VW hesitating in 1st and 2nd gear

Hi All,

I’ve a 07 vw Jetta 1.9tdi. Lately I noticed at low speeds and revs in 1st and 2nd gear it hesitates when under 2000 revs. No issue in higher gears or revs.

I disconnected the MAF and no issues when I did that. I then pulled out the MAF and cleaned it with electrical cleaner and after putting it back in and reconnecting I still had the original issue. Should I just buy a new MAF or anything else I should try before that?

Just to be sure, also check the hoses around the engine.

With engine running you can give them a squeeze (be very careful not to get caught by moving parts!), or even better spray some water on the hoses.

In both cases, if there a difference in idling speed then there is a tear in the hose - that can cause hesitation on acceleration.

I had a sticking EGR valve on my BMW had a similar symptom. Might be worth getting a cheap code reader to see what the issue is. I was able to diagnose my error through 2 different error codes. One that it was stuck open and another time that it was stuck closed.

Cheers I checked the hoses and found one leaky one coming from the EGR valve. Took it out and replaced it and is as good as new again.
Amazing the annoyance such a small crack in a hose can cause
