 super.

Must be some kind of unconfirmed price; AmazonUK have 2 models listed at €800 & €846 (Gigabyte).

Nvidia UK store lists the FE at only £669 (€745).

Cheapest 2080 I see on OCUK is 599. So cheapest 2080 Super should be same. The 2070 Super did follow that pattern to be fair. Guess we'll see.

I don't think it would make much sense to upgrade unless you have an unlimited budget. Going from 1080 to a 2070 Super would probably only be a 20-30% increase in FPS, same goes with the 6700k to 3700x upgrade. Sure you could get a 2080 Super, which would be a good upgrade (but need to wait for reliable benchmarks) but an expensive one.

It makes sense to go for a GPU upgrade, a CPU upgrade alone won't give much. 2070S is a good solid upgrade. 2080S a major one.

There really isn't a meaningful upgrade for this. Especially not for gaming. Maybe get some good cooling and try spending some time overclocking the processor?

    GPU Bench 1080 vs 2080: https://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/2527?vs=2514
It's about a 10-30fps increase across the board. Some games become more playable at ultra 4k. But some very minor settings tweaks could do the same thing. So personally, I wouldn't recommend that massive cost.

Maybe focus his attention on peripherals like a new mouse/keyboard/headset/mousemat/etc.

    Look at OP's monitor - 1440p 165Hz
An extra 20-30fps is HUGE here.
