That doesn't auger well for you in that case. You won by 3 points in a game where you got a fortuitous goal and a penalty was missed. If Galway were poor and you scraped by them then you were slightly better than poor. Hardly a ringing endorsement to reach a semi final.

Mayor's game management was poor no doubt about that. But as we've seen before with Mayo whether they're scraping by in matches or winning well, it matters little as long as they win. Mayo give pretty much every team a chance to come back into a game regardless of how they are playing, it's a serious weakness, but one that won't be fixed any time soon. Anyway Mayo were going to beat Galway sooner or later , the same way Galway will beat us again soon. No one keeps the upper hand for long .

Jasus your still not out, the brothers in tuam.

1055 I left the god forsaken car park
    Just home now
Has taken the shine off the night
    A little ;)

Any visitors ? Or all they all hibernating again
    Waiting for us to lose
Seem to enjoy that more than going to watch their own team play by the looks of the turnout this evening

COC was disgraceful again today looks like he has not changed after his lay off. Mayo Joe was shocking a very poor ref

Thought he was excellent to be honest - can name so called 'disgraceful players' on every team. Everyone thinks they have the prettiest wife at home.

That’s fair enough and I understand your comment, but at least you confirm that he works the referees and winds opposing players up. It’s a shame for me because he is so talented. It goes against what I believe sport is all about. I understand that it is win at all costs and by any means necessary to some.

GAA refs are useless, players like him are never going to be protected enough. I'd say he engineers a free or two alright but all the best forwards do. Michael Meehan was a good player but he was also an expert in pulling backs down and making it look like he was the one fouled. Most of the top forwards would do that though, it's just part of the game unfortunately. The solution would be a clearer definition of the tackle but no sign of that happening.

TBH Yop I thought a number of the Mayo lads were lucky today too.
I though the foul for the penno was a red card, I thought AOS had a deliberate leg trip that he dressed up as something else and COC was lucky not to get another yellow, the ref bottled it imo.

However overall I do agree with you, we were watching it on TV and it came up more than once about all the frees Galway contested that were moved forward. I don't think mayo did that once in the first half.
Galway lost it a bit at the end. At the start of the second half Mayo lads dished out a lot of cynical fouls, but then Galway took over.

There were so many inconsistencies in the game today.

All the top teams do this, Mayo did it better today. That's my version of a complement BTW.

On the plus side I think that best thing from today from a Mayo perspective is that COC is back and it makes a huge difference on the scoreboard.

So much went on off the ball. The ref on his own is on a no win
Every Mayo kick out the Galway players dragged us down.
Comer deliberately have tripped but stayed on.
I haven't watched it on TV so can't comment on what was too far away. I'm sure we dished it out but we have learnt from years if it against Dublin and I'd be never apologize for it tbh.

COC looked v tired. The bench is strong and getting stronger with the new lads impressing.
Kerry game will tell a lot.

Think GAA really need to get two refs on the pitch, impossible for refs to keep track of time, scores, cards and all that goes on. Umpires and linesmen are woeful bad.
Both teams today feel the ref was for the other team, cards, frees etc missed. Gaa need to help themselves.

Yeah, exactly and that's what makes it a great rivalry.

When I saw Galway's starting 15 today, I really worried for them. For all the talk of Mayos injuries, Galway were down some key players. McDaid has never played midfield at this level and it was a massive ask for him. Cooke (who did well in first half) would never have started midfield if we had any other fit midfielders. My thinking at start of game was that we would not be able to cope at all with O'Se. Brannigan hasn't played well all year either so wasn't filled with confidence seeing him in there.

An interesting reaction from Mayo players to run off the pitch immediately before getting swamped by fans. Not criticising them doing it as they've a big game next weekend, just thought it was interesting that they all did it and gave me impression they may have been instructed to do so.

Definitely wouldn't blame them for that. I know it's mostly young kids doing this at Mayo games but we could do with a bit more separation between players and supporters straight after games. I'm sure there's plenty of time for autographs and photos if people want to hang around for half an hour after the match, without charging onto the field the second the game is over.

TBF taking off my blinkered green and red glasses there was cynicism on both sides and I'd agree with the majority of your post. But I would have to disagree with you re the red card call on the penalty, yellow card absolutely but a red card harsh.

I am mindful of my need to watch back the contest.Donie's rather rash slide tackle.Crazy stuff.

Overall very happy with the performance, most especially the first half.Much more at a performance level that has long been a distant memory. It was a very decent contest IMO with both teams enjoying periods in the ascendancy.Galway with a new manager in situ have an awful lot of talented footballers and some frightening prospects like James McLaughlin and Tomo Culhane. Our own Ethan Henry is quite a prospect.

Power's error was a key moment from Boyle's fluffed attempt(he should never be permitted to kick a ball :) ),Carr took both goals with a degree of aplomb.Peter Cooke was imperious for Galway when many others struggled.

Cillian is like marmite, largely loved in his own county in spite of his flaws but outside of one missed free he was excellent today, making such a difference to keeping the scoreboard ticking over. His link play with our now main threat from play Darren Coen was a joy to behold.I can understand his lack of popularity outside our borders.

