Leap Card Kids Go Free - 1 July to 28 July

    This year Transport for Ireland will again be running their annual summer Kids go Free promotion for children in possession of a Child TFI Leap Card starting in July.

    This year additional operators have been added to the offering of free travel for children and the free period will be doubled from 2018 by being increased from two weeks to four weeks.

    Simply use a Child TFI Leap Card as normal and you won’t be charged. Any Child TFI Leap Card (4-15 or 16-18) can be used to get free travel from Monday 1st July until Sunday 28th July (inclusive) provided it has at least 1 cent of Travel Credit.

    The services included in the offer this year are:
    - All Regular Dublin Bus Services (excluding Airlink and Nitelink)
    - All Bus Eireann City services in Cork, Limerick, Galway and Waterford
    - All Bus Eireann Town services in Athlone and Sligo.
    - All Bus Eireann Dublin Commuter services where LEAP is installed (not Expressway)
    - All Go-Ahead Ireland Services
    - All LUAS Tram Services
    - All DART Services
    - All Dublin Commuter Rail Services in the short hop zone
    - All Services on the Cork to Cobh/Middleton Rail Line
    - All Scheduled Ashbourne Connect Services (excludes tours)
    - TFI Route 139 between Naas and Blanchardstown

    Don't have a TFI TFI Leap Card? Get one for free!
    To celebrate this years Kids Go Free initiative, a limited number of Free Child TFI Leap Cards can be picked up for 5-15 year olds at the following locations across the country.

    - Dublin Bus Head Office, 59 O’Connell Street Upper, Dublin 1
    - Connolly Station, Dublin
    - Heuston Station, Dublin
    - Pearse Station, Dublin
    - Ceannt Station, Galway
    - Cork Bus Station - Parnell Place
    - Galway Bus Station - Eyre Square
    - Limerick Bus Station - Parnell Street.
    - Waterford Bus Station - The Quay

    It's also now been confirmed that Local Link will be offering free child travel throughout the month of July with no Child Leap Card required for free travel on these services.

    It's the worst thing they could do is hand them out free. Free travel with the card OK but to hand them out to gangs of teens who just use it to cause nuisance on buses and trains us madness.

    most teens would already have Leap cards.

    To be fair in previous years you could order one to be sent out in the post FOC now they have to be collected in the DB Office, Connolly or Hueston. Also the card must be topped up by €5 or more to be activated.

    Tried at the dublin bus office in O'Connell St about 2 weeks ago but they had no free ones left. So there probably weren't that many of them. I didn't mind as only had 2 for the 3 kids and have been putting 2 on one card since the youngest turned of age, I had planned on getting one anyway. Looking forward to getting use out of them this month.

    Students are usually supplied with a card when they arrive - have you ever seen them topping up at a machine?

    One of the objectives of this is to make sure that children have their Leap Card before the start of the school year.

    It would probably make more sense if the free month was August if that's the case as the children could lose the Leap card before they go back to school. My suggestion to get more children onto Leap cards would be to do away cash child fares meaning they'd have to pay adult fares if paying cash.

    Adult fares already apply from age 16.

    Anyhow, the idea about doing it in July, is to get them into it at the start of the summer and use it for the remainder, then its normalised by the time they get to school.

    Indeed they extended child travel to 19th birthday now, which is entirely appropriate, because these days people are f----g children well into their 30s :rolleyes: never mind 18

    Its becuase more people are finishing out secondary school. I was 18 doing my leaving and 19 getting my results 16 years ago. I dont think that's too uncommon now.

    In theory this is a good idea. In practise, as a daily dart commuter, its a disaster.

    Specially on good days such as today.

    Work colleague of mine travelling home early ish yesterday heading Malahide direction. gang of 13/14 year olds get on the dart and cause mayhem. Kicking the train doors, jumping on seats, when challenged by an adult replied 'so what are you going to do about it? ' They know they are untouchable by law.

    They got off in Clongriffen for some reason, went onto the tracks and started throwing the stones which are on the lines, onto the platforms, narrowly missing a man waiting on the platform.

    How about Irish rail give commuters like me a free week, to thank us for our all year round custom? Instead of enabling gangs of marauding feral teens to annoy the s**t out of those of us going to and from work every day and paying for these scumbags to exist .

    Not to mention the wonderful impression this gives tourists travelling to Howth etc during the summer.

    It's not Irish Rail giving them free travel it's the NTA funding this. They are travelling free courtesy of the NTA who are paying Irish Rail the same amount to travel FOC as if they were paying.

    This behaviour is very much common place on public transport. These thugs do not own a leap card and regularly evade fares so don't really see any link between the NTA admirably providing young people the opportunity to travel free and thugs being thugs.

    Unfortunately this has been an ongoing issue for ages, and we keep asking for a TransitPolice and keep getting a reply of a few token garda presences that go away after a few weeks then everything goes back to normal.


    It only happens north of connolly too.
