With the coming launch of Soul Calibur 2, I thought it would be interesting to know peoples opinions as to what is the best fight game or seres of games on any console.

There is a mix of classic 2D affairs and some never 3D based titles. Forgive me if I missed any!

Sf2 CE is the best simply because you can beat anyone with anyone no other game allows that kind of level playing field.
The series was ruined with the Alpha crap it had its good points with combos but Ken and Ryu are near unstoppable and thats not good.

I find Tekken DOA and Virtua to be the same where there are good fighters and bad and the bad ones are completley ineffective vs the good ones. They all have a Paul.

Mortal Kombat games were good ,new one is very good but takes time to get into it.

Killer Instinct wasnt bad either cept Gold version on N64 which was cack.

Kof would be 2nd but stupid fighters that have moves no other fighter can counter was its only flaw although a big big flaw.

Most fighters these days dont have much depth and if they do theres always a Paul or somfin who is unstoppable and has moves that cant be countered and usually repeating them them over and over wins you the fight and then game.

    //me likes fighters a lot :)

    In this order

    1. Killer Instinct
    2. Virtua fighter 2 (arcade)
    3. King of Fighters 98
    4. Samurai Showdown 2

    5. Capcom vs SNK

Hmmm, hard choice between Soul Caliber and SF.

I went Soul Caliber because it had my favourite fighter ever in it (Lizardman), me and a friend had some superb fights with me as Lizardman vs him as Cervantes'.

Street Fighter is a close second, it was simple to play but hard to master, very fun game to play with a mate or two.

Virtua Fighter deserves a mention, one of the first fighting games to have a really huge moves collection for each charecter, hard to get into but great fun once you get into it.

Tekken in forth, it wasnt a touch on Virtua Fighter, but still a great game, and ultimately it had King in it, a very, VERY fun charecter once you learned all his throw combo's (i could do every throw comboo he had in Tekken Tag).

DOA is fifth, while it was fun to look at, and had very physical women in it *cough* the game itself had little depth or origionality on it, it was sold on the women and bought by the men. The games themselves were, IMO, very poo.

Never really played King of Fighters, so I can really put it into my list anywhere :)

    Favourite Fighting games, in no particular order;
    Capcom vs. SNK
Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves
    The King of Fighters '98
    The King of Fighters: Evolution
The Last Blade 2: Heart of the Samurai
Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes
    Project Justice: Rival Schools 2
    Samurai Shodown II
    Street Fighter II Turbo
    Street Fighter Alpha III
    Soul Calibur
    Soul Calibur II
SNK vs. Capcom: Match of the Millenium (best handheld fighter ever)
    Tech Romancer

Good untraditional fighting games are Power Stone 2 and Super Smash Bros. Melee.

My vote goes for the Street fighter series.

Its a pity the KOF series never really took off over here or that SNK never had the guts to release any of their titles on PAL format, they really are a great series of games, with the possible exception of '99-'01, the whole striker concept was a bit lame IMO. Ah well I always have my Dreamcast boot disc....

Street fighter Alpha is easily the best game of the SF series next to the legendary Street Fighter 2 Turbo. Excellent animations in the backgrounds and characters and also that solid gameplay from previous versions is retained. And World Tour mode! Definatly the best additional mode in any SF game so far. The many long hours I spent getting Guile in World Tour mode were some of the best I've ever spent on a console.

Soul Calibur and Tekken are great craic but don't rival the old 2D's in terms of longevity and sheer frenzied turbo combo madness.

I really think Soul Calibur is the best overall. SF2 was genius and it really is a tight finish, but Soul Calibur on the DC was deadly.

I'd have to go for Street Fighter 2 Turbo Edition [on the Mega Drive :D ]

Also loved Street Fighter vs The X Men .... I used to love playing that game on my break from work!! At the start, used to pay a fortune in the 3/4 hour I had .... then after a bit of practice, 50p to complete the game!!

SF2:CE is the best fighting game ever and will probably never be beaten. It just so well balanced. Every character is as good as the rest and it will take years to master.

Samurai Shodown should be in your poll. Another great series of games but just not as good as SF2.

The virtua fighter series is the realistic fighting game.
Soul caliber series is great for people who don't like serious fighters.

Don't like the Tekken series at all. There maybe loads of characters but only 5 are anyway decent and some characters have ridiculous combos that will kill instantly kill the other character.

    super smash bros for me...

Has to be Soul Calibur for me. Only fighting i've ever really enjoyed to be honest. And I keep coming back to it as well. Though, the original had the better weapons system, it just wasn't as good, graphically or in terms of fights.

The characters are nicely balanced as well. With Sophitia prolly being the most unbalanced of the lot, and even she's possible to beat with every character.

Though it did take me 17 fights in a row to beat Megasheep (who was using Sophitia) using Xianghu (however you spell her name) ww)

Cervantes is the dogs bollox in my opinion.

Cervantes is pretty cool alright, but i've always like Mitsurugi, Ivy and Kilik.

For pure laugh value, no other fighter ever beats Voldo. I've never laughed so hard at a game as when I first saw him. Even Monkey Island hasn't elicited this much side splitting pain.

Voldo is just a bit to kinky for my liking.... I really wish I could get hold of a Dreamcast for a reasonable price with this game, I really wanna play it! Role on the sequal for the Xbox.

    Me hoists the Tekken flag.
Loved Street Fighter and all, but it's too predictable most of the time... stay away and throw hadookens then dragon punch if they jump at you, or just keep jumping in with kicks followed by sweeps and another fireball timed for when they get up.
It's still my favorite fast-paced beat-em-up, but I find Tekken a little more tactical given the third dimension of movement, reversals, more moves etc.
Thought mortal kombat was pants - only worth playing for the poxy-hard-to-do finishing moves.
Maybe if they speeded up Tekken a bit and added some blood/dismemberment effects it'd have more fans.

Any other fighter can counter that Wuss attack no matter how good the player with ken or Ryu is ,they can be beaten by anyone everyone has a counter for the fireball and dragon punch.

Could list them but that be too nerdy and zealot loike :)

Well IMO it all too often comes down to switching between one style or the other... just look at the CPU controlled Sagat... just stands there the whole time using fireballs then picks you out of the air with tiger uppercut if you even think about jumping at him.
You just end up having to engage in the always annoying 'I-can-do-fireballs-faster-than-you' match.
Some characters seem to be designed to play like that - ie. that is their strength.
I think Dhalsim vs Dhalsim matches are the only way forward :)

tekken 3 for me simply because back in "the day" i was bloody unstoppable.

Blanka was the perfect counter against ol' Dhalsim. All those sneaky Dhalsim users would shuffle away with quite the shocked look on their face after being beaten by their own abuse of the stretchy punch attack. Muhahahahaha :D
