British flags up all over Portrush and surrounding areas, in front of houses etc so they'll be plenty of crusties there hoping he doesn't win it, Hopefully he wins in a land slide just to stick it to them.

Yeah it would be a Unionist town though the Mayor of the area this year of all years is actually Sinn Fein!

If you are an actual golf fan you'll applaud and cheer the best shots. You'll also want the guy who shot 63 and is four ahead to win it. Him, being from the same part of the world geographically gives fans something else to cheer for. But you'll also want plenty of excitement and if someone pips him at the death that too is great.

That's for the 12th and is always like that. nothing to do with The Open.

I know sport and politics dont mix and all that. But there is a fascinating aspect to this one. A few people people said to me yesterday (more GAA background). Hopefully he wins it and sticks irish flag up. He should probably stay clear of that.

This week for me was Northern Ireland being in the real world for a week.

Its a fantastic positive for them. A place that refuses to govern itself.

hopefully this sort of stuff doesn't come into it.

Of course it shouldn’t come into it but the tricolour in that part of Northern Ireland is seen very negatively.

Anyway I just hope to god he wins! Everything crossed!!

Trying hard not to switch the coverage on too early. Butterflies already. But what a round yesterday. It will go down as one of the best rounds in a major ever. He hit one dodgy chip on the front nine and a bad drive on 14 but nearly flawless for the rest. 17 greens in regulation and these greens aren’t huge and all have run offs. It’s not like he holed miles of putts either - I think the longest must have been about 12’(?). He also missed a couple of 6/7 footers on the front nine. Jack Nicklaus tweeted last night that JB Holmes went out tied for the lead in the third round of a major, shot 69 and finished up trailing by 6. It was phenomenal and such a pleasure to watch. It will be such a challenge today but his play yesterday should give him great belief. C’mon Shane!!

Keep your ill informed stupid comments to yourself. Do you know anyone from Portrush or the majority of them? If not then your comments are ignorant so please go and talk to the locals before spouting unfounded rubbish. People from Portrush have welcomed everyone from around the world yet you want to make unsubstantiated claims that are not helpful.

He didn't get a great reception from all of the crowd. Some of the locals were absolutely sick. Plenty of comments being made in the crowd.

Shane did say "spa" though after that idiot shouting.

Are you being serious? I was in the crowd on Friday and Shane got almost as loud a roar as Rory did. I followed him and didn’t hear one nasty comment; in fact I heard shouts of encouragement from everyone and most had Northern Ireland accents.

Were you there and what did the “locals” actually say?

Well I was up there and saw the flags so back into your box.

Well I was up there and saw the flags so back into your box.

As has been explained it has nothing to do with the Open. Like many areas in the north that celebrate the 12th will have Unions Jacks up.

I’ve played the north a good few times which is generally played week of the 12th and Portrush town has been nothing but welcoming.

Well I was up there and saw the flags so back into your box.

Just because they have flags up does not explicitly mean that they were unwelcoming as a rule.

Rory himself said how everyone who would have been cheering for him were going to support Shane.

Yes you saw flags......bully for you. Then you jump to childish conclusions about what people think. I assume that you spent no time with the locals to find out how welcoming they are and the support they have given to every Irish player.

Your opinion is not based on any evidence other than you saw flags and then jumped to conclusions.

Educate yourself before making silly unhelpful comments.

So tell me......did you get any direct abuse from the locals?

When did the BBC lose all live coverage? I thought they used to have some on the last 2 day (unless that was just the Masters). I know it's on the Open website anyway, which is a bit surprising as Sky have the coverage.

Can you back this up? If not, jog on. I’ve heard nothing but support for him over the 3 days.

    Jog on? Grow up.

I've heard plenty of ****s ****es and groans, and one of those groaning turn to me and say "your boy is doing well". She was from Portstewart, and not once did she or the group she was with even clap for Lowry. On course it's all supporters following him, at the screen beside the shop that's what I experienced.

Sky took over about 3 years ago. BBC actually pulled out a year early from their coverage due to the high costs of production.

Seems like my previous post has been deleted not sure why, as advice to anybody up there with an Irish accent be careful of the local thugs used as security, not the welcome one would expect from a large sporting organization

This. Also, I haven’t seen any flags up in portrush itself, and I’ve been there all week. There are loads up in the surrounding areas but it seems like they’ve tried to keep them off the streets in Portrush.
As for people saying he’s not getting the support of all the crowd, nonsense. There were also loads of tricolours in the crowd yesterday and I didn’t hear a single negative comment about them either.

See link for accu weather. It looks like it will not be as desperate as anticipated yesterday. Periods of light rain with winds circa 10-15mph, gusts of max 22mph.

IMO Lowry is probably the best wind player out there. I really hope he wins it.

Shane is dead right to turn up on later side . if true.

too long hanging around in the pre atmosphere is not doing anyone any good.

Lads, The only flag that matters is the 18th hole.

Anyway, First time watching a whole tournament since I've been off work this past few days. But I have a question, By the greens, there is a hole or two and earlier a ball was beside it and the commentators said he will get to place it.

What are the holes? Sprinklers? or Microphones? or wha?
