They are in boxes. Humans also touch stuff in supermarkets.

Whats the roadside price per kg versus supermarket?

I’ve many a time seen a Pallas Foods van pull up next to a stall on the road coming into Adare in Limerick & hand over 4/5 cases of Strawberries to man with a sign ‘Wexford Strawberries’ for sake infront of his stall. They ain’t Wexford Strawberries coming out of the back of a Pallas foods can that I can assure you.

Pallas is an area of north Wexford not far from Gorey!

What's the deal with all this selling at the side of the road out of vans?
Is it some kind of racket? Why don't they sell them to the supermarkets?
Its cheaper for us its making more of a margin for them!

This thread is very clear on that. It’s cheaper or 5 times as expensive, depending.

Other countries have roadside stalls with heaps of veg, here it's just strawberries and maybe spuds and that's it. Driving all the way from Wexford as far as tipp or cork with wexford strawberries seems odd to me.

    and clare

Still wouldn’t buy stuff at the side of the road though.

Its like spuds sold on side of the road.

Much fresher than supermarkets and a good way to avoid the taxman!!

No vat on fresh food, and the kids hardly earn enough money to go over the earnings threshold.

No license required to trade either, can only operate May to Sept, strictly restricted to growers themselves and strictly limited perishable fruit and veg too.

Hardly the easiest way to earn money, but you'd regularly see a couple of dozen boxes in the morning and hardly any left in the evening at some of the popular stops.

I buy them regularly. Normally 2 sealed boxes for a fiver. They taste much better than the supermarket ones and tend to be bigger too.

    Very nice.

    They’re not cheap.
Some sell them for more than the shops charge.
quality is never cheap . The're very good this year

Yeah, that always puzzled me too. Wexford produce for sale on the side of the road in Galway, Limerick, Tipp, Clare, etc., as farm shop produce. And what about the safety of young kids in horse boxes on their own in the middle of nowhere!

I live on the border of Wexford.

Fun fact: The majority of strawberry plants that grow Wexford strawberries are in fact imported at the start of the season so Wexford strawberries mostly start their lives in the Netherlands and the likes.

It's as Irish as a soft day and yet here some are on AH questioning this tradition. It's not EU rules about health and safety we need to worry about its boards.ie and the need to query every****ingthing.

Here in County Waterford the Wexford strawberries are hugely popular. Most people I know buy them from the roadside vans, and yes, they are delicious. One of our favourite times of year is when the strawberries and Ballinacourty new spuds go on sale. We're a simple folk, but we love our grub. :pac:

strawberries taste better if you dont refrigerate them, dont leave them in the fridge or at least let them warm to room temp before you do.

    same with tomatoes

I've never understood why Waterford doesn't "go big" with Strawberry's - the climate is virtually the same in the east of the county. The yield per plant where they are grown outside is huge for about 6 weeks.

    And why wouldn't they be?

Because I work for Pallas Foods.

I agree,Harry, it's a shame. For the first time this year we grew our own strawberries and spuds, and they taste divine. I might yet put Waterford on the map...strawberry wise. :pac:

Pallas Foods are based in Newcastle West, Co Limerick.

And their biggest warehouse, which would put Apple's data centre to shame, is in Dublin 15.

The strawberries you often get in supermarkets are watery and have little taste.

The nicest strawberries I have had generally tend to be the ones you buy at the side of the road down in Wexford. Delicious! And I always wash then before eating them.

This thread has reminded me to get down the N11 soon to buy some punnets of strawberries.:)

Wouldn’t touch them. There’s a guy sells them near us. Spends the whole day there so I’d wonder where he goes to “use the facilities” and where does he wash his hands

    I can't stand this rubbish.

Firstly, it's possible to pee without touching the pee.

Secondly, this fear of germs etc is ridiculous. The world is full of them and they are everywhere.

Go to restaurants and chefs will plate your food with their hands, and it does no harm.

Yet people think a strawberry touched by someone will kill them or a crappy chicken fillet roll must be prepared by somebody wearing gloves.
It's actually not healthy to avoid all these germs that people are so afraid of.

For what it's worth , Wexford Strawberries sold by the road are nice and the farmers make more money from the direct sale.