I thought our footpassing was very good today and our intensity in all aspects was top notch..tackling etc.I found it a tad strange a flourishing Kevin Mc was taken off so early? Was Paddy struggling with cramp at the death or was that a tight hamstring?

Eoin O Donoghue got albeit a brief cameo.

Fergal Boland was in the match squad after all.

A missed penalty,I thought it bizarre that a Shane Walsh...did not take the penalty.Good save from David Clarke. He'd a good game although his kickouts cost us a couple of scores.

Aidan O Shea did a trojan amount of work defensively.

TBH I can't for the life of me see how Lee Keegan was fit for noimead amhain of action given how he was injured last Saturday night.A simple twisted ankle?

3 more games anyway, not sure where it's going to take us but I'm sure going to enjoy the journey.

From the TV you could see quite clearly Horan calling them all off when the match finished.

Silke has a good reputation for penalties with Corofin so it wasn't a surprise to see him take it.

TBF in most previous qualifier games..Down and Armagh the players stayed on the pitch and as always were great with all comers, children included.

But it's a tad played out, they've gone through a match of crazy levels of intensity and need to recuperate with a short recovery period until Killarney.

Those same fans get ample opportunties to mix and mingle with their heroes.

Great to see Tom Parsons still involved in the setup in some capacity.

Gone to the Radisson for recovery session and food. Late night, long journey, game next week and lads back at work Monday.
    Non-issue.

Not blaming them at all. Just found it interesting how they rushed off the field. Personally, I like the supporters and players mingling like they do at the end. I'd hate to see a 'separation' brought into it. But I completely understand why Horan wanted them off the pitch quickly tonight.

It has a capacity of 43k but only 9k seated according to their wiki page.
That'll be the season ticket holders I'd imagine.
    Is the rest just terrace?

You expect the Kerry lads to turn out in big numbers for this game. Mayo should bring 15k so should be close to a sell out.

Be interesting to see how Mayo go in a league format. They always play there best football in true knockout games without a safety net.

Great win and heart shown. Top performances all over the field.
Coen again was top class up front.
    Aos, boyler, Higgins etc etc.
Great goal for Carr after that run.
Strange game with the soft goal at the end putting a nicer slant on it for Galway. But the run of wins over us is well buried now.
Shocking display of ill discipline shown by them, could have seen a few more blacks or reds but our lads held their heads.

    Onwards to Kerry now.

100% on Coen. He really stopped the galway fight back when they were starting to get on top with a great point in the second half. I think it has taken him this length of time to mature into a real top player. He has a great little burst of pace to make space once he gets the ball into his hands, always looking for a clever pass or else pop it over. He really is a very impressive player.

One worry for me is that we should have won by alot more and we seemed to
find it tough going in the second half until Coen's point after the penalty

That would be a great lift for the team. We need a win next week to get the super 8 campaign off to a strong start. Diarmuid and Ruane would add to the mix with their experience.

Right here goes.............I'm increasingly optimistic IF we can just get over the super 8s............next weekend is huge . Win that and ............

    Ydays game
Clarke - nobody around me felt he wouldn't save the penalty. That's the confidence he exudes to the whole team. That can't be quantified. That's why playing hennekky at any point over him is insane imo.

Full back line - much better . Prob not Barrett's best day at the office but still did ok. Higgins much better despite his propensity to give me heart attacks by "marking " 10 years in front. Teams have identified it too. Harrison excellent.

Half back line - Paddy much improved . Boyler outstanding but must never ever shoot again :D Donie- did what Donie does - hugely important player

Half forward line- Kevin Mc where he must be played . Brilliant . I wonder if he is fully fit though
    Doc- excellent second half
Fionn - quieter than usual but he is also strong and a great option from kickouts

    Full forward line
Not much to say. Outstanding. Options we have needed in AI finals are now there and free up Cillian even more too. I hope they get a chance to show it ..........

Horan - set the team up perfectly . Hopefully Kevin Mc is left where he is now . Use of subs still questionable . Not sure what Regan offers except for crazy shots at important times

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,286 ✭✭✭seligehgit

That's great news re Matthew and Diarmuid if true,it does appear Kevin Mc is not a 100%.Can't see any other reason why he'd be pulled ashore.

Zippy,Paddy and Fionn with the their pace are David Clarke's 3 main go to options for the short ones.

Very disappointing shot selection from Evan Regan at the death.

How on earth did Donie not get a penalty?
Clear charge on him from their full back
They went up and got 2 scores and the pen straight after as well

    God bless Clarke

He caught him on the shoulder. Although if vaughan was a bit smaller, or maybe a bit cuter, he could have manufactured a penalty there.

I think people are harsh on coc. It is a local rivalry, and kerin was giving him loads of it. I think he learned from past experiences and gave kerin exactly what he was looking for.

Re the game itself. No hurricane wind and lashing rain in this fixture for the first time in a long time and the galway gameplan fell flat.
People are giving out about the ref but galway have gotten away with some seriously overly physical stuff in this fixture in the past so i think that was coming.
