Hypothetically question. What if there was a security alert in the air over Ireland.

When I read the article about the bomb scare on the Air India flight over the U.K. and the RAF taking to the sky it got me thinking about Ireland.

If something similar happened over Ireland with say an Irish airline, would we have to call in a favour with the U.K. and have them escort the jet?

It wouldn’t be a favour, there’s a formal agreement in place between the UK and Ireland to cover it. From the Brits perspective it gives them the right to intercept baddies - eg Russian bombers or hijacked TATLS - before they reach UK airspace and get within striking distance of their major centres. For us it covers our lack of capability.
