DVD Ripper & Burner (for family video)

Hi all, I have a DVD of a family event from a few years back. We got a guy to put it onto DVD but he is no longer in business. I just bought a DVD drive for my laptop and I'm wondering what free (if possible) software is available to download the DVD and burn it onto a new DVD fairly simply? Thanks
